A comment from Gagagran on another post got me thinking about taste changes during pregnancy. I can't remember having any cravings but I did go right off alcohol (only for the duration lol wine hic!) and stopped biting my nails, forever.

I was so proud of my new talons I painted them a bright orange. At the first checkup I had with the GP he told me off as he wanted to see the nails to gauge my calcium levels!

It was the smell of carpets with me - and also creosote - I would walk to work a particular way where the fencing smelled particularly strong! With my second son it was ice cubes - I devoured tons of the things and would sit on a night with a glassful chinking away with a spoon. Strangely I still love ice lollies and generally eat one every day - as I can't taste them it's the texture I love.

My mum said she ate coal when she was pregnant with me.
I craved Chinese fried rice early on in pregnancy and the last 2 weeks it was Lion Bars.I was in hospital and practically mugged my husband every time he visited for the Lion Bar!

Couldn't eat anything at all except scrambled eggs and dry toast in the first three months of pregnancy. Beverages limited to water and occasional fizzy, glucose drinks. Lost a stone in weight.

Also took against dill; it really turned my stomach more than anything else. This was unfortunate, as I woke up to the smell of it in the herb bed outside my window every summer morning. Had to expunge it from the garden. Still won't eat it forty years on!

Food - lots of it - anything! I just couldn't get enough. I was a total embarrassment to my husband when eating out with friends.

Early on in my pregnancy, I had a vile metallic taste in my mouth which put me off all sorts of food and drink. Later on I was a great fan of anything pickled.?

My mother used to eat coal and tar when she was expecting me during the war, fortunately I craved neither.

Blinko Mon 29-Aug-16 19:14:39

Oh, and the smell of bitumen.

Blinko Mon 29-Aug-16 19:13:50

Peaches or nectarines with the first pregnancy; bacon and eggs with the second. I used to get up in the middle of the night, go down and cook bacon and eggs at 2am. All hours of the day and night. Very strange.

Granny Smith apples and yoghurts. First shopping trip after birth husband went to buy Granny Smiths and I looked horrified don't remember eating them since. Still like yoghurts but not in those quantities.
Interesting what gravingd people have.

Just read through the latest posts and what a weird bunch we females are when pregnant smile

Mind you, I might try Grandelly54's friend's Marmite and banana sandwiches - they do sound delish grin

I had a friend who loved the smell of a 2-stroke petrol engine, particularly that of her BSA Bantam. Being pregnant relieved her of that craving, thank goodness!!

I was SO sick for three months I hardly ate anything ! Then I got a craving for tea which I loathe and went right off coffee which I love. Strange.

Grandelly54 Mon 29-Aug-16 17:30:17

I loved the smell of coal when I was pregnant with my son, fortunately for me we had a flat in Dalston that overlooked the railway and a coal yard!! A friend of mine used to eat Marmite and banana sandwiches with her first pregnancy. All weird and wonderful stuff. Still love the smell of coal and tar.

No cravings with any of three. Possibly grapes with No. 2 = the people in the market in Jersey where we lived at the time joked that I was going to give birth to a bunch of grapes...

I did go off many things - the worst that still stay with me to this day are cauliflowers and Lenor fabric conditioner; still feel queasy when i smell them 34 years later.

starlily106 Mon 29-Aug-16 17:24:18

I also went off tea.

starlily106 Mon 29-Aug-16 17:23:24

My sister in law ate coal, and also blotting paper. I ate 2 large green apples every day, then changed suddenly to orange peel. I wouldn't eat the oranges, just the peel. And now 53 years later I still eat it.

goose1964 Mon 29-Aug-16 17:09:55

DD is currently pregnant and off everything, reminds me of mu 3rd pregnancy (hers) DD2 I craved oranges ,DS1 made me throw up with booze

Battersea1971 Mon 29-Aug-16 16:54:57

No, I never had any cravings. But did go off tea and coffee the smell of either made me feel sick.

Bijou Mon 29-Aug-16 16:53:36

With the first, fresh peaches, which were expensive and difficult to get just after the war. With the second it was watercress sandwiches.

nanaK54 Mon 29-Aug-16 16:42:49

Tomatoes by the pound and completely went off tea - funny that others have said the same

judypark Mon 29-Aug-16 15:00:13

With DD no 1 I was a sniffer, used to visit our local market daily and sniff gratefruits, also sniffed 4711 cologne, I had a tiny bottle on my desk at work and I would inhale it several times an hour, as part of my leaving present my colleagues bought me a huge box of the stuff, as soon as DD was born I couldn't stand it.

Sheilasue Mon 29-Aug-16 14:53:09

Loved the smell of coal but couldn't eat it. Couldn't drink coffee only tea.

lizzypopbottle Mon 29-Aug-16 13:31:11

First time it was oranges. My dear mother-in-law brought oranges the day after the birth and I had no desire for them at all. I had a frozen shoulder for most of that pregnancy and had to swap sides of the bed but it disappeared as soon as my son was born.

Second time it was green apples (granny smith) and soda water. At about 36 weeks, taking the bottles back to the co-op in Whaley Bridge, with a toddler in tow, I dropped my car keys down a grid. A kind person took us home and I reported the keys to the council. About an hour later, a handsome fireman called at the door with a set of keys. "Are these yours?" he asked. They were the wrong keys! Turned out they were his keys and he gave me mine after enjoying his joke ?. After my daughter was born, I didn't want apples or soda water.

Third time, I had no cravings at all but I was anaemic. Back in the early 80s, they put you on iron as soon as pregnancy was confirmed but by the time no.3 was on the way, they'd stopped doing that.

Zengran Mon 29-Aug-16 12:36:08

I craved fruit with the first two pregnancies. They both turned out to be boys. Third pregnacy, a girl, those dark chocolate bars that had pink coconut in, think they were called Ruffle bars. I never had a sweet tooth before that, unfortunately it never left!!

boheminan Mon 29-Aug-16 12:10:00

Redheadcat I reckon you're right about the anaemia theory. I was (still am) vegetarian and during pregnancy craved coal. I was eventually prescribed folic acid.
