Happy birthday Jingle
Hope you have had a good day. flowerswine cupcake
Tried to PM you but wont accept message so dont know if you are having a break away from GN, I am not around much so out the loop.

BBbevan Thu 29-Sept-16 13:01:59

I don't understand any of this. Do you all read all the posts all the time, so know who is or isn't on ?
I can understand someone being banned for being deliberately rude or offensive. But Jings , I thought was just acerbic and direct. Banning is a little Draconian
I shall stick with the non- contentious posts. Much less stress

I hope she comes back soon

soop Thu 29-Sept-16 12:09:38

I would be delighted to have jings back where she belongs...she has a good heart. flowers

merlotgran Thu 29-Sept-16 11:49:55

The 'Thank You' thread which was recently deleted was full of unkind vitriolic comments towards a couple of posters. I did wonder why jingl wasn't taking part and now I know.

Jingl had stood up for one of them on a previous thread and yet the people who posted comments which led to a whole thread being deleted are now nodding sagely and probably hanging out the bunting in a place which I won't mention.

You know who you are.

Penstemmon Thu 29-Sept-16 11:25:07

Sometimes posters are over sensitive and sometimes others are over-barbed making comments too personal. Argue the point not the person.
I am not a regular poster so rarely note absences or /namechanges..

More interesting things to do in RL than worry about OL squabbles!

Gagagran Thu 29-Sept-16 11:11:31

Well I miss jings and her salty humour. She often makes me smile and GN is the poorer without her. I am thinking of going on hunger strike until Big Sisters let her come back.

thatbags Thu 29-Sept-16 11:11:02

I've talked about virtue signalling and I haven't been banned.

Just saying.

I did try to make sure that I was talking about a kind of behaviour, not about a person. After all, like most of us probably, I'm sure I've been guilty of engaging in virtue signalling myself. One should be able to talk about the issue of virtue signalling without people feeling insulted.

Nelliemoser Thu 29-Sept-16 11:04:44

I have very occaisionally reported posts.

Why if a member has seriously broken the posting guideline should everyone know the reasons. It should stay a private matter between GN and the poster.

Without this we could be posting and gossiping about what has gone on which raises the rumour machines tendency to irresponsible conclusions.

annodomini Thu 29-Sept-16 10:55:08

Well said, annsixty. I see that a majority of posters on this thread have highly selective memories. I don't propose to write a thread about a thread, but the phrase 'virtue signalling' may remind you of a quite recent completely unjustified verbal assault on an innocent member of G'net.

Jalima Thu 29-Sept-16 10:50:55

Galen you called jingls 'Rose' on this thread; I was confused but thought you were sending her a rose for her birthday!

Jalima Thu 29-Sept-16 10:43:34

jessielovestuna I don't really look at MN but DH always says that if you start swearing then it shows you are losing the argument.

I've often heard him lose the argument with a hammer when it bashes him on the thumb though grin

Mildred Thu 29-Sept-16 10:31:57

Jing was direct, blunt but her star quality was she was not a Job's comforter.

NanKate Thu 29-Sept-16 10:23:13

What I would like to know from HQ is if you have given Jing a Life Sentence, 5 years with parole or a one week ban ?

I miss seeing her acerbic comments. She has upset me at times but I would rather have her back on GN than banished forever.

Please rethink your decision.

I suppose if you do allow her back she may tell you in no uncertain terms what to do with your offer, but I suspect she misses us like we miss her.

Please offer the Olive Branch.

Swanny Thu 29-Sept-16 10:18:10

Daphne Yes cross posted with LaraGransnet

Luckygirl I was agreeing with your post. The I miss Jings was my comment - perhaps I should have started a new paragraph and made that clearer.

annsixty Thu 29-Sept-16 10:16:35

One of jings which I didnt report but another member did and it was deleted.
I commented recently that she had mellowed.

glassortwo Thu 29-Sept-16 10:15:40

If we want GN to survive we need to toughen up and if you don't like a thread move to another.

But do we really need this Nanny state!

Ana Thu 29-Sept-16 10:10:22

Do you mean one of jingl's posts, or just generally, ann?

annsixty Thu 29-Sept-16 10:07:47

I can only assume all those posting on this and the other thread have never been insulted and hurt by a post. I have.

Luckygirl Thu 29-Sept-16 10:06:03

Swanny -I did not say that I miss Jings! - I am sometimes glad of a break from the aggro! I said that we are free to ignore her and that she knows full well what she is doing!

I think this thread should come to an end now or she will just feed on the attention!

Thank you Lara for your clarifications. I can see that if threads are consistently hi-jacked and sent of the rails then this is something you need to keep an eye on.

whitewave Thu 29-Sept-16 10:05:51

Xposted with Lara. Not much clearer though.

whitewave Thu 29-Sept-16 10:04:17

I can't understand all this reporting. It is like running to teacher.

I have never reported and as far as I know never been reported.

If someone insults or annoys me I simply ignore them. I gloss over their posts and concentrate on others. Why on earth can't others do the same.

I am also not addicted to having the last word, or to making personal comments to people that are derogatory. The point is I don't "know" anybody on here. I know what people say about themselves but you never know anyone until you have a face to face relationship and even then it isn't easy. To be insulting and personal is not very clever or amusing. It does say something about the poster though and I often wonder about their poor families!

Perhaps we ought to have a symbol that indicates if we are feeling unhappy about what someone has just said that is personal. A hammer might be good! jing would probably pile up a few, but that's jing. She would equally pile up a few thank you so for her kind and thoughtful posts.

DaphneBroon Thu 29-Sept-16 10:02:49

Swanny- what makes you conclude that anybody has been "summarily expelled"? Or did your post cross with LaraGransnet's?

DaphneBroon Thu 29-Sept-16 10:01:19

Fair enough LaraGransnet - now can we stop beating our collective breasts and get back to cardis, fluffy kittens, cake recipes, knitting, last night''s TV some of the topics for discussion which bring out the best of GN?
There's more going on in RL -good and bad!

Swanny Thu 29-Sept-16 09:59:20

Luckygirl 08.53 today - Hear Hear! I miss Jings. I looked forward to her posts as they were always relevant and often a reflection of my own thoughts; only more succinctly expressed and quicker typed smile

I'm afraid I thought Jings was having a little holiday too, so I'm very sad to hear she's been summarily expelled. Justice has to be seen to be fair.

What a boring old world it would be if we were all the same sad

LaraGransnet (GNHQ) Thu 29-Sept-16 09:55:44

We're reading this thread and taking note of what you're saying which is all really helpful. As some of you have noted, moderation is tricky and we do try to always find the right balance - and we have held our hands up when we've got it wrong. We have guidelines - not many - and we think they are as clear as we can make them and we don't want to add more rules unnecessarily. Making the call on whether or not a post is deletable is not always clear cut and we do rely on our personal judgement. We don't delete every post that is reported, probably not even a tenth of that, so although it may look that way depending on what thread you're on, we're certainly not heavy-handed with the Big Red Button and do try to take everything into consideration before we do so.
When it comes to users being banned, aside from the obvious spammers, we've banned only a handful of users over the years and that's after many conversations with them and usually a bit more happening behind the scenes. We understand it's going to be impossible to keep everyone happy but hopefully this goes some way to make things clearer.

Nelliemoser Thu 29-Sept-16 09:47:10

There should be some sort of restriction on nasty and vindictive posts to and about others or this will just descend into chaos. Such remarks have been heard on GN.

There are those who just cannot walk away from a percieved insult or are addicted to last wordism.

Jings oneliners are often funny but she will get carried away.

I do wish that if someone flounces off on here people would stop begging them to come back. We are supposed to be adults and take resposibilty for our actions. If you flounce off like a teenager you should be ignored like a stroppy teenager.
