Watching the Olympics ( I try not to but Grampy was watching this afternoon) and can't help but notice the number of female athletes that have no breasts at all.

Now it's not something I do in general ( look at other women's breasts) and I realise these women are athletes but I wondered whether only flat chested women become athletes OR is there something in the training that affects the shape of female athletes.

As a well endowed woman I have always maintained women with significant breasts shouldn't run, it's uncomfortable and in my case I could either end up blacking my eyes or worse knocking out a spectator.smile

So, does anyone know is it science, genetics or something else ?

I have always supposed that different body types suit different sports. If you weren't lean you wouldn't be able to run far. Breasts do get in the way, my excuse for not being sporty.

I used to ride alot, and have hardly any Bum, and not big breasts either. Wouldn't describe myself as athletic though. I wonder if i biked alot would I get that very toned figure of the ladies in the olympics, or would I simply collapse smile

I've never had boobs at all until I put on weight all over.

Many of those athletes look like men, especially the distance athletes. I thought I was watching the men's cycling road race again, but it was the women's, looking exactly the same in physique terms.

I saw the women's walk in London (IRL) and the athletes are tiny, with no fat. They could've been men or women.

Also, most of those athletes will not have given birth. I'm sure giving birth does something to the female body.

My childless friends are flat as pancakes. And very slimenvy.

grin jings yes I did ride, but have never had anything in the way of bosoms!

However, even though it was the bane of my life in past times, I must say that the little that I have got seem to stay where they should be........ish.....

I always assumed it was something to do with hormones as women body builders have chests like men , no bust at all unless a boob job . Could it be that they produce more male hormones due to the excessive exercise so lose their female shape ? I am not being sexist just an observation !

There may be something in the horse riding theory too , they all seem to have ample bums .

jinglbellsfrocks Sat 20-Aug-16 21:56:07

There's that. shock

Indinana Sat 20-Aug-16 21:54:48

It might do jings - all that bouncing up and down on the horse could have shaken her boobies down into her bottom grin

jinglbellsfrocks Sat 20-Aug-16 21:41:57

Wouldn't account for the lack of boobs though....

jinglbellsfrocks Sat 20-Aug-16 21:41:29

Did you say on another thread, that you used to ride horses?

phoenix Sat 20-Aug-16 21:39:12

It is a bit like this

Please could someone explain why I have very small bosoms, but am rather over blessed I the bottom department?confusedblush

jinglbellsfrocks Sat 20-Aug-16 21:23:09

I think it could be the Lycra, as Bags said. Perhaps flattening their chests makes them more aerodynamic.

Deedaa Sat 20-Aug-16 21:11:23

In the old days of the Soviet Union their gymnasts were kept on a very restricted diet and had so little body fat that puberty was delayed - hence flat chests. Of course breasts are mainly fat so any athlete whose body fat ratio is low won't have much to spare for breasts.

Sports bras work by squashing.

Lillie Sat 20-Aug-16 19:28:26

While I agree it's probably due to intense physical ecercise burning any fat, I also think it's self selective. If you've got big boobs you're simply unlikely to become an Olympic athlete. It's the same for ballet dancers too. Many with big boobs are rejected at the audition.

Maybe those who excel at certain disciplines will be of a similar physique . When I first tuned into the women's triathlon I thought it was the men's (true)

GandTea Sat 20-Aug-16 19:10:29

This may also be something peculiar to the long distance event, most of the cyclists and marathon runners are like matchsticks.

GandTea Sat 20-Aug-16 18:50:19

In the name of science I have just been studying the Womens Hockey team, varied and attractive range of sizes 10/10. First time I have got to see the penalties, been driving most of the day. Nicola Adams has the perfect figure (I am not going to say otherwise)

NanaandGrampy Sat 20-Aug-16 18:31:10

That's the event that got me thinking BB !!

No bust, no bottom to speak of and no real waist definition.

Yes , I noticed the hockey girls were more womanly shaped as are the female golfers . Maybe it's just athletics, gymnastics etc ?

harrigran Sat 20-Aug-16 18:27:10

The low BMI would cause athletes to lose any fatty tissue. When I was in a gymnastics club we were all small and skinny and a lot later in menstruating.

tanith Sat 20-Aug-16 18:23:24

I think phoenix is right building muscle burns fat and breasts have plenty of fat. Although I'm sure I read somewhere that professional athletes have some kind of surgery to reduce their bust. Not our Olympians though as I think they still have to be amateur don't they?

BBbevan Sat 20-Aug-16 18:15:56

Funny you should say that NanaandGrampy We were watching the women's Triathlon this afternoon and both my DH and I commented on the lack of bosom. Did they never have much or have they disappeared under their armpits. Mine do grin

GandTea Sat 20-Aug-16 17:46:36

Never noticed. grin

However I think Dame Kelly Holmes said in an interview that she had become more curvy since she stopped training. I certainly have, in the wrong places though.

I also suspect many of the are just physically restrained.

phoenix Sat 20-Aug-16 17:46:22

BTW, speaking as someone with pracitally no very small bosoms, it hasn't actually made me an athlete sad

ninathenana Sat 20-Aug-16 17:45:00

I've often commented on this to H. Gymnasts seem particularly prone to the ironing board shape. I did notice some of the ladies hockey team are better endowed.
I've always assumed it was down to their training programme but just MHO
