After last night's choking episode I have been looking round for first aid courses that DH and I can do together. We've both done them in the distant past but a refresher course would not go amiss. I can gain confidence with my cpr and DH can learn the Heimlich manoeuvre which he's never been taught. I'll feel a lot more secure!

That's great, just don't do what I did and call it the 'Hindlick'

I used to teach first aid. I was once asked to talk to a girl guide troop (are they called a troop ?). As part of their badge they had to prepare a first aid box that they could carry when out in the wilds.
I also prepared one to show them what I thought they needed to carry, surprise surprise, mine was empty.
My reason, everything that you need to save a life is about your person, plasters, tweezers etc, never saved a life. CPR, Heimlich manoeuvre, pressure, elevation, talking will and you need very little to apply these, just your hands and mouth.

So, yes, do a first aid course and learn tose simple things that can save life, even you own, as apart from CPR they can all be self administered.

Remember those Girl Guide ties that were supposed to double as a bandage/arm sling? I wanted to try this out on my patrol leader when she hurt her ankle but they wouldn't let me near her. Good job too as it turned out to be broken. G&T, I would like to carry a tube of antihistamine cream, remembering the time my younger son fell out of a tree into a bed of nettles. Aged three, wearing shorts. That cream saved a lot of misery - for his parents as well. Dock leaves are the folk remedy, though I never found that they worked.

Creams etc are no longer allowed in first aid boxes hmm

I do carry all sorts of stuff in the car, just in case, but I can't think of anything that is life threatening, that needs a first aid box.

I remember, when I first joined St. Johns we used to practise 99 things to do with a bandage !. All of course essential when trekking in the wilds of Patagonia, and liable to be inspected by a hospital matron, but I would prefer a mobile phone these days in the local park.

One very important thing I missed from my essential list was the recovery position.

My Oh carries a miniature bottle of brandy in his first aid kit.
