DH has, it turns out, bought a large map of Mars as a birthday present for ur 8 year old GD. So far so good. But he has had it framed. I feel this is a misguided present on so many levels. The size, indestructibility, the safety aspect of a large framed picture in a very small bedroom, the need to keep it displayed so as not to hurt his feelings, the GD probably not having more that a fleeting interest in Mars, my DD having just moved into her very small and forever home and thrilled to decorate it with her own things etc etc

DH intends to present it to GD later today. I know it is not my problem but my instinct is intervene and suggest he ditch the frame no matter the cost, as it turns the map into a massive permanent obligation.

Oh it is Notanan because they are always used to their mothers, wives, sisters doing the card business Not a criticism just an observation

I agree BlueBelle none in my family have been good at buying presents or cards neither. When my dad was alive, I gave him presents for Christmas, Birthday and Father's Day but he only showed me a card he had bought that he would have given me but he liked the picture of the cat on it, so I told him to keep it. Other than the thought of that one card, nothing else. He was generous if I needed help with anything, but not on special occasions and he never did it when we were kids neither, my mother did it all. Same with ex husband, brother and my son. hmm

They're just the men in your lives, not "men" plural

My father was great at cards and gifts. My mother does em but often misses he mark (but you can see the logic of why she though that person would like that even if it wasn't quite right IYKWIM)

My grandmother just gave my parents money to buy us gifts to wrap and say they were from her, my grandfather gave us lovely quirkly little things..

Same for uncles, older male cousins etc..

some individuals are rubbish at cards, as many are men as women

I wasn't speaking for every man on the planet!

What is it with people on this website that they have to pick up on every little thing that is said and tear it to pieces? God, I am so fed up of it. Where is the support and care for fellow people? It's certainly changed these last few months. Nothing can be said without someone having a go.

I'm going to go and find a new website to be on if this carries on, life is worth so much more than keep reading such awful posts from people who can't seem to add positiveness to the conversation!

Very pedantic Notanan, lets turn it round, all the men in your life were great at giving cards and all the women rubbish
There we go all sorted

I would just let him get on with, it has obviously given him pleasure. My Gd loved space at that age, there are plenty of female scientists mad on space, who knows?
Don't burst his bubble.

I didn't say that, I have some great female gift givers in my life (my grandmother didn't happen to be one of them, even though she was female!), some great male ones.. it's got nothing to do with their sex and everything to do with whether they are nice thoughtful people.
