Sometimes he just slips into my mind and I get a bit of a sad feeling, I suppose for the life that once was, if that makes sense. I am imagining him how he was (17 and gorgeous) and now he'll be in his 60s like me and I try and imagine what he'll look like..... anyone else have these daft thoughts.
Yes I do it was a wonderful magical time in my life but it would never have lasted.
absent what a beautiful analogy of the heart, and so wise.
I still see my first real love as we have a son together. We were married for 11 years before he left me for another, who he left for another, who he left for yet another and I think there's probably been at least one more. He's never remarried though as far as I know. We've met up when our son has needed us both, at each others' parents funerals and at our DGS birthday parties. I still care about him as a friend but both of us have been places and done things we would not have done if we'd stayed together.
I do so at times, he is a friend of a friend on fb, so now and again, i go and check his profile out. I m single, by the way.
How sad Sourcerer48
I think about my first love often, especially around this time of the year. You see, it was 12 years ago in August that he took his own life.
We met when I was 15 and had a very on off relationship for the next 5 years, as one does at that age.
He was sent off to fight in the bush war in Rhodesia which was where his problem with alcohol began.
I left the country and it was 25 years later that we met up again. Too late for us both by then - we were very different people, but we did remain good friends. It was me he called the night he shot himself - I had no idea at the time what it was he was planning and still wish there was something I could have done to help him.
So yes, I often think about that lovely innocent first love.
It was only through meeting her 40 years ago that I truly realised what it is to love. She was unhappy and I divorced. She couldn't make the break, though I waited seven years. Then some years later after we went our separate ways she was free.. but I was free no longer. We're still distantly in touch, she still makes my heart beat faster, and she feels the same though she has a partner. I suggested we meet briefly for lunch. I'd love to kiss her again just once, one last time.. but wisely she said she feared it would make her restless. Can't think of a better compliment for an old man of 70. But that said, I adore my Mme SS!
Yes, I never saw him again after we split up in 1965 and we both went our separate ways. I moved to a different part of the country. He came into my mind again recently and I wondered what had happened to him, so I googled him. He did have a very unusual name.
Imagine my shock when the first thing that came up on Google was his obituary
He had died a couple of weeks previously.
Such a shock such a coincidence..
In short - yes, probably far too much. I thought in Summer 1957 that such happiness surely couldn't last ...
well i always wonder.......... what he would like for dinner, so i wander down the garden to the shed to ask, we are never far from each other.
I saw mine the other week (we passed each other on a narrow pavement). I didn't recognise him for a minute or two as I hadn't seen him for about 10 years! He sort of said hello and we passed by with me thinking where did all his lovely black hair go? and he probably thinking where did all her lovely blonde locks go? Both of us are grey now.........oh well, I wish I'd asked him how he was and if life had treated him well. Nevermind - next time!
That's sad nettyandmasey? I sometimes wonder how they turned out but have no regrets have been very happy with my life ?
All the time - and even after 45 years on rare occasions when we go to the same reunions, we always seem to find each other across a crowded room so to speak - but hey ho better to have loved and lost they say
Yes I do. My parents hated him. I never worked out why. I still have what was, at the time, his prize possession. Bob Dylan's album Highway 61 Revisited. I was heartbroken when we broke up but married a much nicer man .
Yes ! we were just talking of getting engaged ...he had just bought a little old house to do up (or so I was told !) ..turned out the father of his ex girlfriend had bought the house for the two of them for when they got married ...and that since he had left his daughter, the father wanted the house back, or for my then boyfriend to buy it off him ! Coward that he was, he went back to the first girlfriend so he could keep the house. Married her. Had two children, left her ...looked him up on social media out of curiosity ...became a successful architect in a very pretty Suffolk village, now retired, with two grown up sons who have now taken over the company !! ......I never heard from him after the Saturday night in 1966 when he simply never turned up for our Saturday night date at the local hop !! ...tempis fugit !
Yes dear reader and I married him,he was a widower and I was in a failed marriage,we have been married for 19 years and no regrets ( yet ) ????
Well, it's actually a bit of a shock when you see what they look like now, mine hasn't worn very well.
I met my first love on the first day of primary school, we were nearly 5. We were inseparable but cruelly torn apart aged 7 when the local authority built a new primary school which I went to and he didn't!
I do think about the sweet chap I was engaged to when I was 21, he 23 - his mother was very possessive and determined to keep her only child at her beck and call, succeeded in breaking us up within a year. I hope he got away and had the happy life he deserved, he was a lovely guy.
Yes occasionally - haven't seen him for over 40 years. I know he married and had no children + became a Headteacher. (I saw his mum a few years ago) I think I got the right one though!
Yes I do - surely most of us do. I was sixteen and we met on a youth hostelling holiday. We lived in different cities and wrote to each other for a few months. Then he found God ....... and sent me a 'Dear Joan' letter.
I did see him again, much later, as a contestant on fifteen to one!
I wrote a poem about him:
FIRST LOVE - SUMMER 1956
In the September I turned sixteen, I fell in love.
I was awkward, blushing and intense,
and you were beautiful, blond and godlike.
Lazy, we lay on a Cornish cliff top,
watching the sun grow on the horizon.
Your fingers, rough like new potato skins, tasted of the sea.
That night I smoked my first cigarette
and I soothed the burn with my first gin and tonic.
Next day we walked together holding hands.
You wheeled beside me to the crossroads.
We kissed, and promised to write.
I later married someone with the same surname, though not a very unusual one, and have had a wonderful life, but I don't think the wonder of first love ever goes away.
Yes every day. He was my first love and I met him when I was 14 and he was 15. We never went out and I was devastated when he got a girlfriend. Years went by and I was friends with his older sister. We both married and divorced but I was alone with three small children who would want me? He married again then I heard they had split. This time I spoke to his sister to see if he would get in touch. My dad died and I moved the day after his funeral. Two days later he rang and a week later we met. I discovered he had wanted to date me too but didn't think my dad would let me!! We had seven wonderful months together then he died in an accident on his way home. That was 20 years ago. Still single now and Still think and miss him every day.
I did think of him and did not see him for forty years then found out he died recently
Mmmm- a gorgeous Spaniard. Very passionate relationship- then he got called up for National Service & I came home & met & married someone else. I got a letter from him 3 years later & he was living quite close to me in England & wanted ' to make an honest woman of me' I was 6 months pregnant at the time! I wrote a nice letter back saying how nice it would have been but....
I wonder what he did next. He wasn't much taller than me though so I would have had a life in flat shoes. But he was gorgeous!
The older I get, the more I remember my first real love, who died in 1988. My first boyfriend was more like a brother and we fell out when I left my ex and bf told me I must go back to him because I was married in the eyes of the Church. I was really hurt because there were strong reasons for the marital breakdown and bf didn't want to know. Wish I could build bridges now, but sadly too late.
I still have mine on facebook - we chat occasionally, told me he would never settle down when he dumped me & promptly moved in ( withing a dew months) with the woman he is still with , but he has never married her & we are talking nearly 30 years so he still has that final commitment issue
I've just e mailed a happy birthday to my first love ! He's living in Bucharest now but I remembered his birthday today . Oh dear , maybe this 'can of worms' that was mentioned yesterday might open .
