Surely the toll is set by whichever party is in power when the prices are reviewed?

It's a long time since I've been on the tolled part of the M6, so long in fact that I don't even know if there is still a toll on it. I always though that tolls meant that the people who used a particular bit of road (or a bridge) helped pay for its upkeep if not for its construction.

Think I'll wander off googlewards and looke up other tolls in the UK.

Dartford is 2.50 each way.

There seem to be quite a lot of tolls charged on river and estuary crossings (bridges and tunnels), probably because they are very expensive to build and maintain.

I can remember the Severn Brudge being 50p each way - but as the toll is only one way it is half the price really as most people use it both ways.

So if the English want to visit Wales they have to pay, if the Welsh want to come home they have to pay

Naturally Caesan . Just that at this time we have a Tory government and I thought best to explain it was not the Senydd which sets the charges

So people who want to travel between England and Wales on that particular road in the England-Wales direction have to pay.

I think there are one way payments in other places as well and that it's not a let's be nasty to the Welsh plot.

No Toll charges on any of the bridges in Scotland now as the Scottish Government abolished them.

Is it more expensive to go by the Severn Bridge or to take a longer route that has no tolls? Just wondering. I guess it must save on time for some journeys, and possibly also on fuel and car wear and tear. In the long run, if one has to do the journey a lot I wonder if it works out cheaper or more expensive.

In her defence, ana, I could (even thought about it) have made it a bit clearer, like this: a let's-be-nasty-to-the-Welsh plot.

But that takes longer so I didn't. False economy, huh?

The post does NOT say Welsh plot, ab. Those two words are juxtaposed but as written they do NOT, repeat NOT mean or say Welsh plot, nor were they ever meant to.

There are people all round the world who think their country is the best and who would describe themselves as "patriotic".

Personally, I have no time for flag waving, celebrating St George's Day, St Patrick's Day or any other day that is set aside for a particular country. I'm not keen on great displays of supposed patriotism. I think there should be less boasting about who is the most patriotic, less flag waving and more actual doing. To my mind, it's just a matter of good manners and good sense to look after the place in which you live. In my view, this means being concerned about the state of the country as a whole and not just about what impacts on your own lives and families, your own part of the country, etc. etc.

I don't understand why some people are "proud" of being British. Being born in a country is just an accident of birth, not an achievement.

I don't know why some English people see themselves as victims of some sort of devious plot to prevent them from celebrating St George's Day (who's stopping them?) or saying that they are Christian (even though the Church of England holds a privileged position in our politcal system).

Who I would describe as a "Little Englander" is a person who thinks the world still revolves around the UK - and more particularly England - who is in a state of continual outrage about the supposed preferential treatment that everyone else is getting and who sees everything as a devious plot to undermine the "British way of life" .

Thank you for the clarification Anniebach, having a simplistic outlook on life I thought you were trying to lay the blame for the toll price purely at the feet of the Tories. Maybe it was me just imagining it?

And, of course, there are just as many Little Elsewheres-ers (and Elsewhat-ers; people who think they are discriminated against for various reasons, when actually they aren't) as there are Little Englanders. Both are signs of victim mentality and negativity towards those who don't share the same 'qualities' of nationality or group membership.
