Job titles that have disappeared

Junior Secretary, doing the jobs delegated by the proper Secretary. Back in the 60s, we had an office all to ourselves outside the big boss's office.

Shorthand typist

The Betterware Man. I know the company still exist but it's 'choose from a magazine' now.

My Dad was a door to door Betterware Man when I was little. I still remember him coming home with his case. He had some funny stories to tell. .

A typing facility can you believe!

Paperboy, delivered newspapers, usually Sunday's. At one time I employed eight boys, in a large housing scheme, before there were any shops. When the first general store opened, they tried the council, then the police, to get me shut down. As no one was buying papers from them. They were unsuccessful. It was quite a lucrative part time job.

Knockeruppers, I'm 83 and I vaguely remember them in Glasgow. They could rap the ground floor windows and had the pole for the first storey, I don't know how they managed the second and third storeys.

Messengers are still here, sought after post for retired police officers and the like.

Corsetiere - a lady used to come to our house to measure my Mum for her corsets and bras!

Goodness Jackie. Sounds like you should have been running the company... Secretaries do still exist.

I had a holiday job in the Co-op office sorting the divi. slips . It was excruciatingly boring. Then another holiday job helping the "Home Sister" in the local hospital---is there such a post now?

I was called variously PA, Secretary, Typist, Executive Administrator etc. One boss would stand behind me telling me what he wished to express and couldn't understand how his letters were impeccably typed,and better worded than he could do himself - he thought I was a genius!

The tallyman

Laundry man. He used to come to the house to collect the laundry which my mum would have ready for him all wrapped up in brown paper and string. The laundry man threw the parcel on to his open wagon and led the horse on to the next house. It was returned in the same way a few days later. Mum only sent sheets and table cloths to be laundered, for the rest she had an Acme manually operated washing machine with a lid and a handle and a mangle on the top. Not such happy days!

Clerk

Is anyone a clerk these days or are they administrative officers?

I was a comptometer operator, and trained at Aldwych House, Aldwych, London.
I still have my notebook with notes at the front and test results at the back, and the averages of my results. Somwhere I have a Comptometer pin badge. Sad, moi? but I did enjoy my course with two friends from school. After training, I went to work for a shipping insurance company, until I left in 1963, and yes I still old my pencil in the way we were taught.
