I have a very dear friend who is the kindest, most generous and all-round adorable man you could wish for. The only problem is that he is probably the noisiest eater (and drinker!) that I have ever met!
I know he is very fond of me, as I am of him, and he has suggested that we set up home together. I welcome this, and I love his company, but I know that if I have to sit at the table with him three times a day I shall probably lose my temper and say something rude, as the constant speed-eating, slurping, and loud swallowing noises will be just too much.
In other ways he's a real gentleman, with lovely manners, and I think his problems stem from his youth when he often went without food. That's another story in itself, so I won't go into it here.
I feel that for both our sakes, I should say something gently, when I'm not feeling irritated, but it's very difficult to do so diplomatically without offending my friend.
I am aware that I probably sound like a fussy and ungenerous person who is not worthy of such a good man, but this problem is a bit like snoring - it wears away at you and can disrupt an otherwise lovely relationship.
Any other Gransnetters afflicted by a similar problem, and what might be a good solution - apart from earplugs? grin

Oh dear. I can't suggest a solution but I can tell you that it is better to sort it out now and him be upset than to go ahead and move in and then leave him because you cannot stand it.
I speak from experience, my H of 58 years has started this, he also has lovely manners in every other way and this has been going on for about a year now. He drives me mad. He slurps and sniffs through meals and I do tell him but he has forgotten in 3 minutes as he forgets everything I say to him.
Get it sorted now. You will make excuses for eating out with friends or having people in for a meal. Please bite the bullet and do it.

All I can say is, if it irritates you now, it'll be a whole lot worse if you set up home together. An old boyfriend, back in the day, had long thin hairy fingers. I tried to ignore them, as the rest of him was quite nice. As time went by, all I could see were those horrid long hairy fingers! If your friend has been eating like that his whole life, it will be very difficult to change now. What a shame. You've either got to mention it, risking the end of the friendship. Or keep things as they are I suppose. But I wouldn't move in with him if this already gets to you. Have you tried dropping any hints? Maybe in a jokey way, like 'For god's sake ......, slow down, you'll get indigestion'.

Yes if it's a problem now things will only get worse, don't move in with him yet. Do you think you are having doubts and this is a way of expressing them ? I have lived alone and with a partner and think it's better to be happy alone than unhappy living with someone.

Oh breeze! That must have been awful! Table manners are possibly changeable, but long, thin, hairy fingers you're stuck with shock

If the man's eating habits are the only thing causing you to hesitate, I think you should tell him that clearly.
Make sure you tell him how much he is valued but that this one thing, which he could change, is upsetting to you and could cause difficulties later.
You could always ask if there's anything about you he'd like to change too!

Thanks everyone for your wise advice - I think I will risk mentioning the problem to my friend.
FarNorth - I could ask him if there's anything about me that he would like to change, but that would be pointless as I'm already perfect! grin
Seriously, that may be a good way to approach it - I may be getting on his nerves summat terrible, but he hasn't liked to say.
