I am planning a holiday of a difference around the UK, using a All line rover rail ticket for a week.
My plan is to Penzance 1st, then travel on the night sleeper , do a bit of a journey during the day2 then get the sleeper to Inverness , going up to Thurso ,and the Kyle of Locahaish, staying at a B & B in between, then sleeper to east Anglia, then finish in East and West Midlands.
Carry in rucksack, clothes plus medication.

I travel quite a lot. I put everything I think I will need in piles on the spare bed leave it for a day or so and then go back through each pile, taking things out and making a 'maybe' pile. I then pack/roll everything into the case. As happened last week, there was room for some stuff from the 'maybe' pile so I put it in and of course, I don't need it. We have so many choices these days, but really only require a minimal amount of stuff. As you say, most things are available to buy, and there are washing facilities even in the remotest of places! I always take vast amounts of 'wash bag' stuff but have now invested in small plastic bottles and jars which still return half full......

What sort of traveller are you? I find, as i have grown older that I tend to travel increasingly lighter. I used to carry everything but the kitchen sink when the DCs were young (before these appalling weight and size restrictions came in) and often found i came back with a really vast amount of stuff we had never used. I now find I am much more of the opinion that if i have forgotten something it will a) be easy to replace (speaking toothbrush or more socks) or b) can be done without.
I still spend far too much time on packing, ensuring i dont forget too many essentials, but end up with smaller and lighter cases (as long as my dear H does not get involved!)
