Will you be awake to hear the referendum result?

I do tend to stay up for most elections. I even did it once when in hospital recovering from an operation, much to the nurses' amusement. My theory was, who sleeps properly in the night in hospital anyway, so when I woke up, I went into the "lounge" [some nurses also popped in from time to time too]to see how things were going.

I dont get why there is not going to be an exit poll?

I'm in Sorrento, having voted by post. At this moment in time, I don't give a damn either way!!!!

No definitely not it takes me all my time to get up at 6 am for work.

No I certainly won't be awake to hear the result. I value my sleep too much. And I know what the result's going to be anyway. It will be whatever David bloody Cameron wants it to be.

I don't intend to stay up but as I normally fall asleep with my radio on I may hear how the results are coming in otherwise I will wait until I get up. It will all depend on how well I sleep - most nights I sleep so heavily a bomb wouldn't wake me!!!!

I have already done my Postal Vote so no changing my mind on Polling Day (not that I would have done, my mind was made up early on & I have never wavered)

Sorry to appear dim, but how is the count being done? Is it by the actual number who voted, or by constituencies?

I will try to sleep and set my alarm for 7am. I am deeply worried by the austerity measures currently being rolled out and fearful of how much worse things may become if the Brexit vote wins the day. At the moment the voting seems fairly neck and neck.

No it will be time enough to hear the results in the morning.

Each constituency will do their own count, as in the general election. All the boxes are sealed and driven to a big sports hall where there are
lots of local authority employees working in teams with team leaders watching that they are doing it correctly. The political parties are invited to send in teams of scrutineers. I did this recently in the Welsh assembly elections. You can stand right behind those doing the count and watch that they are not making mistakes. Not allowed to chat to them. The county solicitor sits up the front making a judgement on any papers that are not filled in correctly - e.g. they have put a tick instead of a cross. She decides whether each one is valid or not. Then they collate all the votes into bundles of 100 and come up with a final score. All the welsh results will be submitted to a central count in Flint and then the total Welsh vote number will go to a central point - is it Manchester or did I dream that? Which is where the final result will be declared.

I will have my phone by the bed as an alarm. I will check when I wake up.

Will probably stay up all night- deliberately no TV in bedroom. We sleep American style- eg 2 s double beds side by side - the joys of an old house with very large rooms.

In the Scottish referendum, results were announced for each region and the grand totals also worked out as they went along.
Is that what's happening this time also?

I usually think I'm not going to stay up, then I do anyway, or I wake up in the early hours and put the radio on.

I will be working at the election which is a very long day so will be unlikely to be awake until morning. First thing will be to turn on the news.

Granjura - I don't give a damn "at this moment in time" as I'm on holiday! I've cast my vote, I'll see the result when I get up on Fri. Time enough.

Chap on TV said if you are keen - go to bed at 7pm, then wake at 3am

What I dont like[much] and I dont suppose the presenters do either, is when there is only 1 result, or 3, for about 2 hours, that have to be endlessly chewed over.

I dont know what they will do about graphics this time.
Divide them into areas that are young, older, North, South, rural, city?
They only have a Remain or Leave to play with.

It won't be very exciting Obelone because there won't be the analysis of "swing" etc They may announce constituencies but the voting patterns look like being so varied across the country it will be hard to predict until quite late into the process. At some stage there might be people with their calculators working out things like "whatever the remote areas of Scotland vote it is still going to be a win for >>>>>>"
If I was a praying woman I'd be down on my knees as I am convinced that given the wobbly state of our economy, with the £1.7 trillion debt (still growing rapidly since 2010) we are in no fit state to start going it alone in an uncertain world. If you are chugging along in a slightly shabby cross channel ferry, not exactly luxurious, but definitely seaworthy, with all its safety checks and certificates in place, it's not at all sensible to insist that you wish to transfer to a rather leaky lifeboat that has never actually been tried out.

Thnak you for the swing part. I agree. I like to try and envisage things sometimes. I could maybe see what the BBC and others have in store, assuming they have released details. But I also like surprises!

Looks as they I am practically on my own then.

I am interested to see the geographical votes, either boringly predictable or an eye opener.

I remain worried where my one little vote will go and I am anxious for the UK whichever we go. A dilemma up to the last second I put my cross.

To be honest, I feel quite sick and full of dread this morning- what with difficult family news.. I am feeling really awful, despite the lovely sunshine and bird song...

Sorry to hear that GJ , the bigger picture is worrying enough, but I do hope your family problems are resolved.

I'll stay up until I start to get bored fall asleep, then I'll log into GN in the morning for the results.

I don't really worry which way the vote goes as what will be will be and there will be wins and loses either way.
