Snow - love it or hate it?

I walked up Blencathra yesterday with my walking group. There was about nine inches of snow on the top. I loved it especially as I tried out my Microspikes on my walking boots for the first time.

I love snow but in Edinburgh we don't get much.

Hate it!

Snow isn't the problem, that it thaws and then refreezes is! It snowed on a Friday and I managed to get to and from work by train and walking. Monday was a nightmare, my usual 20 minute walk to the station took 45 mins and on the last bit, despite wearing Timberland boots, I almost landed on my backside (the triple salchow was pretty impressive ). If it snows this winter I'm staying home (unless it's mid/ late Feb when nothing is going to stop me being at the birth of DGD no 2)

This week we have had my favourite kind of snow - the kind that falls and lies on the hills but not on the roads.

Agree with other gransnetters, lovely to look at, conjures up lovely memories of Christmasses past, but a real worry for travellers☃️ Brhh

I would prefer not to have snow....but obviously it isn't something I can control!

Yes, it's lovely to look at out of the window when you are cosy inside with the heating on and plenty to eat.......but there is a lot of associated chaos and danger for those forced to go out in it.

It's lovely to look at - not so lovely trying to get about, especially when it all turns to ice or slush.

Masses of it in Stockholm today. Swedish friend living here sent me a picture of her son's balcony, looks like about six inches. Her son missed a flight to London because the bus got stuck! Took him 3 1/2 hours to walk a journey that usually takes 25 mins.
And there was I thinking that these Scandi types were always geared up for snow....

Love snow, I was so excited this morning at 6.30 when it was snowing steadily. Then it all disappeared.

Love love love snow.... everything looks so pretty and fresh and it seems so much quieter when snow is on the ground.Its special when you get snowed in, warm soup, snowman and feel good films.

Plenty of lovely silvery white snow here a few years ago ( mostly we don't get any) woke up to a white wonderland one morning and took photos before anyone stepped in it to make footprints, magical.

Love to watch snow falling & when it's first all pristine & looks beautiful. Hate it when it gets slushy or freezes. I don't go out if I don't have to as our road onto main road is not cleared. Winter of 62/63 we were snowed in for 2 weeks, snowdrift at corner of road above our house was so solid they had to get a JCB to clear it, missed school for 2 weeks but even then as a 7 year old we got fed up of it (lived in Yorkshire close to Dales). Now I live in Devon we don't get as much although Dartmoor does & that's only a few miles away.

I absolutely love the snow - when I am looking out of the window and have the wood burner blazing!

The most wonderful thing about snowflakes is how each of them is completely unique. Discovering this (again) with the DGC is priceless.

I grew up in Labrador in northern Canada and even after 40 years in the U.K. I still miss the snowy winters. We don't get snow very often down here in Sussex but I love the change in the light when there is snow on the ground and still get excited when snow is forecast. Of course being retired and not having to get out to work in snowy conditions is a bonus.

We here in Canada get buried in snow from December to March (april if we are really unlucky)which is why many of us take flight down to Florida in the winter months.Not sure how many of us will be heading south now that the US has "The Donald" for president!!!

Bellanonna - snow is not just snow- there are dozen of different types - and in French we have a whole panoply of vocabulary to describe them.

Even in the UK, don't you remember the train debacle and the British Rail announcement re 'the wrong kind of snow'?

For me, UK snow is wet, grey horrible slush

and Swiss snow, lovely fluffy twinkly powder snow

Still snowing out there ...not stopped for 3 days and nights.

Main difference is our houses are built for it, our roads are cleared constantly, night and day and we al have suitable cars with proper snow tyres. It works. Vive la neige

Love it in theory but not in practice especially now as I'm learning to walk again! I can totter without any help

Looks beautiful when not walked or driven on but a horrid mess after a day , i now can choose to stay in or go out when it snows my choice stay indoors

I used to hate snow when I worked. I was always worried about driving in it and not getting to work on time or worse still, not being able to get home. I retired in April so it will be interesting to see how I feel about it now I don't have to drive in it.

Now that I don't have the nightmare of getting to work every day I would love the snow to come, but not enough to be snowed in of course. However living on the west coast of Scotland it seems to pass us by altogether, or not last.
I can see a sprinkling up on the hills this morning, looks lovely.

I hate the effects of snow: traffic slowed or stopped, being trapped in the village, slush, the danger of falls on ice and so on.

However, when the flakes are falling and the ground carpeted in unwonted white I cannot but acknowledge and love its beauty.

It's slushy here this morning, but the sky is full of it. I find it mesmerising to watch, but put spikes on my wellies as I hate that feeling of insecurity. I don't like the feeling of being trapped, not going to work, not driving.

Up to last Feb for 16 years did a daily paper round every morning 360 days a year. Then decided that I was getting too old and gave it up! Still feel guilty about my elderly and disabled customers (no time for those with cars who could pick up their own!), but hated those dark winter icy mornings when I was terrified to death of falling. Now it's great being able to go out if I feel so inclined but without the pressure, and even better to look out at the rain, snow, ice, slush and know I don't have to go out in it. Even better that I no longer have to bear the brunt of the moaning Minnies who eternally complained on those days when there was no way to prevent the papers getting sodden because I was a dripping icicle, "My paper's wet - can't read that!"
