The answer to my question is yes I am sure it is !
I have just had a call from "The Ministry of Justice" so immediately went into my 'senile old woman mode'. He said that the government (!) were sending cheques out to people who had been charged wrongly by the banks. He knew my name and address and asked for my date of birth to confirm I was the right person. I suspect that he would have also been wanting my bank details but when I said I couldn't remember when I was born (pity I am so senile) he put the phone down.
I do not believe for one tiny moment that The Ministry of Justice would a) be ringing thousands of people up and b) sending cheques out !!

That's a new one. They're so inventive.

I've been getting official looking emails from PayPal asking me to log on through their link or they'll have to close my account. I've been forwarding them to PayPal.

At first I thought it was a one off but then I started to get reminder emails, each one worded to make me more and more likely to panic and click the link. They sent half a dozen emails before they finally gave up.

The MoJ would no way be handing money out! Trust me! I know! I work for them.

My spam box fills up all the time with dodgy messages - I delete the lot everytime.
I had my name and address used for a benefit claim and a spending spree in a shop, about 2 years ago. When my neighbour was reported for it - it mysteriously stopped. A few months ago my name and address was used to set up a NEXT account and I was only allerted by them sending me two weighty catalogues through the post. I then phoned up and they cancelled the account.

Online I had a serious of emails using offensive language pretending to be some kind of dating facility for casual sex - nasty, using phrases like - Would you like a lovely f**k etc. They gave up when there was no response.
Delete, delete, delete that is the answer.
