Happy birthday Jingle
Hope you have had a good day. flowerswine cupcake
Tried to PM you but wont accept message so dont know if you are having a break away from GN, I am not around much so out the loop.

obieone Thu 29-Sept-16 17:19:16

No merlotgran, no bells are ringing at all. I havent a clue what you are saying.

janeainsworth, agree with first sentence.

Second sentence, dont agree, as some posters "know" each other on gransnet at least for eg 3 years or more. Though they will probably have no idea whether person A is having a bad day or week for example.

kittylester Thu 29-Sept-16 17:16:58

soop, exactly!

NanKate Thu 29-Sept-16 17:15:37

What is 'virtue signalling' ?

GG22 Thu 29-Sept-16 17:09:49

IMHO it is quite shocking that the police state is alive and well on GN. As uber grown ups isn't it up to us to police ourselves and simply move on when we don't like how a thread is going? Guess we have to sit quietly in our corners as we grow old... and senile....

Anyhoo, happiest of birthday to Jings where'er ye may be. You are missed already. cupcakewineflowers

Perhaps some of like speculation, DahneB. You don't have to join in...smile

soop Thu 29-Sept-16 17:04:03

As I usually stay in the kitchen (I know my place)wink I have no idea why it is that jings has been barred, or whatever.
Jings and I have had our moments. However, whenever our exchanges have become heated, we've expressed our dismay/misgivings with each other. Exchanged apologies have resolved our differences. It's what "grown-ups" with any sense do. Just saying...

Alima Thu 29-Sept-16 17:03:55

I know, I've got a headache now! Teach me to read a post addressed to someone else.

DaphneBroon Thu 29-Sept-16 17:03:00

Sorry, I meant the Original Post on the "other thread" -oh dear, that makes this a thread about a thread [hnn]

DaphneBroon Thu 29-Sept-16 17:01:49

May I just add that everybody is assuming this is a result of somebody reporting a post. Is it possible that GNHQ arrived at a conclusion themselves (see OP)?
In any case reverting to my Chinese Whispers observation , speculation is futile unless the facts are made public. To *ASSUME" is said to "make an ASS of U and ME"

Maggiemaybe Thu 29-Sept-16 17:01:12

And a wee bit confusing....

Maggiemaybe Thu 29-Sept-16 17:00:45

Gosh, this is intriguing! grin

merlotgran Thu 29-Sept-16 16:49:31

Obieone May I jog your memory?

Person A says something on a thread that Person B objects to. Rather than voice an opinion, Person B then involves Person C hoping that Person C will contact person A on Person B's behalf and influence Person A's future postings.

Person C refused.

Ring any bells? hmm

janeainsworth Thu 29-Sept-16 16:31:09

Person B is entitled to think what they like about Person A, but they would be wrong to attack Person A on the forum. The right thing to do would be to explain why they thought Person A's idea was offensive.
Person B knows nothing about Person A, other than that they have posted an idea which person B finds offensive.
Persons C and D may not find the idea offensive st all.

obieone Thu 29-Sept-16 16:25:28

Person A has an offensive idea.
Person A says the offensive idea on the internet.

Person B is perfectly at liberty to think what they will of person A are they not, based on the offensive idea?

Penstemmon Thu 29-Sept-16 16:11:31

I think that you are agreeing with my points thatbags I try not to make things personal nor to take things personally.

I agree obione with the fact that core values/beliefs are a part of what makes me me and if someone I cared about in RL argued against them I might get really angry/upset. However on an online forum , where I have no real personal connection to posters, I find I have been able to take a deep breath and distance myself from comments that have been aimed more personally at me rather than my opinions. I know that some people will find that harder to do and get upset or others get huffy and defensive.
Without the addition of body language/tone of voice it is more difficult to get nuances in some posts.

janeainsworth Thu 29-Sept-16 16:10:07

Obie people can certainly be held accountable for their actions, but they can think what they like.
That is nothing to do with saying an idea, rather than a person, is rubbish.
To give you an example, you might suggest that all Gransnetters should mark the winter solstice by going for a swim in the sea.
I might say what a rubbish idea.
I'm criticising your idea, not you as a person.
You though, are still entitled to your opinion that it's a good idea, and you're equally entitled to go for a swim on December 21st.
Should you get into difficulties because of your action in going in the sea on a very cold day and need to be rescued, others might hold you to account to explain why you took the action you did.
And I'm entitled to think you're bonkers grin

kittylester Thu 29-Sept-16 16:01:19

Well said bags and * merlot*. It's a form of bullying to keep reporting people for supposed slights. And where are the culprits now? Hq seem to delete as a reaction rather than keeping an overview and making up their own minds which plays into the hands of the bullies.

millymouge Thu 29-Sept-16 15:47:46

A belated Happy Birthday jings. Will you be back soon?

BBbevan Thu 29-Sept-16 15:45:15

Well saidthatbags

obieone Thu 29-Sept-16 15:37:51

Someone's thoughts and actions are not seperate from the person. They do not appear from outer space.

If a person chosses to post his or her thoughts online, they cannot deny ownership of them or the consequences of them in what happens.

hulahoop Thu 29-Sept-16 15:21:28

Hope you having a good birthday jings. I am relatively new compared to some of you I don't really understand why anyone would report others unless a really derogatory remark was made . I see some posts getting heated but that's what gransnet is there for isn't it !

granjura Thu 29-Sept-16 15:01:57

Flipping Nora - hardly been on GN lately as was on hols for nearly 3 weeks and chose to not take any internet device with me. Then had visitors last couple of days, and more arriving today - unbelievable ! ;) !!!

Jingl, Bon anniversaire from sunny Switzerland flowers x

Even when one has reasonably good antennae, one can't always know when someone is going to be upset by something one posts.

Sometimes, especially where a contentious subject is being discussed, people will be upset/hurt/outraged by whatever one says because they fundamentally disagree with one's premise. I know this is true regarding the difference between attacking an idea and attacking a person. Some people don't think there is any difference between the two; I do think there is a difference. I think that some posters think I am being offensive simply by arguing this, so essentially they are setting themselves up for being upset because they cannot or will not see another point of view as valid. It is possible to accept a point of view that one intensely dislikes and disagrees with without thinking the person holding it has anything against you personally.

Penstemmon Thu 29-Sept-16 13:06:01

It is hard to know people properly 'on-line' and people may or may not have 'good hearts' but if they do not have good antennae regarding vulnerable /over sensitive folk and choose to be blunt/brusque or flippant they will upset people..even unintentionally.

We are all responsible for our own actions and I find it odd when people attack/defend individuals at a personal rather than ideas and actions level.
