Pond slime

I see some pond slime amongst us has had a trigger finger problem again. Since I don't know who did it, I won't be calling anyone names by saying that the word I'm thinking now is "Bastards!"

Me too Anya

Blast... battery's going.

Elegran Wed 30-Nov-16 15:31:07

@ ?

gillybob Wed 30-Nov-16 15:31:18

I actually thought this thread was about slime in a pond.I do not have a pond but I do have a kind of water feature and we do get a bit of slime in it in the summer months. [doh emoticon]

Elegran Wed 30-Nov-16 15:32:02

Isn't that a symbol/kind of emoticon?

DaphneBroon Wed 30-Nov-16 15:32:14

I can understand your loyalty to your friend thatbags and your anger at how you feel she has been treated.
You are also angry because you describe the complaints, whatever they were as petty. I am not arguing, but GNHQ are perfectly at liberty to ignore a report, to take no action and explain why to the complainant (plaintiff?)
When I attempted to stand up for kittylester in the face of (to my mind ) unwarranted rudeness, however, I was told in no uncertain terms to butt out and leave kitty and shanma to "slog it out themselves".
I am sorry that terms such as "pond slime", "sneaky underhand, vicious, anonymous little bastards" and "the KKK of GN" etc had to be bandied around causing genuine distress to members who felt they were being identified as such through no fault of their own.
If the argument is principally with GNHQ then it should be addressed to them, if it is with an individual member for drawing attention to the new username, then likewise, but what has bothered me is the vitriol which has permeated some of the comments on this thread, accusations of underhand anonymous behaviour.
The GN community deserves better than the tenor of many of these posts which divide and antagonise, creating an atmosphere of blame and guilt.

Jalima Wed 30-Nov-16 15:36:16

Someone on another thread said that they thought a poster could be jingl.
Yes, I saw that and posted shh
But - I thought she had been allowed back in under a new name and may not have wanted everyone to realise who she was

gillybob you are not the only one, I looked at the thread so that I could let DH have some tips on how to get rid of it.

Jane10 Wed 30-Nov-16 15:37:32

Well said Daphne!
When all is said and done its just a chat forum. Its not the UN. There's no call for the sorts of slurs being bandied about.

Jalima Wed 30-Nov-16 15:52:18

When I attempted to stand up for kittylester in the face of (to my mind ) unwarranted rudeness
Well, I pitched in too because I thought it was unwarranted, not because I am part of any 'group' or 'clique' and now I am in danger of being 'ignored' by a poster.
However, I will never know will I? hmm emoticon

And I think that probably GN noticed and acted re Candlefran - but a lifetime ban does seem to be draconian.

Ana Wed 30-Nov-16 15:59:30

She did give one or two hints as to her identity, to be fair, and I too thought she'd been allowed back on by GNHQ. Apparently not...

yggdrasil Wed 30-Nov-16 16:08:02

Jalima said <Well, I pitched in too because I thought it was unwarranted, not because I am part of any 'group' or 'clique' and now I am in danger of being 'ignored' by a poster.>

Not from me. I don't ignore people, only annoying threads.
But this one is worrying me because I didn't realise how easy it was to pick on someone just because you don't like what they said :-(

Nelliemoser Wed 30-Nov-16 16:08:07

Forgive me for asking wtf this is about . I clearly have not been paying attention.h

thatbags Wed 30-Nov-16 16:11:39

Nobody knows if the argument, as you call it, daphb, is with an individual member who reads (and possibly posts on) the forums. I said right at the beginning that I didn't know who, if anyone, had reported to HQ the fact that they recognised Jingl on other threads yesterday. I'm only presuming that's what happened because HQ have said numerous times that they don't have much time to read threads and why would they look at a birthday greetings thread unless directed there?

I've contacted them directly about Jingl's banishment in the past and been fobbed off. I understand perfectly why I was politely fobbed off. That's their job. Too hard-nosed a remit for me.
If they get directed to this thread, they have full access to it as well.

I'm also taking it up with any gransnetter who wants to read this thread.

I agree absolutely that the forums deserve better than tattle talers calling the shots.

I'm allowed to express my feelings about what looks like unfair treatment. And I'm allowed to put up a verbal fight for someone I regard as a friend.

thatbags Wed 30-Nov-16 16:14:26

And yes, I do think it was a horrible thing to do if someone did flag up Jingl's presence. I do think that doing that would be an underhand, nasty thing to do. So I said so. I don't give a damn if other people don't like my diction. Strong feelings warrant strong words.

Maggiemaybe Wed 30-Nov-16 16:15:28

merlotgran's post of 11:29 explains most of it, Nelliemoser.

My guess would be that GNHQ have acted when jingl was outed as Candlefran. So it looks as though a ban is a ban for life? Even murderers get better treatment than that sad

thatbags Wed 30-Nov-16 16:16:05

Nothing I have said has been personally directed at any particular gransnetter, singular or plural, nor at any particular HQ-er. I've been talking about the principle of tattle. I despise it.

thatbags Wed 30-Nov-16 16:17:14

I guessed the same, mm.

Luckygirl Wed 30-Nov-16 16:17:35

Well said Daphne! - and Jane10 - and Nellie you are forgiven for your ignorance - TBH you are better not knowing - ignorance is indeed bliss in this case. (It is explained upthread by merlot)

This lady has not lost her passport or been denied her nationality or indeed anything of any importance whatsoever. This is a web forum, and implicit in joining is that you are happy to abide by the rules; and it is just a small adjunct to real life not life itself.

Some of the comments implying that those who did not understand what this thread was about were being dishonest have been hurtful and unnecessary.

There is nothing to stop people communicating in other ways outside of this forum if they wish to.

thatbags Wed 30-Nov-16 16:18:19

Tattle that is deliberately to get someone else into trouble is despicable.

thatbags Wed 30-Nov-16 16:22:20

You're right, lucky, about people contacting each other outside the forum, except that if one's GN membership is suspended, one's method of contacting friends one has made on here is stymied.

Gransnet forums have been an important medium through which friendships have been made. Not all of those friendships have extended into other media.

Maggiemaybe Wed 30-Nov-16 16:22:40

I saw an outing on the Gransnet today thread, which GNHQ were watching, and had commented on. Which is not to say that some tittle-tattle didn't throw their twopennorth in as well. I'm sure the outing on that thread wasn't malicious, btw, just someone letting us know they'd put two and two together (which I hadn't).

Ana Wed 30-Nov-16 16:25:04

Indeed there isn't. I'm sure some do it already.

Saying that GN is just a web site and if you can't abide by the rules you shouldn't join is a bit simplistic. And GN membership is obviously more important in some people's lives than in others, especially the housebound, lonely or disabled.

Plus, many of us have forged virtual friendships over the years and can't just stand back and accept that someone should be banned for life for making GNHQ's jobs a little bit harder. *jingl' deserves more than that.

Ana Wed 30-Nov-16 16:27:31

(blimey my posts are going very slowly this afternoon!)

Maggiemaybe Wed 30-Nov-16 16:32:20

Being barred isn't life-threatening, of course, but not having access to GN would certainly leave a big boring hole in my life, and would affect some, who look to it for support and company, so much more.

Perhaps we should ask for a referendum? I for one would be voting to keep posters who make the site worth logging on to. Grannynet bored itself to death - please don't let this happen to Gransnet.

TriciaF Wed 30-Nov-16 16:38:44

Another one here who thought the thread was really about a pond problem. Then put 2 and 2 together, having just read the Gransnet Today thread.
In a way, I wish the report button could be removed. It's just an invitation to nastiness. Best to rebuke on open forum.
But then the informers would resort to pms to GNHQ.
