Listening to the comedy programmes on the radio, when my dad fixed up a speaker on the landing so that we could listen in bed. There was Ted Ray in 'Ray's a Laugh', Jimmy Edwards in 'Take it from Here' and Arthur Askey in his own show. When I was a student, there were 'Round the Horn', 'Beyond our Ken','The Navy Lark', 'A Life of Bliss'...How did I get any studying done?

Oh 'The Navy Lark' - 'Left hand down a bit Mr Philips!' Easy to think it was all a lark but it was all too real in 1960 when HMS Vanguard was being towed from Portsmouth Harbour to a breakers yard in Scotland. The harbour tugs were not strong enough to pull her into the narrow entrance/exit and the battleship almost ploughed into the Still and West pub at the harbour mouth. There is a fantastic photo in the pub of where she came to rest and had to wait for the ocean-going tugs to come in and help pull her clear.

I knew I could rely on GN to remind me of all the radio programmes we listened to. The preparation and consuming of the Sunday Roast took place to their accompaniment (Not so the fat and gristle leftovers which masqueraded as Monday lunch.)

So many of these programmes are now considered politically incorrect. Imagine Julian and Sandy now! Also 'A bachelor gay am I'!! Even the Glumms would not be acceptable

Playing block down the ten foots and backways and being shouted at by the ladies who lived there for making too much noise.

Chippy ladies wearing white turbans to keep their hair up and try to prevent it getting greasy. (My mam was a chippie lady).

Only having a fire and therefore heat in the living room.

Leaving a lit candle in the outside toilet to prevent the water freezing in the bowl.

Coming home from a stay with Grandma with my hair in ringlets which she made with strips of cloth.

Mum and Dad having a whist drive in the living room to boost church funds, and the winner getting a skinned rabbit- for the pot, from the many we kept in war time.

Bbbevan - WHERE DID YOU GROW UP? I WAS IN DERBYSHIRE AND WE HAD WHITSUN MARCHES WITH BANNERS CALLED WHIT WALKS. Sorry about capitals - mistake. Also has now clothes for Whitsun but on the whit walk we (the girls0 also wor straw bonnets and carried baskets of flowers. We had a band too. I loved it.

Yes; I think that was the nursery class which was part of the infants' school.

White dog poo, and dogs wandering free in the streets - even horses occasionally!

We had a gazunda but it was only for liquids and was used after we'd gone to bed.

I went to a day nursery when I was 3 and we had camp beds and blankets for our after lunch sleep. Still remember the blankets were grey and itchy so you had to pull your dress down to cover your legs above your socks. Loads of day nurseries post-war, set up during the war to get women doing war work, most closed in the 1950's.
