Is the Royal Mail 'fit for purpose'?

Bah, humbug! I'm sick of the Royal Mail in general, but it's even worse at this time of year. And don't use the excuse of Christmas as far fewer people are sending things through the post these days. In the past the demands on the service at this time of year were horrendous, but the mail got through. No longer is that the case.

In our street we do quite a bit of redeliverng of letters and parcels due to the obvious inability of the postman to read the correct number. And I've forwarded on Christmas cards that ought to have gone to Nuneaton and Coventry, where presumably there are streets with the same name as ours.

I posted 6 Christmas cards in the pillar box at the end of our street, all for addresses within a mile of me. All first class. That was Sunday so they caught Monday's 7.00am post. Keeping in mind they all went from the same box at the same time how come one arrived the next day, one on Wednesday, two on Thursday and two have vanished without trace?

I ordered some Salar salmon from one of the Scottish Islands. It never arrived. It appears from the tracking number that it's been residing in the Edinburgh Royal Mail sorting office for over a week, but no one is quite sure hmm The poor staff at Salar salmon say, when I rang them, that parcels have been misdelivered all over the UK. One woman received 5 orders, one of which only was hers and the rest clearly labelled for other customers. They have no option but to 'rely' on the Royal Mail as it's a little island and no other means to transport it. Their business is suffering as a result.

I've just come home to find three letters lying on the wet pavement outside our house!

And did I hear on the news last week that the Royal Mail may go on strike next week in the run up to Christmas? I think they've a cheek.

Like I said before good and bad workers everywhere my son had to put a card through door last week unable to deliver a parcel ( it was school run time ) on his way back saw car outside the house and gave a knock young mum answered door and he was able to deliver her parcel so saved her from going to sorting office as you can guess she was very grateful. We can all have a good versus bad story in every walk of life

I do find Marianne1953's post very objectionable, saying that Royal mail is full of crooks. Our post lady and ALL of the staff at our sorting office are extremely pleasant ans I would trust any of them, I know several of them personally. Additionally Mrs P worked behind the counter at our village post office, she would be mortified if I showed her that post, she is a honest as the day is long. If you have evidence to back up your claims, I suggest you go to the police with them, or stop slandering Royal mail employees across the board. Very nasty post.
I do not intend to report the post as I want people to see just how objectionable it was.

I have just received a birthday card from a friend. It isn't my birthday for a few weeks yet but she likes to send it early and always marks the envelope with a message saying "DO NoT open until your birthday" For the second year running the envelope has been opened (ripped open) and put into a plastic bag saying we are sorry your item got damaged and a phone number. A cynical person might think that "someone" in the sorting office thought that maybe there was something in the card. Money perhaps?

Wobblybits Sun 18-Dec-16 11:49:16

If this has happened two years running surely you should take it further, as you appear to have positive evidence. Personally I would suspect the sorting machines rather than any dishonest individual.

I must be very lucky of all the hundreds of letters and packages I have received only one has ever been significantly damaged, and that was due to totally inadequate packaging (50 tee shirts in a bin bag). However, whilst the address was unreadable apart form the village, our postman spotted the logo on the tee shirts in the parcel and recognised the name of our son's band, and delivered the parcel.

I shall not comment further on this thread as I find the accusations very unpleasant.

Ah, I love Royal Mail, much to the disgust of my son-in-law who works for the opposition grin DGS2 and I love Postman Pat and DSIL claims bitterly that it's very true to life - always something damaged or dropping off the back of his van, and wasting money deploying the helicopter when Pat's forgotten to collect something from the sorting office, is running late after chatting up Mrs Goggins, or has got his head stuck in a tree again...

Seriously, when I think of the number of things I've had delivered safely and cheerfully over the years, in all weathers and sometimes with the address on the front totally wrong, I think they do a great job. A couple of my relatives are still in the habit of putting cash in with cards, and it has always got to us. Though there will, of course, be bad apples in every barrel.

Granfromafar, you probably already do this, but if I send in a postcard competition entry I write the From.. details sideways on the left hand side, in smaller writing.

I agree with Wobblybits that it is most unfair to tarnish the reputations of people who work for the Royal Mail merely on the basis of unsubstantiated suspicions.

No doubt there are a few dishonest people working for the RM, as there are in all walks of life, but that doesn't warrant implying that they are all thieves.

I think this article which was widely reported recently shows that there are employees of the Royal Mail who go out of their way to get post to its intended destination.

I have a grand Postman, always cheerful, always reliable and a pleasure to know .
Our local post offices however are a complete mess , shunted into corners of local shops and no longer private when I'm doing business.

My DD sent my DS a birthday on Friday 9th Dec. She took it to the local PO who said her 1St class stamp would get it the 15 mile journey by his birthday on Monday 12 th. It did not arrive till the following Friday, 16th. We had all met together on Sunday 11th so she would just have given it to him if she'd known his birthday would be long gone by the time the card arrived. It's just not the same afterwards.
Merry Christmas all.

DS1 complained in July that we had forgotten his birthday. We hadn't. Fortunately we had transferred money to him by bank accounts and sent a card which never arrived. Recently Christmas cards were sent from his in laws and all three had been opened. When my DIL went to the sorting office they said there is no form for complaining about mail being tampered with. We now know which town this is happening in but what do we do about it?

Wobblybits Mon 19-Dec-16 14:53:27

This is where to address your complaints along with any evidence.

I find it strange that some of us never seem to have any problems whilst some seem to have repeated problems.

If an employee was opening mail to steal from it, surely they would steal the complete envelope rather than leave evidence.

Reviving this thread as yet again I'm fed up with Royal Mail - I can't say 'our postman' as there's rarely the same one twice. So todays Wooden Top has delivered junk mail x 2, two of almost everything hmm

Can anyone tell me, can I stop this junk mail being delivered? I'm tempted to put each one in an envelope and address it back to the company that sent it - without a stamp so they'll have to pay at the other end.

I had a vague recollection of hearing of this ages ago.

I have sent it back before now but they ignore it.
Our postman is lovely, feel sorry for him having to carry and deliver all this trash.

Jalima Thu 26-Jan-17 14:00:07

sorry

Thanks Jalima - you're always helpful! I can normally cope with the junk mail, but this is a new one....two of everything.

I've sent my photo to customer services. I'll follow your link too.
