Following on from the recent "sad song" thread can we share which song instantly takes you back to "your era" and give the approximate year.
For me it's 1968 and there are many (great music in the late 60s)....Everlasting Love by Love affair, Young girl by Gary Pucket and the Union Gap, The Mighty Quinn by Manfred Mann to name a few.

Daisygirl I used to work in an office of four women in an engineering works, the work experience scheme. The sales manager was a scouser called Bob and when "I want to be Bobby's girl" came on the radio, he would bound into the main office and sing along with it, not narcissistic at all. grin

He was known as Bobby one ball as he had had one testicle removed. The remaining one still made two children though.

We got him back one April Fool when we got a firm he sold to to phone up and tell him that all the tubing he had sent on his last order had to be returned as it was drilled our wrong! He was having a fit until one of the other women held up an April Fool sign at his door. It still took him a minute or two to cotton on! Good days. smile

Only 16 by Craig Douglas, because I was 16 when it came out and I thought he was singing it just for me. I joined his fan club and met him twice, the second time to hand over a scrap book I made of loads of cuttings I had found about him. He was very pleased and was going to give it to his Mum!

Just read through this thread and Kim19 I remember David Whitfield sooo well. i wasn't a youth at the time I was only 12 ( in 1959) but I will never forget my Mother playing ' Cara Mia '. I think my Dad had got a record player from somewhere and she played it over and over. My parents split up a year later but that song always makes me think of happy times. I still love it to this day what a fab voice he had.

Magic Moments always reminds me of being little at home with my mother.

Puppy Love always reminds me of being 13 with a crush on Donny Osmond.

Loads of songs remind me of the summer of '76 - I'd just finished O Levels and spent the summer listening to Joybringer by Manfred Mann, Peter Frampton, Kiki Dee and Elton John and ELO.

FM by Steely Dan always reminds me of setting off for University, as does Forever Autumn by Justin Haywood.

Parallel Lines by Blondie and Steely Dan's Greatest Hits remind me of my first year in Uni.

Don't Know Why by Norah Jones reminds me of my dd being a baby crawling round the new house.

Anyone remember "Michael rowed the boat ashore" I think it was called that. That reminds me of being very little at home with my mum.

I remember having my first teenage party with my special beau of the time and we danced to 123 by Len Barry.

I was sitting on the beach in Menorca drinking rum and Coke listening to Whiter Shade of Pale by Procol Harem.

Watching Stevie Wonder live singing Signed, Sealed, Delivered. FANTASTIC !

I could go on for hours but others will have their own memories.

Luckygirl Thu 20-Oct-16 20:31:17

Gary Puckett and the Union Gap singing Young Girl - just don't ask.

rosesarered Thu 20-Oct-16 20:36:03

Nan tut tut, rum and cokes aged 12! grin

lemondrizzle Thu 20-Oct-16 20:40:55

I was madly in love with Gary Pucket, Steve Ellis from Love Affair and Steve Marriot from the Small Faces.

Ana Thu 20-Oct-16 20:41:35

roses, I remembered to google Summer in the City and we were both wrong! grin Apparently the line is:

'Back of my neck getting dirty and gritty'

rosesarered Thu 20-Oct-16 20:42:23

What, all at the same time lemon?

rosesarered Thu 20-Oct-16 20:43:10

Haha Ana thanks for googling, mind you, I prefer my version! grin

rosesarered Thu 20-Oct-16 20:45:09

Jud am sure you are right, as I was listening to local radio, and they get things wrong all the time ( whiter shade of pale).... anyone care to dance the light fandango?

rosesarered Thu 20-Oct-16 20:45:35

Or was it 'trip' the light fandango?

merrellina Thu 20-Oct-16 20:58:29

I must be a lot older than you all because " Tell Laura I Love Her" really whisks me back ! It was playing on the juke box in the local village pub,we managed to sneak in and local lads bought us a Babycham complete with a cherry on a cocktail stick. Oh the height of sophistication ! My friend and I were fourteen .

Time it was

time it was

A time of innocence
a time of confidences.

Norman Greenbaum - Spirit in the Sky, played at our school lunchtime discos 1969/70. I was around 15 & it always brings back happy memories. smile

So many others throughout 60s/early 70s. Loved Rolling Stones, Beatles, Bob Dylan, Beach Boys, Everley Brothers so many more & of course my absolute favourite band Queen - my entire list would bore you hmm

Just trying to work out the earliest songs I remember. We had an old wind up gramophone in a wooden cabinet (made by my great grandfather I believe). Dad somehow made it work electrically (and probably lethally - but we all survived!) Anyway the first records I actually remember being played on it were Guy Mitchell 'Singing the Blues' and Pat Boone 'Friendly Persuasion' in about 1956 I think. I still remember all the words and to this day I love the line, 'Thee pleasures me in a hundred ways'.

GrandmaL Fri 21-Oct-16 04:08:08

Maggie May by Rod Stewart
Hey Jude ( often last song played at school dance for a close dance!)
Those Were the Days My Friend...

mancgirl Fri 21-Oct-16 08:18:26

All the songs from the 60's take me back to when I was that pretty girl with the long hair and short skirts too! Beatles, beach boys, soul music and just the chart music of the day. BBC radio Manchester has Seeeny's 60's classics on each Sunday afternoon for 3 hours. In my mind I'm back there. Blisssmile!

mancgirl Fri 21-Oct-16 08:19:38

Sorry Sweeny's 60's classics!

LullyDully Fri 21-Oct-16 08:41:10

I suppose every generation has its music but the 60s/ 70s music was very good. We were lucky. So many good musicians who seemed to be self taught, the Blues and Motown .I agree with all of the above and lots by our new Nobel laureate Dylan T
