Any genealogists out there?

Do you know where your grandfather was baptised? The Church should hold baptismal records,xand his date of birth would be recorded there. have a look at this . It might help.

Your grandfather's DOB will not be shown on your mother's birth certificate nor will it be shown on your grandparents marriage certificate as that will only show their ages at time of marriage.

His death certificate will state his age at time of death you can calculate his approximate year of birth.

I obtained most of the information for my family tree by searching statutory records and old parish records via Scotland's People and Ancestry.co.uk.

I would be of great help if you knew which parish he was born in as it would narrow the search, thereby throwing up fewer possible matches.

Thanks for that - I have no idea of the church, though I know the town (I think) , may have to start there. Would church records be online? Or just the official certificates?

Suzied Irish records can be more difficult and some were burnt in the Easter uprising. Are their any relatives of your parents generation left to talk to?

No! not his date of birth, you need to get your mothers birth certificate there is no alternative.It should show who the parents were and where they lived.
If they were in the UK it should have her name and parents name on it.

Ok born in Eire did he move to the UK if so where did he live?
You need to get both your parents marriage certs and work back from there.

I am just looking at the death cert of my dad's grandfather who died in 1936 born 1866.
It shows:
Date of death and address.
Age, employment
Cause of death.

Signature, and address of informant. All of which is very useful.

Your granddad is likely to be a generation younger than the one I have looked at so the information should be reasonably good.

As it looks like being a wet weekend you could PM what details you have and I will see where I can get to.

Statutory records became law in 1855, prior to that you will be relying solely on old parish registers, most of which are available to view online (at a small charge) from various genealogy sites. I'm thinking your grandfather will have been born after 1855, so it shouldn't be to difficult to trace his birth certificate.

Yes I think his date of birth would be 1897 or 8 which narrows it down. Thanks for all the info, as nellimoser says, it's a wet weekend task, bigger than I thought!
