Has life got serious? Is it the age I live in or the age I am? I just don't seem to have a lot of laughs or fun!!
Look at children running in the park, babies playing with a toy, puppies or kittens chasing their tails, listen to teenagers on the train and what they all seem to have in common is their joie de vivre.
The best I seem to get is a cup of tea and a shortbread biscuit at the garden centre with my friend (don't get me wrong, a dear friend and exceedingly good shortbread) but it doesn't exactly set the world on fire.
Comedians regularly fail to make me laugh, jokes fall flat.
Oh and it is RAINING AGAIN
AIBU???
hmm

Oh Nonnie1,I laughed and laughed about the cats in the loft and the missing chewing gum! That will turn up in the middle of the night attached to a sheet won't it, and it will have gone all tacky, or even better, on a guests sheet! Deep joy, thank you!

Magicmaggie Wed 01-Jun-16 21:58:46

I had a lovely experience of making a coach party laugh today.
We were just about to go through a very tight entrance to a stately home with our huge coach, when I shouted out "breath in everyone" and you know not only did they all laugh but I'm sure I heard a collective intake of breath as we passed through!

I prefer being older and enjoying more of life in a temperate, contented way rather than the ups and downs of youth where ecstasy was paid for by misery. I see the roller coaster of emotions my daughter lives in and the highs of the weeekend are always followed by the trough of doom on Monday morning. I think, 'Phew! Not me any more,' when I get the dreaded Monday misery call.

annodomini Wed 01-Jun-16 19:23:39

Nonnie1, I can't help speculating about when (or where) your gum will turn up. A guest in your spare bed might find it between his toes one night. I wonder if your cats have discovered your linen cupboard? I had a very crafty cat who would always find his way into the linen cupboard as soon as my back was turned - he looked so comfortable, lying, paws tucked under him, on top of a pile of nice warm towels, that I felt bad about turfing him out.

Just making the best of what I have (and I have plenty when I stop to think about it)and thinking about the many family members or friends who have not made it to my ripe old age (64) continues to give me the motivation to enjoy my life. Plenty to moan about, sure, but one hug from any of my grandchildren and I feel blessed.

Even if I didn't have five wonderful grandchildren, and two grown up children and spouses, how wonderful life is really, just to waken up and have no pressure or real health issues. Truly blessed and grateful.

My H and I have a group of friends we see regularly and always have lots of fun , roaring with laughter frequently. I also go to U3A French which is hilarious. We are reading Le Petit Nicolas which has us all in stitches!

WilmaKnickersfit Wed 01-Jun-16 15:31:51

Laughed at the loss of the chewing gum and wonder if we're long lost relatives? grin

That linen cupboard is exactly like the one we had in our first house when I moved from Scotland to England in my teens. I thought all double bayed semis had one like that in that spot. Never occurred to me that someone had built it there.

That's so sad Alea, we had a small BBQ on Sunday to celebrate my younger sister's birthday and we sat outside round a fire and sang folk songs, drank too much wine and laughed a lot - and stayed up far too late. I'm jealous that she's retired now and I'm not!
Next weekend we're hosting a larger party for family & friends to celebrate same birthday + 2 more in the family - and I know there'll be lots of laughs then too. We love that 3 generations party together and enjoy watching all the little ones playing together.
I know it's daft but I so wish my Mum & Dad could be here to see their 12 great grandchildren - and 2 more on the way too. I'll need a bigger house for our family Christmas gathering! wine

I had a really good ' burst out laughing' moment the other day with my oldest grandson. It was doubly previous as he is on the autistic spectrum and rarely sees the humour in a situation.
Passers-by were smiling too as we clutched each other and just fell about laughing.

Yes, it was a good feeling. Must do it more often grin

Have to confess to some good LOLs reading GN too smile

I do hope the MLP doesn't signify anything political, Louisa but you are right. One thing is that DH can't get to stuff any more and while I can and do sometimes go on my own or with friends I feel a bit sorry for him and know he doesn't cope too well. We used to laugh like drains at Fascinating Aida, Kit and the Widow etc but it simply isn't happening. I do not wish to say I am a total misery, as I enjoy a witty, good comedy, but the -spontaneity of a real fit of the giggles/good belly laugh is missing.
Ah well. smile

Anya Wed 01-Jun-16 13:20:41

Sounds like you are bored

LouiseMLP Wed 01-Jun-16 13:10:58

Alea in someway I think it's great that you've had this insight as it gives you chance to do something about it. Want more fun and laughter in your life then 1) sit down and think about what would give you more opportunities for joy and laughter joy.
and then 2) more important ( as you might not initially know what appeals to you ) ... go and find it where you live. New groups, new hobbies, reading humorous books or poetry , avoiding the news, make new friendships, go and volunteer .. whatever floats you boat. Just do something different and seize the moment :0)

Juggernaut Wed 01-Jun-16 12:01:43

DH and I must be very lucky, we laugh out loud many times a day.....of course it may be that we're just easily pleasedgrin
DH didn't have much of a sense of humour when I met him, but his parents had both had a sense of humour bypass, so that wasn't surprising!
However, I grew up in a family who could see something funny in almost everything, we were all arch gigglers, and after a few months DH had learned to laugh until he cried!!!
I suffer with clinical depression, often have to force myself out of bed in the morning, and sometimes just can't see any point to anything at all, but then something makes me laugh and I'm fine again!
I do think some folk lose a bit of humour as they age, I know my mum did, maybe things irritate us more as we get older........but I intend to laugh all the way, life's far too short to be taken seriouslygrin

NotSpaghetti Wed 01-Jun-16 11:53:01

We have some old friends who we meet far too infrequently but who are exactly on our wavelength. When we do get together we are in our 20s again and we all laugh like drains. We haven't seen them for six months, but last time we met it was in a pub and we were told to be quiet as we were spoiling everyone else's evening!
We always say 'we must do this again soon' and never do. I really miss them but we seem so busy these days.

It's hard to find people you connect with in this way. Who share your sense of humour, who understand you completely and with whom you are at liberty to say exactly what you think without having to qualify anything. We are a family who laugh a lot thankfully, but these deep belly laughs that make you weep are certainly not frequent enough.

WS87NT I thought you meant as you had drunk so much liquid you personally watered the borders - then I saw you had a water fight and thought eergh!! you didnt mean that did you? grin

dolphin Wed 01-Jun-16 11:01:31

Yes, HannahLoisLuke, that was an extremely funny scene but also I cried in the film, it was really sad in parts. Of course, laughing and crying are so often close emotions.
Since I became widowed I realise how much I miss speaking when at home - no gentle chat etc, although I do now have a rescue cat and I talk to him quite a lot and, of course, I talk to the radio frequently, especially I shout at Sarah Montague and John Humphreys when they wont let the interviewee talk!!
But, as an aside re the film florence Foster Jenkins, I hadn't realised before that Hugh Grant really is an excellent actor!

HannahLoisLuke Wed 01-Jun-16 10:08:49

I too have this feeling of no fun in life, in fact I think I've got low level depression which I've never had before. There are reasons for this so hope it will pass.
I did have a really good eye streaming laugh recently though when I went to see the film Florence Foster Jenkins. It was the scene where she's having singing lessons with the famous conductor. That scene alone was worth the ticket price.
Hope I cheer up soon!

WS87NT Wed 01-Jun-16 09:57:37

I had fun on Bank Holiday Monday, apparently it was our turn to host a family BBQ, I had no say in choices of food or anything!! So after one or two (maybe more) cans of Guinness I decided to water the borders. However the spray went slightly adrift and it ended up in a huge water fight, great fun for all and we are 4-68 years young!!

The heading for this thread on Gransnet Facebook is 'Has Life Gotten too Serious?'. Since when do we use 'gotten' GNHQ ? What is wrong with 'become'? shock

harrigran Tue 31-May-16 23:22:34

My youngest GD makes me laugh all the time, she is like a little old lady with some of the things she comes out with. Just lately my nails have grown quite long, DH doing all the housework, GD took a look at them and said " you'll need them clipping at bedtime " Reminded me of my mother saying it to me when I was six grin

Auntieflo Tue 31-May-16 23:00:16

Barstools indeed Nonnie1, and yes, why not two threads, airing cupboards , laughing, not laughing anjela.
