Alone at new year

Am I the only one on my own for new year's eve? I am truly on my own, just me alone in the house. I will see no one now until Monday.
Most of the time I don't mind, but for some reason finding it harder on new year's eve as all you hear are people going out/ meeting up.

I have moved around the country a lot, so seem to have lost many friends over the years, despite the promises of keeping in touch. I honestly have no friends where I now live. Family all live too far away. Youngest child who does live with me is in Scotland with his dad.
I do work and get on with people there. But I am the only single person [ divorced ] there, so they are all with their families.

Just a bit of a self indulged moan. I wish there was just someone to give me a hug. It is many years since I have had that.

Bless you, Wobblybits, how lucky Mrs P is! smile

merlotgran Sat 31-Dec-16 17:21:34

Well, I'm NOT putting my laptop away. The telly's rubbish! grin

Nelliemoser Sat 31-Dec-16 17:23:36

My very small DGS's and parents have just gone home. I am totally exhausted after rushing around for the last few weeks. OH is not very sociable at all and I just want to collapse into bed as early as I can.

I really don't like all the fuss around new year particularly with the current mess he world seems to be in.
(((Hugs))) To anyone who feels in need of them. Me included.

I am marking today by contacting four people who I have not been in touch with since my daughter died early last year. I may be alone but one of them has already sent a lovely answer.

I have been depressed, but right now I want to make this next year better than the last two.

Christinefrance Sat 31-Dec-16 17:48:46

Sorry you feel so lonely Cassie, although it seems everyone is having having a wonderful time with family and friends it's not the case for many people. Judging by some of the posts on here it's a time when differences become apparent. Maybe in the New Year you could look at helping vulnerable people or animals in a rescue centre, it's a good way of meeting people and helping others at the same time.
I was on on my own for several years but rather that than being with people you don't like.
Good luck in 2017 flowers

Here is an enormous hug for all my GN friends (even the Guys)
Pompa xxxx
Happy New Year ..... remember today is the first day of the rest of your life.

alieoxon what a good idea to contact old friends today, i hope you get replies. This year must have been so painful for you and i I send love and wish you a better 2017.

There will be a quiet night here, up early tomorrow for a visit to our poorly friend. Don't mind as we have never really celebrated NYE. Suspect Mr C will be asleep long before 12, I may be awake because I often am. Sending a huge hug to Cassie and all my GN friends. Beginning to post on GN this year rather than continue to lurk has made a real difference. Wishing all the very best for the NewnYear.

Charleygirl Sat 31-Dec-16 18:29:30

cornergran you have discovered that the vast majority, not all, do not bite!

I used to celebrate Hogmanay but not nowadays and not since I retired which was in 2002. I will not have any wine tonight as I opened a bottle at Christmas and I do not like to overdo the alcohol. I only drink wine, zilch else.

A good new year to all, especially those who have been feeling poorly for a while.

Wobbly if you make the meal too special, us lot will be on your doorstep! Mrs.P is very lucky. Good luck for the new hip this year

Gagagran Sat 31-Dec-16 18:42:13

It's an early night for us too - not at all keen on NYE and as I have been very poorly over Christmas I need my bed.

I would like to wish everyone, including GNHQ a Happy and Healthy
2017.
flowers for all those feeling alone and sad tonight. I hope that sunshine may be round the corner for you.

I'm so glad to be alive to see 2017 and to have just had my 70th birthday. My dh and two very close friends didn't make it to 70 so I feel very fortunate although I will always, always miss them.

Best Wishes to all on Gransnet and see you in the new year. Thanks to all who gave good advice, kept me informed, made me cry and made me laugh. flowers

I am on my own by choice as, like Azie, I can't be doing with all that forced jollity in a crowded pub and folk kissing who barely speak for the rest of the year. I have just taken DH down to the village in his costume. The theme was TV adverts and he is Foxy Bingo. I have a bag of Twiglets and a bottle of Bailey's and probably Jools Holland. We are both happy.

annsixty Sat 31-Dec-16 20:16:32

My H will be asleep by 8/9 pm as he is everynight. I will be in bed by 9 ;30. It is absolutely fine as age changes so many aspects of life. In my 20s/30s 40s/50s I would have been out , first on the town, then at dinner parties, drinks with friends etc ,now all we want is a good nights sleep.Just eat, have a drink if that is what you like and go to bed. 80% of people will be doing just that.

AlgeswifeVal Sat 31-Dec-16 20:39:02

I would like to wish everyone on here a healthy and happy new year now as I fear I will be tucked up in bed long before midnight.

Luckygirl Sat 31-Dec-16 21:05:20

Enjoy your quiet New Year's Eve - Dawn French is on BBC 4 - that should make you smile! All good wishes for the New Year.

Here I am almost alone ( I know it's not as bad as being on my own) my hardworking husband has fallen asleep. He finished work then came home to a big meal, wine and cheese board. We've been invited out by two families. I feel really ungrateful but I just want to sit here then have an early night. I feel guilty while there are lots of people who'd give their high teeth to be invited out on New Year's Eve and I'm ignoring both invitations. Is it an age thing? I was always a real live wire at parties but honestly I've turned into the most boring old fart person. I'm only 63 surely there's life in the old dog yet? But where has my mojo disappeared too? I'm not depressed or miserable. I just want peace and quiet and relax.

AlieOxon Sat 31-Dec-16 21:36:16

Happy Early New Year all. Goodnight!

Auntieflo Sat 31-Dec-16 21:57:54

Best wishes for the New Year to all Gransnetters. We are off to bed to read, and nurse our coughs. Tomorrow we will be picked up and driven, by DD and SIL, to see DS1 and family. DS2 and family will also be there, and hopefully most of the grownup DGC.
So night night all, and hope the fireworks don't keep too many of us awake later.

AlieOxon Sun 01-Jan-17 06:52:33

I was asleep just after 11, and didn't hear a thing.
Happy New Year!

rubylady Sun 01-Jan-17 07:30:25

I'm still up here. Happy New Year to one and all. I'm not drunk, just can't sleep or spell (there's Tippex all over the screen!).

Sending big hugs to you all, and thanks for a very supportive year. Onwards and upwards. Thinking of you Alie many hugs. X

Cassie sending you lots of hugs too. I know what you mean when you say you just want someone for companionship and a hug but not necessarily a relationship. It is hard to deal with sometimes. Could you get a pet at all? I'd be lost without mine. Xxx

Marnie Tue 03-Jan-17 11:04:12

On my own. Very lonely very sad. Don't see family at all. Sometimes like now wonder if life is worth living. A friend to talk to or go for coffee with is all I dream of. My husband has driven all my friends away over the years and now he has dementia I am just existing. Getting counselling to try to help as I just keep having panic attacks as there is NO ONE in my life.

CariGransnet (GNHQ) Tue 03-Jan-17 11:17:03

Marnie (((hugs)))

Mumsy Tue 03-Jan-17 11:28:28

Marnie, there are hundreds of us in the same boat as you, xmas is always a bad time as most families get together at this time. Only you can make the first step albeit a hard one, its a gradual process I know Ive been there and am still working on it.

grannylyn65 Tue 03-Jan-17 11:33:23

Alone at NY and all the time!

Greenfinch Tue 03-Jan-17 12:22:26

Marnie, could you not contact some of those old friends and explain your change of circumstances. What about contacting your local church. You dont need to be religious. They will befriend you and possibly help with your husband.Ring Samaritans now if you feel bad. They are a!ways there to provide a listening ear.Life must seem particularly grim.Best wishes.
