Mum/teenage daughter communications

Good advice to zandra, momb. Minibags, the teenager in the OP, told me she "hated" me when she was twelve. My reply was: "I know".

She's fifteen now and went on a family reunion holiday this summer. When I thanked her two aunts for looking after her, they said: "She was a delight".

When our DD and her family were eating with us last Boxing Day her elder two daughters were texting at the table.
When I was serving puddings I texted to ask what they wanted, carried on serving others, they suddenly looked up and asked if I'd texted them! Yep-don't mess with Grans!

I had to read it twice, thatbags but it did make me laugh.

My favourite use of commas is: Woman, without her man, is nothing. Whereas it should be Woman, without her, man is nothing.

faye 6th sense, eh? I used to often wake up moments before the front gate creaked (also at different times and sometimes twice in one early hours night if my two went to 2 different places). It would freak mine out if they bumped into me in the dark, as I was up anyway - making my way to the loo.

I thought you were white baggy, it just seemed that way. DD2 had a mobile at 17 (she is now 35) as she worked after school, we often texted each other if she was still in bed on the weekend. So different from her older brother and sister who are six and eight years older and mobile phones weren't really around much when they were teenagers. With them I seemed to have a sense of what was happening without texting. I would be in bed asleep and would wake up in the middle of the night (never the same time) and get up and switch the front light on so they could see to walk down our long sloping drive after a night out. They said it was creepy to be driving down the street towards our house and see our front light switch on.

There was an excellent book by Lynn Truss called Eats, Shoots and Leaves all about commas and other punctuation. I think it was first published over 10 years ago but I read/heard somewhere that it's been updated to include emoticons

Liz know exactly what you mean. DD1 having trouble with her DD, really pushing it. DD said to me "I wasn't like that was I Mum" didnt like to tell her what she was really like. Just said I was sure she would grow out of it in time and smiled quietly to myself. She's a lovely girl really just growing up

I love the idea of communicating via texts just wish that option had been available when my daughter was a teenager.

My nine year old GD has started to test the boundaries with her parents. She's fine with us though.
I went through hell at times with her mother and wouldn't want to go through that again.

It's not just teens. I sometimes communicate with 25 yr old son via texts when he's upstairs in his cave.

Splendid. Texts are always preferable to shouting through a closed door. Teenage daughters are awkward to deal with. A friend of mine, when being told that my daughter was 13 told me to lock her in a cupboard and not let her out until she was 17.

Isn't the thread title an oxymoron??
