Following on from the thread about needing a tumble dryer in a holiday cottage, I would like to invite your contributions to a thread on cottage horror stories.
We once went to South Wales with our 3 children and a friend each - I was recovering from a hysterectomy and the house was let to us via the parish mag and was owned by someone we vaguely knew. When we got there it was FILTHY - the oven was caked in grease and there was a gaggle of spiders and webs in there. The beds were so disgusting that even the teenagers refused to sleep in them, preferring the disgusting floor to sleep on. To give you some idea how disgusting the beds must have been, the floor was so filthy that your feet stuck to the carpet.
The saucepans were pitted and pockmarked and had ingrained grease in the holes. I will not describe the toilet - but will just say that when I attempted to go in there in the night I was met with a slithering floor that was covered in silverfish.
We went to the tourist info the next morning and managed to hire two caravans on a nearby site.
I sent a message to the owners that we were leaving, and they had the nerve to try and rent it to someone else for the remaining 6 days! He was a solicitor and I did not bother to try and get our money back - I knew he would wriggle out of it. But I did let the vicar know and suggested that he make sure the parish mag team reused to print the advert any more.
What sort of family would you not want to marry into?
