Another option to moisten it is to sprinkle fruit juice over it and allow time for it to be absorbed. Not that I've ever done that, of course! wink blush

Oh, thanks for the suggestions, spread with butter sounds just our cup of tea.

Auntieflo I expect it will be fine but if it is a little dry then you could serve it as a pudding, slightly warmed and topped with ice cream or custard. I know certain 'boys' who would do anything for that kind of pudding! grin

Auntieflo....it will probably be fine....back in the bad old days my Mum always added a higher proportion of flour to a fruit cake than is now fashionable.....10oz to a 6oz fat recipe etc. It helped it go further.....and in worse case scenario you could always treat it like a Fruit loaf, like the Welsh thing I can't spell....and spread the slices with butter Yum.

If you don't own up to your mistake I am sure the fruit cake will be eaten too! If dry you could always serve it like a fruit loaf spread with butter.
Feeling hungry now!cupcake

On Thursday, I decided to make an Apple Cake, and a Fruit Cake. So far , so good. While the cooked dried fruit mixture was cooling, I made the Apple Cake, which went according to plan. So while it was in the oven, I finished preparing the Fruit Cake. The recipe said, pour the batter into the tin, well mine needed scraping out of the mixing bowl. Now, I have made this cake before and it usually is fine. It came out of the oven, looked like a cake, smelt like a cake, so what have I done? Then I realised, the recipe calls for just 4ozs each of self raising flour and plain flour. I have added 8 ozs of each? . I haven't dared cut into it yet, and I may need a hoard of hungry boys, who will eat anything. At least it will be a rib-sticker. The Apple Cake was fine, and is nearly all gone.
