New Year Resolutions - do you make them?

I have recurrent NY Resolutions mainly around eating less, exercising more and losing weight! ?

This year I want to plan better and keep track of things more, finish my online course bought in last few years but never completed and research and possibly implement turning my sewing and crochet hobbies into a home based business

Do you make any? DH refuses to engage in it so I make them for him which he finds great pleasure in ignoring!!!

I don't make New Years Resolutions as they always seem to be peoples 'pipe dreams' rather than real goals. Instead I have regular reviews several times a year and make goals which I write down. Some of those goals I easily reach others I am still working towards. Last February I set a really major goal of getting to a specific weight to improve my health. I have not got there yet but I am over half way towards it and in November had to go and buy clothes several sizes smaller which I see as a great sign of progress.

Nope, January isnt the month for me to make changes.

I always make resolutions. It's about investing in the future, and, at our ages, making the most of life.
My drastic solution to opened boxes of chocs is bin them and with opened wine and booze to pour it down the sink. It's an alternative to will power, which is so hard to keep on exercising! Fortunately my other-half is in agreement!

I resolve not to mess with perfection!

Soldiering on with total tired house redecoration. Slow but sure. Leaving the difficult until last. Can't think why!! Also booked a holiday yesterday and that injected joy. Onwards...........!

I was late (again) meeting a friend for coffee yesterday. I told her my new year resolution would be to be better organised so as to get to places on time. She agreed and confessed that she ought to resolve that too as she is also always late! How we manage ever to meet up is a mystery to both of us but being late is seriously inconsiderate. We will both do better in 2017 but my question is, why does it take so long to get out of the house? I think I'm ready in good time and actually plan what I'll do with the extra time when I get there early! (I'm an irrepressible optimist.) Then I go to the loo, discover a cup and plate that should be in the dishwasher, let the dogs out for a comfort break, find my keys etc. etc. and am amazed to find I'm 10 mins late before I've left the house! Where does the time go? ?

Never figured out NYR. Must be very English.
I agree that they are pipe dreams made to be broken, and dreams shattered for another year.
Ditto, Lent [giving up of things; never saw the point]
SO - I have things/aims that i make whenever necessary [lose weight is the permanent and unattainable one at the moment...] tchgrin

I tend to not make resolutions as it's so easy to feel bad about yourself if you slip, my friend, last week was so determined to start her diet for her upcoming Summer holiday, I got a phone call the other night, her in tears, saying she felt bad because she'd laid waste to the buffet at her DH's friend's party, I don't put myself through the anguish!

1. Minimum of 10,000 steps a day
2.No sugar- less fat
3.Study the classics because they are referenced everywhere
4.Write something every day

I can keep to these - similar to last year
Happy New Year to you all

Maggiemaybe Sat 31-Dec-16 14:14:23

Yes, I'm reprising last year's. I kept them, sort of tchgrin, for about 3 months, so it's worth trying it all again.
1. 40,000+ steps per week (it was 70,000 last year, but it was just too ambitious)
2. No internet after 8pm
3. Drink some more water

I've given up on "resolutions". If something has to be done, I eventually have to do it.

I am going to try really hard tonot swear anymore.

And if the lady on the self service till next to me in Marks and Sparks this morning, heard what I said (under my breath, I hope) can I take this opportunity to say I am really really sorry.

At this time of year, I'm always reminded of how my DH gave up smoking on 1st Jan 1983 - six months before we were married. He has never smoked since. DH just went "cold turkey" - no help, no nicotine patches, available then! He's made no NYRs since - but that one continues, which is great. (DH says that if he ever had just one cigarette, he thinks he'd be back on smoking - and he still dreams about it!)

Thanks for those links holdthetonic interesting reads. I consistently fail to keep all my resolutions year after year - I should have learned something from this by now!

Morgana Sat 31-Dec-16 17:59:47

going to be on time for meetings!
not going to shout at the tele - especially during the news
going to keep on top of the paperwork
and going to keep on decluttering - thanks GN!

Lona Sat 31-Dec-16 18:11:59

I've resolved not to wash up anymore but to use the dishwasher every two or three days. It's a smallish one so it must be just as economical and use less water than me washing up every day!
Don't try and talk me out of it please! ?

Alima Sat 31-Dec-16 18:23:02

No, don't do NY at all really it just sort of happens. Good luck to those of you who do, especially the ones trying to stay off the pop for the month.

bellsisabelle Sat 31-Dec-16 18:25:43

Actually, I've changed my mind. I will continue swearing until the rest of the human race improves considerably.

Sod New Year resolutions.

TerriBull Sat 31-Dec-16 18:27:59

Lose a stone, take up yoga again, have a good clear out session, take a lot of books to a charity shop with any old dvds and cds my kids have left lying around the house but don't seem to want in their homes, get rid of old bits of make up, re claim one of my sons' old bedrooms which has an empty wadrobe now he has finally taken all of his stuff to his new home. Move a lot of grandchildren's new toys (that stay with us) up there so they aren't cluttering up guest bedroom. Have a dry January and try to eat less once all the Christmas food has gone.

Ana Sat 31-Dec-16 18:29:36

I'm with you, bellsisabelle. The rest of the human race deserves a bit of swearing at (under breath) every now and then!

Janana1 Sat 31-Dec-16 18:48:38

This year my resolution is, 'I'm gonna be me'

Haven't made it yet, with self imposed responsibilities, family expectations etc.

Gets so tiring I'm almost screaming 'give me a break' ..... Well I would if I didn't think that would be the wrong thing to scream!

f77ms Sat 31-Dec-16 18:55:02

I don`t usually make NYRs but have decided this year I will take up watercolour and acrylic painting again . I have all the equipment already so no outlay needed .

I would like to lose a stone , not sure how feasible this is in reality but will give it a go . Also try to stop falling asleep in the afternoons but need to get my insomnia sorted first - I don`t think waking at 5am every morning is helping as by 2-3 pm I am dropping on my feet . I am going to try a Nightol tonight to see if it helps .

carerof123 Sat 31-Dec-16 19:05:04

f77ms please let us know how the Nightol works, i am suffering the same as you, waking early and then by the middle of the afternoon just wanting to sleep, the dark winter afternoons dont help either, so conducive to what i call a 'Nana Nap'!!!

Stansgran Sat 31-Dec-16 20:48:34

Nytol works for DH as he is ratty and crotchety and can't accept that two sleeps is normal. He has two hours awake in the middle of the night and I creep out at 7.30 and let him sleep but I feel I waste my day creeping around in my dressing gown until he wakes up. But he will get used to it so it's a once a week treat for us both.

Moocow Sat 31-Dec-16 21:17:53

I got as far as robthefox and burst out laughing (thought of myself)!
