gransnet abbreviations? Please explain them to anewbie

D for daughter, S for son or sister, H for husband, and a D before them stands for anything beginning with D that is appropriate - dear, darling, dratted, damned - depending on what they have done.

SiL is son-inlaw or sister-in-law. Some others are obvious, but there is a list of acronyms that you reach by selecting the "acronym" link at the right-hand-nde of the coloured strip at the top of to post, jsut after "Lat Day" and FAQs".

Of course, sometimes people make up their own abbreviations as they go along - like the rest of us, you just have to guess at what those mean!

There is a button at the top called Acronyms which will explain. I think it is annoying, it doesn't take that long to type who you are talking about, and let's be honest, they aren't all 'dear' anything.
Some people just like unnecessary jargon

Some of them are VERY much damned - but just using one letter somehow seems a bit mingy, and typing the whole lot takes a long time for us two-finger typers with arthritic fingers.
A sentence like "When the GC were young, DH said to DgS2 that he shouldn't hit DGD3 on the head with DGS1's Thomas the tank engine. DG2 went crying to DiL, who took his side and she and DS fell out over it. DiL's MiL and FiL joined in, so there was an almighty row. DGD3 was already in tears, and DGS1 and DGS2 both joined in." would take a lot more finger-work without the acronyms, and take up even more space.

Still room for mistakes though - " DG2 went crying to DiL" should have read " DGS2 went . . . ."

How do you know the D doesn't sometimes, or even often, stand for dratted rather than dear, ygg?

Because that Acronyms list shows them all as Dear or Darling.
Wouldn't be so bad if it just said D or S, or GS or GD but it it still a difficult thing to read.

well, tbh DH and sometimes it's DDH is a bit confusing, I mean FGS SIL can be soninlaw or sisterinlaw, and DS may mean son or your local detective sergeant.IABU to think FFS should be banned anyway [though often tempted to use it.]

Well, we don't want to spread it around too widely that sometimes our nearest and dearest are not so Dear or Darling, do we?.

I certainly don't think that FFS should be banned! Swearing isn't against the GN rules although I very rarely do so myself.

Used sparinly the odd expletive can be remarkably effective...
