Shelley - though I doubt if he had ever experienced the kind of westerlies you get in your part of Scotland. I kind of miss them though. As a teenager I walked the dog along the shore in most weathers - when the wind was really strong, it pushed your breath back into you!

Will do, dear Bellanonna. The sea is looking lively. When the wind and sea become too fierce, the ferry services are disrupted. The longest power cut we've experienced, lasted almost a week. At that time it was caused by tremendously heavy snowfall. Not expecting snow just yet.

anno I like the quote. I can well imagine the breath being forced back into your lungs. There was an occasion in Campbeltown - (invariably windy) when we had to edge along the wall in order to enter the coffee shop. The sound of a mighty powerful wind is scary.
Last winter, the wind speed was confirmed to be 90+ mph. It roared like an express train going through a tunnel. Trees were uprooted between our home and the village and the power lines came down. The road beside the beach, was smothered in a soapy-like spume. Eeek!

Thank you all for your kind advice, I don't feel so bad now about taking a stand. Both DDs and DS have been talking to her about extra help and she does agree, trouble is then she forgets about it. Next week DD2 will only be there for real emergencies as she works full time and has a family, so I think that my assistance will be missed. What I would like would be for her to say that she feels she needs more help and then it would be accepted more easily. She can be a rather difficult with some people. I think that because DH and I are both fairly healthy and active, we both still drive and have our hobbies, she just doesn't think beyond that for us.
Hope no one will mind if I post on here about things as it does help.Gransnetters are very wise and supportive people.

Batten the hatches soop, hold onto anything you need to. Fingers crossed for your power. That sounds better milly, . We've electricians in residence so doubtlessly about to have our power interrupted! But at least they should be able to fix it . Will be so pleased when they have gone, we just need to dry the floor and plaster then we can start to make it all look better. I seem to have germs, currently blaming my flu jab, for want of anything else to blame. On well, nothing time won't fix. Take care everyone.

DaphneBroon I read your post and laughed, extra protein in the soup.I was also relieved to read it was a picnic table as it looks in the pic like a double bed, and was wondering what you and Mr Broon got up to in the garden.

I'm taking a break for a while the obesity thread is very upsetting, I am obese, never realise so many hated people like me in the way that is being posted.

Oh dear wobbly I did see this thread, but didn't comment on it so haven't really seen the replies.Thought the initial post ( poem) was a bit much though.Nobody hates you on here I hope, but it is a sensitive subject, and maybe not enough care was given to the feelings of anyone who is overweight.

I have avoided the obese passengers thread as I felt OP's"ode" was not half as funny or clever as she thought it was.
However I do remember sharing train seats with a humungously fat group of people once going to London - 4of them had taken up 4 sets of double seats with tables between them and as there were no other seats I stared pointedly at one of the half-empty seats and asked if it was free, squeezing myself in. They were all quite young and judging by their accents had travelled from the North West (Virgin West Coast Line) and judging by the empty burger bags, crisp packets etc etc had eaten their way down. I felt sad that they were so fat (and I mean really fat ) at such a young age, as it didn't leave any scope for "middle aged spread."

I apologise if that sounds judgemental, as I am far from sylph- like myself and I like to think the DGC like a cuddly granny!!

rosesarered I am so pleased that it is not only my eyesight taking a downward turn because I also thought that it was a double bed. I thought that it could not be in the garden and there must be some sort of covering for it, well hidden.

So sorry you have been hurt wobbly, somehow people find it easier to be thoughtless in an anonymous space such as this. Stick with us in the kitchen? Good wishes to you.

Hubby`s feed line was taken down today, also his saline drip. We`re still waiting to see someone about care packages for sending him home. I don`t mean to sound mean, although he thinks I am, when I say that I won`t be able to manage without help, having a disabled daughter at home as well, and I`m no spring chicken.

I'm not leaving. I have found the remarks on the obese thread to be personally offensive towards people like myself and my wife for being obese. When my wife is included in the offense, that's the last straw. You can't even object without it being called a "strop"

We have both been overweight all our adolescent and adult life (blame the situation just after the war and our parents for that)

If losing weight was as easy as some say, we would have done it years ago.

Had these remarks been about colour or creed they would not be allowed, so why should they be allowed about what is a physical disability to many.

Hooray - glad you're not leaving Wobbly. I like your point about children just after the war. When sweets came off ration we did all go a bit mad on sweets and our parents encouraged us. I used to buy sixpence worth of sweets every weak and my teeth are suffering now. We grew up on hearty food, suet puddings, big dinners with lots of potatoes etc., I used to go to the cake shop and buy lots of cakes for my dad who was disabled after the war and the cake shop lady always put in two extra cakes "for the little girl and her poor father.)

My dh was overweight until he got cancer (heartbreaking)Food for him was a great comfort.

Shall I start a new trend then for "sylvan bowers" - outdoors double beds under a grape vine canopy. You would just need to reach up and pluck a grape or two (I have black and white* ) and pop it in George Clooney's DH's mouth when you felt like a nibble?

I feel as you do WB . I too am obese ( although if anyone bothered to look at my plane diagram on that thread anyone over a size 12 encroaches on the next seat on a plane . I agree wholeheartedly that it is simply toooo easy for non overweight people to preach and boy do they !!

Obesity is the last 'ism' where it is acceptable to denigrate, humiliate and feel obligated to point out the persons faults and failings. You're right , if it was racism, sexism or ageism there would be an uproar !
