Do you still wear an apron ?

I was driving to my local shopping town about 9am. There was a lady who certainly looked in her 80s taking her dustbin back home from where they had been left for collection.

She had her tabard apron on over her clothes. You could just see she was one of those woman who dressed for her morning chores and took them seriously.
I bet her house was a darn sight tidier than mine ever will be.

Day6 a friend of mine still wears a tabard. She's younger than me, only in her early 50's, and I can't imagine where she buys them from!

I'm also reminded that I had to make an apron when I was at school, in Needlework class, for our Domestic Science class. Mine was pink gingham. It was a full one, with a front bib bit and a pocket.

Oh Teetime, I wonder if we attended the same school? . We too had to make our own pinnies and launder them every week (strict instructions of Domestic Science teacher) and never forget them when we had cookery lessons. We also had to launder tablecloths and napkins, learn the order of washing up and yes, prepare clean surfaces before setting out all our ingredients.

This thread reminds me that I have a lovely Christmas apron with holly, ivy and mistletoe sprigs on it. I must wear it this year, as it was a present from a relative who is coming to dinner with us!

I have three aprons. My SIL always wears one and I think it makes her look as though she is proficient in the kitchen - as though she has just made her own bread or something!

Do you remember there was a fashion for tabards many years ago? My mother wore an over-all every day when she was at home. I suspect that betrays my working class background.

I use a blue and white striped 'butchers' apron for cooking. I was taught an apron was essential garb for cooking by my mother and my domestic science teacher both of whom would be horrified by anyone cooking without one on. At school we had to make our own apron before we were allowed to cook anything and to clean down all the surfaces however clean they already were before beginning to cook. We then had to lay out and measure all our ingredients. I still do all of that today.

I thought aprons were back in these days, with all the retro style around. I wear my (homemade from an old pretty curtain) one when I'm baking. My DDs and DS also wear them for cooking.

Yes I do wear an apron because I'm a messy/clumsy cook. I can't imagine how many clothes I would spoil without wearing one ?

i always wear one when cooking or doing something really messy.

I also have gardening aprons which are really useful as the pockets of which there are several take small hand tools.

My daughter now she has her own flat has also started wear aprons, she likes the Cath Kidson ones which are so pretty.

My youngest GD has an apron at my house which she loves to wear when we are baking.

I think an apron was the first thing i made in sewing classes at school, it was a plain white one to be used in the cookery classes.

Always wear one in the kitchen as does DD, DGD got her first apron aged 18 months. I cant bear having a new one as they just dont feel right and take a while to "wear in". I feel they are a bit like a purse you cant buy one for someone else as we all like something different.

Never been in the habit of wearing one before.

I am so messy I have clothes I keep for working round the house. I do have an apron I use if I am wearing anything halfway decent.
I remember my mother having an overall which she wore in the morning then a small frilly apron for the afternoon.

I haven't worn one for years but should because I'm really messy. One of my childminded children questioned whether I was an adult the other day, I asked why and he said "because you make a lot of mess." We were doing playdought . Anyway I did wear one the other day when I was baking and thought it was great!

I wear a pinny when I'm baking, not to keep my clothes clean but to lessen the number of cat and dog hairs falling off me and into the mixing bowl. Despite my efforts someone always picks a hair out of my beautiful perfect cakes.

I tend to use bleach and splash about with it so do bleaching without clothes on ...and rubber gloves an apron covers my modesty if near the window or any one knocks on the door

I wear a big black one for cleaning. My capacity to spill household cleaners over myself, and get dirt all over myself where no dirt is unrivalled. Putting an apron on and off is far less hassle (and cheaper)than changing clothes and dealing with extra loads of washing.

I have aprons for cooking and if planning a cooking session do wear it. Otherwise I mean to but then forget.

I've started wearing an apron again recently, plus a cotton scarf over my hair because with scalp psoriasis my hair sheds easily and I don't want my cooking contaminated with stray hairs .

I can't get away with rubber gloves myself GrandmaKT which is probably one of the reasons why I have terrible nails. I like to be able to feel things when I'm washing up

Yes, can't do the washing up without putting my apron (and rubber gloves) on! I splash greasy water all over myself otherwise.

I always wear a pinny when I'm in the kitchen and have a huge collection dorsetpennt . Some well worn plain ones, some special ones and some that are just too good to use at all.

I wear one for cooking and baking. I am a bit of a messy worker and have a tendency to wipe my hands down my front. Also helps stop my clothes getting greasy and marked.

Only with my Naughty French Maid outfit.

Never have worn one -well that's not strictly true. I very occasionally wear one if cooking something that is likely to mess up a posh outfit like at Christmas lunch. That's a huge chefs apron that cover everything.

Only for baking as I tend to get flour everywhere, no matter how hard I try to be tidy.

I've got two, both cotton and worn & washed to a wonderfully soft texture. I feel like a Proper Mother when I wear one.
