I was very under weight as a child and was given large spoonfuls of cod liver oil and malt. The dog absolutely adored it and had to have a spoonful too, She did get a bit fat but it had no effect on me.
You can still get Zambuc from some health shops.

My Grandmothers cure alls were; Beechams powders, Liquafruta (for coughs) and Bread &milk poultice, slapped on whilst boiling hot!!

Remember all of these products, our house must have been like a mini pharmacy. Californian syrup of figs, can still see the bottle, every Friday night even though I can never recall having constipation.
When I worked at a children's hospital I carried a bottle of kaolin and morphine in my pocket, it was a saviour as we had ever present dysentry.
My mother swore by vitapointe and I can visualise her dressing table with her beauty products, Ponds cold and vanishing cream and the fragrant oil of ulay.

Was anyone else given Virol to build them up supposedly? I also dreaded being ill as the the dreaded Fennings Fever Mixture would be administered.

When I was in hospital after having my first child ( 1965) I asked DH to bring me in a bottle of lemon squash. He brought PLJ. The nurses didn't half laugh.

We had Scott's emulsion and my DF, who rarely drank alcohol, consumed quite a lot of Gee's Linctus, which DM said was alcoholic.

When I had my babies (40 years ago) I put a slosh of savlon liquid in the bath following the births. I bought it for DDiL when her babies were born and she was pleased to have it. Our newest DGD was born last weekend (we are very happy) but I haven't been able to find any for her DM. Is it still available?

As a child I was dosed with Virol and a walnut flavoured tonic. M&B emulsion was for lowering a temperature. My mother's alcohol addiction started with Sanatogen wine. I loved the orange juice from the clinic. When my chilblains flared up my father applied Snowfire ointment in a green block - I was terrified, as I thought it was going to burn me!
The only shampoo we ever used was Vaseline in powder form in individual paper sachets, and Friday night was hair wash and Amami wave set night. I still have a tube of Vitapoint, it adds gloss.

I worked for a Wholesale Pharmaceutical Company in the 70s, some of the items mentioned brought back memories as we stocked them.

PLJ - never worked for me; Beechams powders were always in the cupboard. Gripe water, oh happy memories, I loved it, no wonder now I've discovered it had alcohol in it

Nice trip down memory lane on a Friday afternoon I remember most of the things mentioned even if I was never given them.

My grandfather lived with us and when he had a bad chest used something called Friars Balsam. I can't remember if he swallowed it or inhaled it though. We too had the weekly dose of Syrup of Figs and cod liver oil every morning. I used to love the smell of the lamp burning in the bedroom when we had a cold. Probably wouldn't have candles in a child's bedroom these days.

I have bought Vitapoint recently from Sainsbury's. It is on the very bottom shelf and not easily seen. The carton is white and is easily overlooked.

We had 'Scots Emulsion' every winter.

Loved orange juice you got from baby clinic . I was told to give my "hungry " baby nurse Harvey in his night bottle . I remember most of the things didn't have most of them though .

I remember Megazones? for a sore throat and Eucryl toothpaste which was a powder.

You can still get Eucryl toothpaste, but I'm not sure if it is in powder form. It tastes like antiseptic!

ps I could be thinking of Euthomyl (perhaps that's the paste version).

I used to add Andrews Liver Salts every day to my orange squash to made it fizzy! Eventually my mum asked the GP if this would cause a problem, but he said no!

I still use Eucryl tooth powder Jalima . The only place I can get it is the pound shop these days.

Friars Balsam was a liquid that you poured into a bowl of boiling water; put your head over the steaming bowl with a towel over your head. By heck it cleared the sinuses!

Who remembers Energen Rolls? My Mum used to buy them in the hope that they would enable her to lose weight. They were very light and so tasteless that one had to ladle on the jam or marmalade, so that the low calories were negated by the carbs in the preserves.

I remember them now! My Mum used to buy them too, ladling on the butter as well.

My dad used to have a tin of opas tablets on his bedside table ( for indigestion I think) I was a Saturday girl in boots for years and apparently he was the only person who ever bought them
He was also a fan of Indian balm, foul smelling stuff in a little round tin which he claimed could cure absolutely anything!

I remember my sister subsisting on diet of Energetic Rolls and PLJ for weeks ! Never lost an ounce!

I don't remember Opus Tablets storynanny were they anything like Zubes? I used to love Zubes!
