Weather on the days your kids were born

The first two were born at home .
DS1 born Oct 1963. Indian summer weather,and the darling neighbours wouldn't go out to their friends, until he was safely born.
DD1 born April 1966. Don't remember the weather, I had a fluey cold. DH and midwife listening to classical violin music, and left me to get on with it. She now plays the violin.
DS2 born July 1975 in a heatwave, but in hospital this time

Mine were all summer babies (well-planned) but the weather was the last thing on my mind and all born at night so I wouldn't have noticed the weather in between screams.
All 4 of my babies were induced so I never experienced travelling to hospital whilst in labour either.
I do remember the weather after Baby 3 came home on August Bank Holiday because it rained solidly for the next 6 weeks and I never hung out a nappy until she was nearly 8 weeks old.

Early Sept '71 when my eldest was born was a glorious day - I waddled to the mini we had at the time 'dribbling' all the way down the stairs from the flat we lived in as my waters had broken at 4am. The car was only doing 2 miles to the gallon so it was touch and go whether we'd get to the hospital - the matron met us at the door and sent my husband off to work. We were both only 17 at the time and that was the norm in those days - baby arrived at 4pm and his dad had to wait until visiting time to find out what he'd got! Son no 2 was born at the end of Sept '74 when we'd had the hottest summer 'in living memory' and took 2 days to arrive - it was also a glorious day which I remember as the sun was streaming in the room after he was born at 9am in the morning. Both entailed 10 days in hospital - seems archaic now when they're home in hours!

My 3 daughters were born in April, November and January and were all snow babies. January 1978 in Sussex was horrendous and I was dreading the journey to hospital as two days previously an ambulance got stuck in a snowdrift and the occupant gave birth there and then and had to be rescued by helicopter . They are all keen skiers; not sure if the snowy conditions on the days of their birth have anything to do with it!

I can't remember what the weather was like yesterday, however I can remember when my son was born it was the begining of September and there was a hospital fete going on, a sunny warm day the window was open and all I could hear were happy voices and kids laughing and squealing I was screaming too and being sick with the pain My eldest was born in the tropics so that s a clue, but my youngest no idea

Snowing when my eldest was born, but that was okay as I only had to walk to the ambulance.
A thunderstorm when the youngest was born. I know because I had to walk over the fields in it from the bus, carrying his brother who was two and a half at the time.
He was born within half an hour of us getting in the flat. Not expected as I had a bed booked for the next day in the hospital.

Nothing to do with the weather but as I mentioned upthread, DS was born at home. We had previously booked an electrician to do a bit or re-wiring upstairs but when I went into labour ten days early we forgot all about it.

The poor man arrived, tool box in hand and my daft mother let him in without explaining what was going on. I had met him before because he was married to a woman I had worked with so when he appeared at the bedroom door I just sat up and said, 'Hello, John' then fell back and concentrated on my breathing.

His face was a picture.

There seem to be a huge amount of snowy days remembered, were you all living in Scotland? Or Norway?
Middlesex!

This was beginning of December 1981 in the north west, and I remember the nappies freezing on the washing line most of the winter.
I remember that well, we were in the south-east and there were long icicles hanging off our gutters which DH knocked down in case they fell down and spiked someone. I slipped over in the snow and ice (7 months pregnant)! My neighbour kindly took the others to school until the ice melted.

Freezing cold: No 1; boiling hot: No 2; don't know: No 3 (confined in hospital previously).

Ah greyduster the perfect four year gap (IMHO)There was time to learn it all through NO.1 and he had started PlaySchool when No. 2 arrived which meant I could thoroughly bond with No2. And they have always been the best of friends with a loving dynamic going on between them. They watch out for each other now whilst I live it up in France!

specki I have just noticed that the years that your children were born correspond with mine ?!

DS was born in the Military Hospital in Singapore, in April, in stifling heat and humidity that I had struggled with all through my pregnancy. It was a long and difficult birth. The maternity ward was open ended with a corridor at each end. My lasting impression is of the Ghurka wives, who had also given birth, sleeping in one of the corridors on wooden beds that were very low to the ground. They also took their meals there. In the other corridor we had our dining area and a sitting area. I was in there a week and I hated every minute of it.
DD was born in January, in Belgium. We had had snow, and our progress to the American Military Hospital in the car was so slow I was beginning to think she'd beat us to it, but no. It was a wonderful birth and they looked after their mothers so well. It was like a hotel!

DS March 1971 - beautiful sunny spring day. Had some freesias in a bouquet on my locker and always think of that special day if I smell them now.

DD March 1973 - another lovely spring day with warm sun. I was so pleased that both of them were welcomed to the world in sunshine! She made a fast appearance and I was able to phone DH (who had to look after DS at home) and say "We have a little girl".

Leap Year's Day '76 frosty and cold (Sth East London) it snowed whilst I was in hospital.

19 April '78 (Sth West London) bright and sunny. Though i have a recollection of it being cold and snowy before she was born

1st born exactly at midnight, so remember wondering which day to choose as his birthday date. No idea of the weather
2nd born - no idea. Just so pleased he'd finally arrived, as he was very overdue.

Yourcomment about twin tubs and no dryer specki reminded me that I had no washing machine, no dryer, no CH only one coal fire. Washing was a nightmare as everytning had to be done by hand even bed linen. Have to laugh now when younger generation go into meltdown bwcause they have to wait 48 hours for delivery of new machine.

DS1, glorious spring weather in April 1971.
DS2, Freezing fog in January 1973. We could hear the sirens of police and ambulances attending to pile-ups on the M1.

8 November 1967- Thick fog. Baby boy arrived one month early, therefore towelling nappies not pre-washed (as ordained by my Mum), so she couldnt visit me because of trying to get nappies washed and dried with only a twin tub and without a dryer.
16 November 1971 - Thick fog. Home birth of second boy & I had to wait for midwife to finish watching Crossroads before she would venture out into the gloom!
No dryers, no recording facilities, twin tub washer How ever did we cope? And how come those boys are now captains of industry!

Daughter born July 77 in Berlin (army). Weather gorgous, sun blaring in the window. But I began shaking, nurse asked what was wrong, I told her I don't know, I'm cooold. She panicked and threw some covers over me. Seems I went into shock cause she was born so quick.

First one, windy practically a gale. Didn't like to think of the omens! But all was fine. The other two don't remember at all. Couldn't have been as extreme...

Like Maranta, my eldest was due Dec 81/Jan 82. The ice and snow were about 18" deep on the pavement and I hoped I wouldn't have to walk to the hospital if I started labour whilst DH was at work. In the end, he was induced, so the trip to hospital was planned and DH had the day off.

No 2 was born in November 1983 and I'm sure there was a thunderstorm, though, to this day, I can't work out how come there was a thunderstorm in November! That DS has lived up to it with his impetuousness and temper ever since!

D was October '87 haven't a clue about the weather. I'd been on antenatal ward for 7 days prior.
S was February '91 I'd had a couple of stays on the antenatal ward but they wouldn't let me go home this time as that was 30 miles away and they thought I might get snowed in ! Plus the hospital was on top of a steep hill so I spent the week before he was born watching the heavy snow from the day room window. I can't remember if it snowed on the actual day.

My son was July 1976 the heatwave Summer the night was born the weather broke and I stood at the window with him in my arms in the early hours watching the storm.
The others I don't remember other than it was cold.

Cold, frost, and snow feature in all three of mine. One in December and two in February. Would have been nice to have a summer baby!
