I'm horrified at most of the things people used to eat ( margarine and ice cream made from fish oil, sweets full of harmful colours etc) and the clothes (shrunken woolies, school socks with elastic garters etc)
No doubt in the future our children and grandchildren will be just as horrified recalling the way they were brought up.

Ladies (usually elderly) going out in hat, coat, wraparound pinny and slippers.
Banging the telly when the horizontal or vertical hold "went".
Telephones with no dial. You just lifted the phone and the operator was there asking what number you wanted.
Where I live now we used to walk in the middle of the road with no fear of being run over because there was so little traffic. I wouldn't do it these days!
I'm so pleased to see that Aqua Manda is available again and Aqua Citra too. I wonder if they still smell the same as when Christopher Collins made them.
Horace Batchelor's infra draw method. K E Y N S H A M.

The cry of "it's raining" from one housewife, and then all the neighbours would come out and take in their washing.
Door to door salesman with a suitcase of stuff
Twink home perms
Ice-cream soda
'Disprin' which my parents always dissolved in orange squash and administered to me. It made the squash go fizzy and tasted vile.
'Californian Syrup of Figs' when you were a bit 'stubborn'
Mangle in the garden
Clothes on the line that were stiff as board on cold days
Lino
Gondola baskets
Tinned peaches with evaporated milk as a Sunday treat
Motorbikes and sidecars
Bags of broken biscuits from Woolworths
Phone boxes with press button A and B
Prefabs
Skipping games with a great long rope that included loads of people
Berni Inns

Lilyflower Treats became Minstrels, M&Ms are different.

As for white poo, I remember someone finding a white poo sitting at the bottom of our toilet at work once. There was someone who had pernicious anaemia and we reckoned it was hers ( is it not being able to absorb vitamin B?). Wonder if dogs used to suffer vitamin deficiencies and modern dogs'diets have improved things - if they were mainly fed on scraps in 'olden days'?!

Ink well moniter
Milk moniter
Wooden pens with nibs that crossed and had to be replaced.

Two buttered crackers to eat with my morning milk wrapped in grease proof paper

The white spot on the TV when you turned it off (it took a while to fade).
Birds pecking through the silver top on the milk on the doorstep and when frozen the milk top rising up above the bottle.
Quadrille perfume by Balenciaga.
Suspender belts and sitting on the button on the top of Mum's stockings when you sat on her lap.
Standing up in the front of the car, right up against the dashboard (and arguing with my brother as to whose turn it was to be in the front).
Loads and loads of birds in the garden when you put food out.
Having to use a fountain pen at school.
Proper satchels for school books.
Having your own desk in school to leave books in instead of having to carry everything around with you all day as today's children do.
2 shillings a week for my pocket money.
Gas operated fridge.

Ukecan, lovely little girl!!

gettingonabit Wed 27-Jul-16 18:14:57

Yes, apparently white dog poo was down to dogs eating lots of bones. I supposed the poo mind of ..calcifies?

Nowadays dogs don't eat bones so much and the poo is now collected up and placed in a bag.

Bellanonna Wed 27-Jul-16 18:06:23

What a happy little girl, Uke. She's gorgeous !

GandTea Wed 27-Jul-16 18:06:15

Rusty cars are rarely seen now, my 2 year old 1968 Ford needed welding.

UkeCan61 Wed 27-Jul-16 18:05:15

Before anyone says she's too near an electric socket - it was just for the photo as the light was best there ;-)

Bellanonna Wed 27-Jul-16 18:05:04

I always though white poo was excreted by white dogs. But then learnt thst it was because they ate tripe. Do they not still eat it?

UkeCan61 Wed 27-Jul-16 18:03:57

I put my baby granddaughter in the wicker laundry basket so she can sit up and play with her toys. I call her Chicken in a Basket! ?

Granny2016 Wed 27-Jul-16 18:03:20

Yes you can still get Tizer and it tastes the same.

My mum used to do a twilight shift at the factory ,screwing caps onto bottles of Tizer and Jusoda
Every Friday pay day ,she brought a bottle of each home with her.

She drank tea without milk and.sugar because of rationing habits. She rubbed her corns/ unions with a match box and used an odd cream called Zambuck with a funny smell.

We have milk delivered to the door in glass bottles ? but only three times a week.

School hats - ours were horrible. As for gymslips having to be worn above the knee, that would've seriously annoyed my mother! They were bought several sizes too big so we could grow into them and in school we had to kneel down to prove that they touched the floor. We'd be sent home if they were too short. It was mini-skirt era.

numberplease Wed 27-Jul-16 17:43:29

Flour in muslin bags, my mother washed them and we took them to school for hankies.
Yes, Granny2016, I had one of those ruched nylon swimsuits, my 3 girls had them as well.
Having your coal delivered and dropped off the lorry at the front gate, then all the family out with buckets and shovels, carting it round the back to the coal shed. Oh and the pieces of shale that we had to throw out of the coal, they went under the hedge to be used for hopscotch games.
I`m another with fond memories of Norman Hartnell`s In Love perfume.

starlily106 Wed 27-Jul-16 17:33:32

Thanks Polly. I was very young and always wondered what the buttons were for, asked mam, but she said she didn't know. I only wore ankle socks so I'm glad I didn't have to button them on to the bodice as it only came down to just below my waist.

Auntieflo Wed 27-Jul-16 17:33:02

Gas masks, air raid shelters, identity cards. Air raid sirens, blackout curtains, the odd bomb or two, queues for everything which women joined without knowing what they were queueing for. Thank goodness some things are gone.
