It is 3am and jet lag has hit. We returned from oz yesterday after going there for daughters wedding and it has been the best month ever. I am not gloating but just proud of my family for helping me personally realise how wonderful family can be.
This was the first time the five of us had been together for years as daughter in oz, one son with own family and another travelling son meant we haven't been together for ages. Of course that's how it should be, they are aged 26 to 29 but with different lives and all very used to not being with us, they all made such a tremendous effort, all coming together on diff flights to join our beautiful daughter for her oz riverside wedding in the sun. Thrown together in her little first house, then to beach setting for a week, then on to small island house on another beach for a week.
We are a close family and they get on well but thrown together in tight spaces can be tricky and I have to constantly remember not to mother them but boy was I proud of them, laughing and joking, chatting and catching up. I was able to fund their trips as I didn't want their lack of money to stop this reunion and they didn't take this lightly but I said that they had paid me back a hundred times by being three decent honest thoughtful and caring people with active and interesting lives .
Ok I am gushing but please let me as I really can't see us all together again. Of course this is normal and we are all in this position but for many reasons it could have been a disaster as the cancer hospital weren't keen my husband travelled due to break in treatment and he came out separate to me to that was weird and my son nearly couldn't leave his disabled baby as he has a serious episode the week before.
Anyway we all made it and in my mind it doesn't matter if this doesn't happen again as the other son emigrates to Canada ne

More sunshine posts. I love seeing all my children together at celebrations. Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy. Lovely memory to carry you through the coming years. Hope your husbands treatment is successful.

Sorry took a while to find....

Take your time when life is too fast and loud and enjoy peace whenever possible,

Suffer fools the best you can and appreciate the like minded, they will convince you that you are not alone,

Say it as it is but always consider others opinions, keep your mouth in check but your mind open

You will have to put up with idiots from time to time and they will grate on you but they have their place so let them be, otherwise they will annoy and get u dear your skin.

Your life will be full of achievers and doubters, choose who you befriend wisely, praise and support them as necessary, the younger generation will appreciate your support if given kindly.

Stick to your ideas and see where they lead. Some will succeed and some will fail. Appreciate both for all the right reasons but never give up what you truly believe, it could make a real difference.

Work is your lifeblood, it is vital and necessary and fills a huge part of your day but it should never be a chore and must make you happy. Follow your heart and give it your best. Don't waste life hating it. Move on.

Be aware of loudmouths, you don't need their smart ideas but if they are truly clever, be patient, pick out the best bits and learn from them. Spot the differences as soon as you can.

Treasure your family and friends, they have known you the longest and deepest, you will need them often so look after them, show them you love them and mean it.

Love is brilliant so give and receive willingly, it is as necessary as the air you breathe, but save it for those who really deserve it, don't give it away lightly but don't stifle your passions either.

Getting older is shit but accept it with a smile, different stuff happens with advancing years and more relationships are made so be prepared for anything and don't believe it will never happen to you. Everyone has a crisis in life, embrace it, learn about it and deal with it. Keep walking even when your hips are screaming but don't run from it as you probably can't for long anyway. Drink wine as necessary.

If ever you are alone it will be tough, so fill your day with good things. It is worth the effort and will ultimately give you peace of mind. Pick yourself up however hard and be proud of small achievements. Several small strides add up to big steps.

Be happy with life, you are what you make of yourself and always worthy of being here, whoever you are.never underestimate your place in this world. It is an incredibly beautiful place and we all have a role to play, be it big or small.

It is hard to know why and impossible to guess the outcome, but life is good and sadly brief, so be true to yourself and those closest to you, they will appreciate your honesty. Be proud of who you are.

The worlds issues may cast big shadows over you but take a minute to see the view from the hill and it's not so bad, beauty is right there if you take the time to look.go for a long walk, you will feel stronger and soon gain perspective.

Smile every day and make others smile with you and be bloody grateful for what you have. It may not be what you planned when you were young but plans are tricky. Shit happens so shovel it up and use it as compost for your next idea.

If you do nothing else but face the world with a positive attitude you have done your best. Well done. Enjoy with all your heart. Be cheerful, strive to be happy.

Menopaws, I have both cried and smiled almost both at the same time reading your post. How very lucky are your children to have you as their mum. You sound an amazing uplifting person, and I am so so happy for you to have had that wonderful time away with those that mean the most to you. Thanks for sharing. Its one of the most uplifting posts I have read on social forums.

So lovely to hear of your amazing family 'reunion'. Nothing better than having all your nearest and dearest under the same roof and all singing from the same hymn sheet! Gush away.....
We did it in the opposite direction last Christmas with the Oz family travelling to the UK. Being all together for 3 weeks was amazing and I was over the moon to have all of my family together for the first time since the last 2 gc's were born 4 years ago. I was expecting the odd firework but everything worked out beautifully, the SiLs all got on well, as did the daughters and the 8 cousins had a great time discovering each other. Luckily the house was big enough to accommodate all 15..... shock
Hang onto your memories Menopaws

aqua if you can have a stopover in Singapore that might be a good idea and sometimes a short stop is included or at a very good offer price. I notice that not everyone wears flight socks but we do on a long flight - you can get thinner ones for women rather than the thick black ones.
If you don't stop overnight then Singapore airport is probably the very best airport in the world for transit. We have had transits of over 7 hours but there is plenty to do in the airport, lots of gardens, orchid gardens, a butterfly house, lounges, a swimming pool etc. If you are several hours in transit they even offer free bus tours of the city!

Take some clean undies and a clean top in your hand luggage, yoy could have a shower or just a good wash and be refreshed for the second leg of the journey.

The non-stop flights will be to Perth I think.

I have had a Singapore Sling in Raffles but never stayed there, although we had a walk round. DH opted for tea hmm

Yorkshiregel Mon 13-Mar-17 09:18:39

Might be interested to know that there will soon be a direct flight to Oz which only takes 16 hours not 27! Maybe this might not be the only time you get together. Fingers crossed! Thankfully my son now lives in UK so only 2 hours away now not 27. He lived in Perth AU for six years. Just got his PhD so now Doctor... So proud of him and his family.

Years ago we broke our journey back to the UK in Singapore and I believe we were also flying with Singapore airlines - a wonderful airline, by the way. We had a deal where we stayed in the old Raffles Hotel before they updated it. It was wonderful: sets of rooms with big sweeping ceiling fans, lovely verandas to eat your breakfast kedgeree (that was included we couldn't afford to eat any other meals there). To cap it all, they were filming the very last episode of Tenko there at the time.

Good morning happy lady! We all need more people like you in our lives, your family & friends are so lucky to have you. Re: Oz trip, thanks so much for all that advice. Were hoping to secure it today, Singapore air like you & strangely enough overnight at Crowne Plaza on return trip with 3 nights on way out to break the journey & sight see. Cant wait now!!! Have a lovely day & thanks again xx

Menopaws Mon 13-Mar-17 06:09:31

Aquafish if you can stop off in Singapore for a night then do it, it is such a long flight but it makes such a difference, I stayed at crown plaza in the airport and if you book early flights you should get a good price so the hotel isn't too bad then, puts you in the right time zone so u are not a zombie on arrival. No shot cut for a good flight although I like a window for better sleeping position and the ideal is next to exit then you have room to get out for the inevitable wees without disturbing everyone then you can drink as much as you like and stay hydrated. If you can take a tablet to help sleep through as it passes the time, take an iPad if you have one as free wifi on flight (Singapore airlines that is) for books, music etc but really no shortcut except to enjoy the reason you are going, that will give you your own wings x

I have just woken after 12 hour sleep and got to go to work but thought I'd pop into gn first, after your comments ladies I feel all tingly and smiley and ready for anything so thank you all. Yes I am a half full type of person but the best piece of advice I got from a friend was to jot down all areas of life with a tick box next to it and put a cross in any areas that aren't good. Only one box got a cross and you can guess which one but many many people have more crosses in their boxes and that is never forgotten but finding the positive, however small, is my key. I have too as I could lose my mind otherwise but holidays like I had and comments you have given me raise me up to a point where anything is possible so a million thanks again and I will post my version of Desiderata later today for a bit of fun! I'd forgotten I had done it until I saw it on my daughters wall in oz and she reads that rather than the old fashioned language of the original!

Dee Sun 12-Mar-17 19:43:02

I want to support what Vickymeldrew said, there are clearly some serious issues going on for your family but you have chosen to look at all your blessings, clearly a very glass half full person. This is a gift but we can all work at being more grateful for what we have, thank you for reminding us of this menopaws and good luck to all your family in whatever they face in the future.

albertina Sun 12-Mar-17 18:48:13

So happy for you and your family. You really cheered my Sunday and gave me hope that my two, who do love each other but row a lot, may one day come together and get on like sisters ideally should.
