How Long Have You Been On Gransnet?

I think I've been here from the beginning. I defected from The Other Side.

How many of you were around then and what memories do you have?

Gagagran I was apprehensive initially, but it was great to meet so many warm hearted Gransnetters. I thought I was mad flying into a strange city, staying in an AirB&B, and getting to grips with the transport in order to meet women I'd only met online. Yet through this, I feel I've made some good friendships. GN was smaller then though, and I think that helped. Why not give it a go!

Been with GN almost since the beginning.

I didn't join until Oct. 2013. I belong to a few forums and GN is by far the busiest and most interesting.I read Mumsnet too, but find it confusing, almost too many members.
I don't belong to Facebook.
Thankyou GN from me too.

Only a few weeks . I discovered this wonderful site when trawling the Internet looking for advice and decided to give it a go. I was overwhelmed with the number of supportive, knowledgeable and sincere posts which helped me through a difficult time . Although it is still ongoing I feel stronger knowing that so many amazing people are willing to post a few lines of advice and support.

Also have to say about great meetups in Norwich and a newly blossoming friendship in RL with a GN who has moved to same area as me...thankyou GN

I have been here from the beginning and it was one of the best decisions I made.
I have laughed and cried over some of the postings and highlights have been the meet ups.
I have had more support on here than from some friends and family especially when it came to my illness. One local Gran kept in touch by text when I was too poorly to be on the computer and several others have sent PMs, thanks to all who kept me sane smile flowers

I saw a bit about GN in the press when it first started and joined in June 2011 but have never been to any meet-ups and probably won't. I feel apprehensive about that for some reason. Somehow I don't want RL to intrude into my GN world.

Anyone else feel like that or am I just an oddity?

Anya Sun 07-Aug-16 09:54:04

Yes, since almost the beginning. I feel I know many of the long-term posters though I've only met 5 of you. Some days i post quite a bit and other days hardly at all.

There's so many more people on these days that it's opened up the forum more.

MargaretX Sun 07-Aug-16 09:52:03

Since the beginning. Living abroad it is now amazing what I know about my native country, information I have gained from being om Gransnet.I expect there are some of you who know a bit more about Germany from my posts.

It has been very positive. I'm not on any other Forum and my latest gem was the Reverse Washing for hair. Since the day I read it and tried it my hair has looked so much better.
Thx GN!
Not forgetting the politics......

Also only about a year. DD suggested it as an antidote to FB I think. It was about the time of the beaker on Mumsnet, we'd both had a disbelieving look and a ROFL.
I have met some great people on here and even some IRL. Frequently impressed by the help and support offered when a poster is in need.
I think of GN as a comparatively peaceful place compared with the sometimes frenetic MN! Good things do happen there too, of course but it is so busy.
???? and other good things to everyone!

I discovered it in 2013, when Saga Zone finished as an alternative forum.

Sometime in 2011. I am always amazed at how common some problems are as we get older and find it fascinating to see how our bodies age.

One thing I know and would like others who read our site to understand is that you cannot lump the elderly into one omorphous group. We are as different from each other and from the rest of the U.K. Population as everyone else in the uk and at different ages.

kittylester Sun 07-Aug-16 08:57:02

I saw something about Gransnet on TV around the time it started and thought I'd take a look. Like ga, it hadn't occurred to me that I'd like an online forum.

I, too, find it difficult to remember who said what unless it's a member from earlier on. But I love all the input apart from new people complaining about how things are.

GN generally is hugely supportive and fun.

Pittcity Sun 07-Aug-16 08:52:01

I joined at the launch of Gransnet Local in 2013 and edit two local sites.
I love joining in the less contentious threads and have been to meetups in Colchester, Norwich and Edinburgh. It feels like we are all old friends and are fabulously supportive of each other.

Several years but I had a gap. I have a look every day but don't post in everything - I treat this as you would a drop in coffee morning.

gettingonabit Sun 07-Aug-16 08:36:56

cherrytree if anything, I think it's MORE robust now than previously. And more varied, with more contributors posting on a wider range of topics, which is good. I didn't post at all for ages because for some reason my pesky tablet wouldn't load the site.

Yes, I remember that GNetter going missing and her body being found. So sad.

I also remember a poster with mental health problems getting lots of support, which I hope helped her.

It's good to know, sometimes, that you're not the only one having a problem with something, particularly something personal and age related, which you would be embarrassed to talk about in real life. It's fantastic to be able to laugh about malfunctioning body organs, creaking limbs and even worn-out other halves.

There's such a wealth of knowledge too. I'd never heard of vaginal atrophy before I came on here, or discussed the joys of the menopause in such great depth.

Great stuff.

June 2011, it seems so long ago now. There have been some hilarious times, especially the virtual parties. Many sad happenings for many of us and lots of support through difficult times.

grannyactivist Sun 07-Aug-16 01:08:34

I've been here from the beginning - I think my first post was on the 5th May, 2011. I had never even thought of joining an online community before, but I saw mention of Gransnet's launch in an online newspaper. It came at a time when I was dealing with the responsibility of supporting my daughter who had been widowed for a year, and my one year old grandson. I found a fiesty, humorous, supportive bunch of women with views on all sorts of topics. Some were acerbic, others full of warmth, many were knowledgeable about a wide range of subjects and some were full of common sense. One or two were (are) a fair mix of all the above!!!

I remember the Christmas conference call when I was very excited to hear bags talking. I flew, with another lovely gransnetter, up to Edinburgh for one of the early meet-ups and was wonderfully hosted by marmight, who had a different name then and had been fairly recently widowed. It was a joy to meet so many of the women I'd come to 'know' online.

I remember the worry we all felt when Greatnan went missing in the Alps and then the deep sadness when her body was found. There weren't so many of us posting then and it felt like a real blow to our community.

All my family know my Gransnet name and my presence on the site is often cause for a bit of good-natured banter, especially with my sons. Last year I became stressed when a gransnetter almost intruded into my real life at a very difficult time and some family members urged me to leave the site, but I took a short break instead.

I find it harder to keep up with people now because I have a very poor memory for 'who said what' and I can't remember so many names. I'm really glad that there are so many people joining now though because I think gransnet is a great 'virtual' community and deserves to grow and thrive.

It's been 2 yrs 5 months.
I visit every day. I think I should get out more. grin

Cherrytree59 Sat 06-Aug-16 23:29:52

One year
Hoping for many more!
Think I asked a similar question when I joined
The answer seemed to be along the lines of 'its not as Robust now as it used to be in the beginning!'! grin

Too effing long. Probably.
