There are many expressions in English that make me chortle:
When someone says "Bear with me" I want to ask "Are you having a baby?"
Or to "I won't say no" I want to reply "You just did".
Or "May I have a word?" I want to stop them after one. Because it's always lots!
There's more but cant think of them right now ...
shysal - I learned the phrase from my Mum - I doubt she would have used it by that modern definition!!
Please tell me it's not only me! I would hate to think that I was using a phrase that no one else had ever heard!
Afternoon all.
Sorting through my drawers
and having a bit of a clear out, I found a ridiculous amount of (ahem) lingerie, which, sadly is very unlikely to be ever worn again.
I found myself saying to Mr P that I had more of a certain item than you could shake a stick at!
What an odd saying that is! Why should there be a finite number of things at which one can shake a stick? Plus, surely there are things at which shaking a stick would do no good at all.
I wonder how this phrase came about?
