Cooking up nostalgia.

I've never eaten bread and dripping the though makes me gag. H says I show the butter to the bread I don't want to taste it.
I do like semolina and all milk puds, also treacle sponge, spotted dick etc.

Bread and milk was what we got when we were poorly as kids--buttered bread with no crusts, liberally sprinkled with demerara sugar, cut in little cubes then boiling milk poured over it. It was really comforting, almost made being ill worthwhile.

Azie, as a nod to bread and dripping, I occasionally do a Jamie Oliver trick of standing a chicken for roasting on top of slices of bread. It comes out cruchy and golden on the bottom and soaked with the juices - yum!

Milk puddings at school were revolting, but my Mum's rice pud made with creamy 'sterilized' milk was delicious, especially the skin. I want some now!!

Moving away from sweet things, I sometimes yearn for bread and dripping. A big slice of fresh, white bread spread thickly with beef dripping which was kept in a metal pot in the larder. No fridge! If you dug to the bottom of the pot, you'd find thick, rich jelly. A sprinkling of salt was the final touch! Probably be banned now!

I like semolina too with a splodge of jam, not had it for years, now I will have to buy some tomorrow! I have a vague recollection of something my Mum called POBS which was bread broken into warm milk. I suspect it was a warm breakfast when nothing else was available. Didn't like that much, does anyone else remember it?

french toast has to be fried in the same fat as bacon for breakfast here ,never with sugar

Mmmmm.....eggy bread. Yum yum I had that as a child too. No icing sugar though thanks Chewbacca!

Hollygog pudding she said, wistfully. I can't make it any more as DH isn't allowed pastry, but the yearning is still there. On Thursday, I made jewel box pasta which I used to make when my children were little. My DD loved it, it was one of her favourite meals.

French toast, or eggy bread as we used to call it, is a particular favourite of my GD. Just so delicious with a sprinkling g of icing sugar. mmmmm!

I make steamed puddings regularly, Spotted Dick, Jam Roly-Poly, rice pudding OH loves them all. Do not like Semolina its the texture I think.

Semolina?? NO it brings back memories of ghastly school dinners. Semolina and Tapioca (aka frogs eggs) should be banned. Horrible horrible to be reminded of them!

Lovely steamed puddings, corned beef hash, and rice pudding made with evaporated milk. Nostalgic indeed.

When DH and I first got together we would often have a bowl of semolina before bed in his freeeeezing cold bedroom!! Haven't had it for years. Such a lot of the food we used tohave I couldn't eat now - mince and potatoes, pork strips etc etc too fatty but the lovely steamed puddings I do miss.

I adore junket and clotted cream!!

My contribution is "top and bottomer" A meat and potato pie in a pie dish - haven't had one for years always a family favourite when I was a child.

We also used to have "butter pasties" which contained no meat (rationing) but all the other ingredients and extra butter.

Today I saw some old fashioned steam puddings on the supermarket shelf
When No Snack February is over, I think I will have to succumb to making some homemade steam Pud with lashings of custard!

I love semolina but my DH has nightmares about junket. Do you remember Brown & Polson(i think) who done flavoured custard ? i adored that
