For Australia, the First World War remains the costliest conflict in terms of deaths and casualties. From a population of fewer than five million, 416,809 men enlisted, of whom more than 60,000 were killed and 156,000 wounded, gassed, or taken prisoner.

There was a very interesting programme of Forces radio about the ANZAC forces yesterday. I was surprised how many men, in relation to the then population volunteered to join the forces, and how many sacrificed their lives.

Some of my relatives were at the dawn services for Anzac Day and some of us may have attended Gallipoli services in this country. I know this is rather late in the day, but for all those who have loved ones in Australia and New Zealand and for anyone in the UK or elsewhere who lost a relative at Gallipoli:

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
