Is your wreath up yet?

I think I could adapt your DH's idea for my front door, Jalima. If I attach a collection of old tin cans to the indoors hook, we'll get fair warning of anyone trying to steal the wreath. It's a bit Bash Street Kids, I know...

No, our wreath and Christmas tree will not be put up until the week before Christmas.

We have DS's Birthday to celebrate before that.

I have a forsythia bush outside my front porch. Every year I trim it in to a ball and cover the top with cotton wool and a huge piece of holy. It looks like a great big Christmas Pudding and brings a smile to a lot of faces. :-)

Still flowers in the Spring amazingly.

Probably next weekend, though I have to rely on my son going in the loft to get the decorations out so it may be later. Last year I bought an artificial tree having had real ones for years. However, the son who wanted one no longer went to get it and it's too much for me to carry. This way saves money as well.

A friend of mine who is really not interested in Xmas, puts the Tree up on Xmas morning purely for her little much adored Grandson, but takes it all down on Xmas night after he has left.

Our trees up and looks great, lovely when you come in from work.

Dd also has a tree and I've put the off cuts in a basket with lights, feels so cosy now. Put them up if they make you happy!

Not until a couple of days before Christmas then everything comes around 29th Dec. I can't bear all the Christmas stuff hanging around in the New Year!

Mine goes up 24th and taken down 30th at the latest. If I had my way I wouldn't bother, years of bah humbug from DH finished off any thoughts of enjoying Christmas although I do my best to put on a good show.

My tree went up 1st Dec, lights are on & fairy is on tree - may get rest of decorations on before I go to visit DM, if not will finish it when I get back. Wreath was hung on door 1st (uPVC door with glass panel - I have large suction hook - Studio Cards I think), went out this morning & wreath & hook on the floor !!!!! Been too busy today but it will go back up tomorrow.

Where I live most people have their decorations up & switched on on 1st & they stay up until 6th Jan.

Tree & decorations never used to go up until the week after 19th Dec as that was Step-Daughter's Birthday. Love having Christmas decorations up even though I'm on my own & going to DD's on Christmas Day

I was brought up not to put any decorations up until Christmas Eve. After all, it is still technically Advent. When my children were small we would wait until my husband came home from work. When the decorating was done, he and I would start on the three litre wine box which would last the whole holiday. Nowadays we are seldom at home for Christmas so I just put the cards up.

I absolutely love Christmas, but I would never put up anything Christmassy until the week before the big day, as I feel it makes it much more special, if the decorations are up too early, it's been there so long it's meaningless. I prefer the anticipation rather than have it all in place weeks before the big day.

dont bother with decorations anymore as Im on my own I dont see the point.

When did this 'custom' of putting a wreath on the door start? I don't remember it from my youth or even later. I don't have a hook or a nail on my front door and have no intention of marring its pristine surface. I don't see many - if any wreaths around here. Our front doors are only a couple of metres, if that, from the road and a wreath would either disappear or be grit and salt spattered but passing traffic. I have a tiny tree which will go up the week after next when my DS and two GSs are coming to visit.

annodomini Yes, I posted that my husband was puzzled about this when we lived in the US.

I don't know if it started there, but being from New England, people put wreaths on the door and leave them up till way after New Year, some even till March! In colonial days I read once that they are a sign of hospitality and because of difficulty getting round in the snow by horse or on foot, it took a while for visitors to make their holiday visits. I have never been able to verify that.

Where we lived some left their outdoor lights etc up until spring, but did not turn them on after the 6th Jan. It could be really cold and the wires would get brittle, or snow too deep to get up on the ladder, so they'd stay on the house till it was milder and sometimes that was spring.

In Williamsburg Virginia, they have a wreath walk as the houses are not open. These are gorgeous!

Victorian Christmas cards often show wreaths on the front door, don't they, but I certainly don't remember them from my childhood (not Victorian, I hasten to add!)? There are Advent wreaths, of course, but not the same shape (Blue Peter used to make them with a couple of coathangers and a few lengths of tinsel.

Am going to wait a bit longer as the singing , gyrating , Elvis- like Santa that is DH's pride and joy terrifies the dogs!

Have not put up anything yet, we always used to wait for the end of term, but DC now put theirs up very early as a result!
Never had a wreath stolen, although it is just on a hook. Googled and there are lots of over the door hooks available.

I'm happy to start when Advent starts so tree went up on Monday, wreath installed on Wed and wrapping of (adult) presents now well under way.
I loop ribbon through the wreath then take ribbon over the top of the door and attach it to a brass cup hook, tying a bow and adding small decorations.

Lovely photos mcem. Good idea re the cup hook and ribbon hanger for the wreath. I may well steal your idea as the rusty hook looks a bit shabby the rest of the year

Thank you. I thought of the ribbon and hook idea last year (having lived here for 20 years - real quick thinking!!!)

We put ours up on the 1st. Have never put them up so early before but this is our first Christmas in our new home and we couldn't wait.
