My brothers wore short trousers right through primary school*. All boys did in the early sixties. It's only since trousers have become cheaper and more washable that things have changed.

* My mother would have spent half her life patching trousers otherwise.

I've seen losts of photos of George in long trousers. It only seems to be on formal occasions he has to wear the short ones...I'm sure he doesn't mind!

When I was in the worst of that horrible cough virus two months ago I did not want to go out. Keep warm keep well whoever you are. If HM has a horrible viral cold, not even doctors can cure it. All you can do is to make sure there is no serious infection. Mine has just about gone after two months.

Why should Prince William and Kate not have Christmas with their childrens grand parents? Gnrs seem to be damning him if he goes or he doesn't? I would think it a relatively a good thing if they are doing away with tradition for once.

If HM'S cold is as bad as the one my DH, Dad and i have just had, im not suprised she didnt make church.

By 'status,' I meant that traditionally, aristocratic boys are dressed in short trousers, until they graduate to long trousers around the age of 7 or 8. It is seen as middle class to dress young boys in long trousers. William and Kate are emphasising George's status by their choice of his clothes. ( I agree, Marmark1, that William has been / is being, groomed for his future role).

I assume the child wears short trousers because it's his parents choice

Charlotte looks cute in her ditsy print dresses and cardis but why does poor George have to wear short trousers ! There are some very smart long ones for his age.

I don't understand, Marmark1, when you say 'William will do as he is told if he wants to be King.' He will inherit the throne whatever he chooses to do with his life.

George and Charlotte are dressed in accordance with tradition and their status, I think they look lovely.

I hope The Queen makes a full recovery and feels better soon. I wasn't always a royalist, but I can't imagine life without her, I've never experienced any other monarch's reign. She's certainly been the backdrop to my life.

George's coat looked like something from a bygone era, well on a boy at least. Very nice on a girl though, I bought my granddaugher one just like it in John Lewis' sale a couple of years ago. Trivial matter I know but I wish they'd dress him in clothes that are a bit more in keeping with the times we live in. I remarked on this to my husband and he faceouteously said " what do you want to see him in a baseball hat back to front". No just something more typical of the average 3/4 year old boy

If William is king he can invite the middletons to spend Christmas in Windsor or Sandringham

William will do as he's told if he wants to be king.The Middletons will have no say in the matter.

I agree that the Queen's illness is concerning, at age 90. I hope she recovers completely and takes things easy. As for William spending Christmas with the Middletons, it just seems quite natural. Maybe they have decided to do alternate Christmases with each set of parents like many of us have to when families grow. Or just maybe William and Kate want to have a normal Christmas dinner with their children. I know they don't go in for high chairs at the Sandringham lunch, but isn't Christmas Day meant to be a family occasion?

What is the Middleton way? Children spending Christmas with their maternal grandparents ? Queenie wasn't left on her own .

As for Charles he will make a good monarch , if the crown passed to William he would only want the job part time .

I should think (hope) that her doctors are just being extra - cautious. Remember Philip didn't appear on that trip down the Thames, ?last winter? because he had an infection. He's 95!

I felt terribly sorry for Zara and Mike Tindall. Recent pictures have shown them to be loving and fun parents. Their little girl, Mia, is delightful.
