I don't want to start a third thread about the royals but I did feel rather annoyed to see a lot of them at Royal Ascot third afternoon drinking champagne and wearing outfits which individually cost more than I spend on clothes in a years. And they will all be wearing different outfits for each of the five days of the meeting.

Just to be helpful, a list of countries with elected presidents.
I expect everyone living in those countries has a high standard of living, there is no homelessness, no poverty and no food banks.

The President is great value for money, costs very little and everyone is as happy as can be.

As a pragmatist I think they are good value for money, a lot cheaper than a presidential system and I, for one, could not stand the months of build-up every four years before a presidential election and all the money thrown around and the cheering, jeering crowds. So unseemly, such a waste of money, and causing instability to the country as a whole.

It is bad enough having all the elections and all the layers of government that we do have without adding another elected layer in place of the monarch.

What do we know about the queen? Know , not what the PR machine releases , I know she loves dogs and horses, can stop a trial just by saying she remembered something but didn't have to appear in court to give this evidence , attends church every Sunday

I agree with you Ab and I haven't got a chip either. I believe the monarchy to be an expensive and outdated mediaeval institution. Why in a democracy should one family, by reason of birth, be elevated above everyone else? I would prefer to be a citizen rather than a subject. I know that this is not a popular view because the queen is well liked, but in an hereditary system the mad or bad may pop up in the future, as has happened in the past!

But you agreed with Jingle that I have a chip on my shoulder GrandTea, I found it offensive that you joined the ranks of mockers . Perhaps you would explain why feeling strongly about something equals having a chip on the shoulder ? Others have opinions different to mine , do they also bear a chip?
