DH has, it turns out, bought a large map of Mars as a birthday present for ur 8 year old GD. So far so good. But he has had it framed. I feel this is a misguided present on so many levels. The size, indestructibility, the safety aspect of a large framed picture in a very small bedroom, the need to keep it displayed so as not to hurt his feelings, the GD probably not having more that a fleeting interest in Mars, my DD having just moved into her very small and forever home and thrilled to decorate it with her own things etc etc

DH intends to present it to GD later today. I know it is not my problem but my instinct is intervene and suggest he ditch the frame no matter the cost, as it turns the map into a massive permanent obligation.

Sorry again, I only have grandsons and so got the sex mixed up right at the start of this thread. But that should not matter in this situation, should it?

Lupin Wed 07-Sept-16 14:42:49

Good decision Thuberon. As I've been reading this thread that maxim about shooting the messenger has come to mind. I'd let him learn from his mistakes if, in fact, he's making any, and then pass on to him all the practical suggestions for salvaging the situation. You never know - she may love it. I hope she has a great birthday.

Her!! The child is a girl...

sarahellenwhitney Wed 07-Sept-16 14:30:20

At eight years of age allow the child some credit to make up his own mind what he feels about the present and what he wishes to do with it. What we think about someone else's present is not our business. Keep your thoughts how ever well meaning to yourself.

I usually check with my DIL before buying main gifts my 2 GDs...I've learned that it's best to do that ! Little odds&sods I get, but not bigger gifts.
It's still a surprise to the girls as my DIL would say nothing to them.
I sent them both a surprise yesterday directly from the supplier. They both phoned to say thank you....I know they like what I sent as I'd done it before. sunshine

Someone previously says 'ditch the frame' thats awful its not grannys present to tamper with
I think its fantastic that a bloke has been so thoughtful and had it all done by himself
For all granny knows he could have asked her if shed like it framed on the wall or in a poster stage
My grandkids in high school have been complemented on their geographical knowledge my granddaughter told me it was all down to the BIG map i d put on the wall of the bedroom they used when they stayed over
I think all you posters who are poking fun or thinking hes out of touch are being very harsh I say well done him and the little girl will hopefully get a lot out of lying looking at it

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 07-Sept-16 13:57:02

harrigran really? D S?! grin

SueDonim Wed 07-Sept-16 13:51:42

I think it's a nice gesture that grandfather had considered his granddaughter's interest, although 3.5sq ft is big! I'm not sure my walls could take that weight. grin

I'd say nothing then later, if GD gets fed up of it, it could be presented to her school for everyone to enjoy. wink

notanan Wed 07-Sept-16 13:38:48

I agree with you

It's awkward having to dig out framed gifts to put up when people visit because you don't really enjoy looking at them every day..

a poster is cool, posters are temporary and replacable, DDs like posters and they're a nice way to indulge their current fad without a whole decor change cause they can come down then the next fad comes along

but in a frame the implication is that it has to be permenant

pollyperkins Wed 07-Sept-16 13:37:43

Let us know how it goes down. I'm imagining the expression on your daughter's face! Hope she and GD like it.

thuberon Wed 07-Sept-16 13:33:30

He has been and picked it up from the framers and I can now see it is 3 and a half feet square. Bigger than I had imagined! So much so I think it speaks for itself. Thanks for all the input here. I am going to say absolutely Zilch.

hulahoop Wed 07-Sept-16 13:24:06

My first thought was what a thoughtful grandad I feel he as thought about this she can always take it out of frame if she wants to laminate it my granddaughters cherish anything grandad gives them enjoy her birthday x

pollyperkins Wed 07-Sept-16 12:56:41

I agree with Elegran - leave it as it is and see what happens. She may be thrilled. If D says it's too big, you can then offer to take it out of frame and laminate it. But wait and see!! Don't spoil his gesture!

harrigran Wed 07-Sept-16 12:45:16

Let him gift the gift, children are very perceptive, she will not mention her likes again if he has got it wrong. My GD always comes to me if she wants something in particular, she knows I will get it and it will be the right colour and so on.
DH has never really had input on gifts, I tell him what we are buying and he gets the wallet out ?

harrigran Wed 07-Sept-16 12:38:38

There is nothing wrong with MLP jingl, it is not just a kids'cartoon, it makes statements. 40 something DS turned up on Sunday wearing a MLP T shirt ☺

Lewlew Wed 07-Sept-16 12:35:19

Nice unusual pressie... well done to granddad. But I agree with Anno, get it laminated. It will last, it can be transported, it can be put on the floor and played with. Much more versatile.

I work in large format document graphic design, trade-show posters, etc that go in those cassette stands. But many are just put on the walls of the booths and get tatty. We often laminate these and then they can be reused as they travel around. Go to a place that does large format printing, they usually have laminating kit.

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 07-Sept-16 12:08:10

I 'ate those toys with a vengeance. Good job I've got grandsons only.

Eloethan Wed 07-Sept-16 12:06:55

jingle Your "my sodding little pony" did make me laugh.

Elegran Wed 07-Sept-16 12:06:23

grin was to jings

Elegran Wed 07-Sept-16 12:05:54

Here is a grandad who actually thinks for himself and does something about a birthday! Don't tell him he has got it all wrong again and discourage him from doing it again. Granddaughter won't be displeased - he is sharing an enthusiam with her.

Elegran Wed 07-Sept-16 12:05:32

grin

Elrel Wed 07-Sept-16 12:04:41

Let him give it, leave it to GD to react to, to DD to consider safety of large glass frame.

Is the map laminated? What is the actual size?
Good for DH for thinking of an original present!
Not really your worry, what are you giving GD yourself?

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 07-Sept-16 11:54:29

I wouldn't feel miffed. I'd be flippin' amazed.

jinglbellsfrocks Wed 07-Sept-16 11:53:28

Sorry. Sometimes I get cwoss. blush

Elegran Wed 07-Sept-16 11:47:32

So many people want to edit what Grandad is giving his granddaughter for her birthday! There is absolutely nothing wrong with letting him get on with it in his own way. If it is not the perfect gift that it might have been if all these grannies had organised it - so what?

The transaction - the relationship - is between grandad and granddaugher. How would the grannies feel in grandad stepped in to alter what they had planned and organised as a present for someone? Pretty miffed?
