After seeing last nights programme about keeping young I realised how unfit I am. They were asking people to cross legs at the ankles and then sit down on the floor without using their hands to balance. Angela Rippon at 71 managed it beautifully but alas when I tried I could only get half way.
I have resolved to alter my diet and take more exercise, but where do you start? I would love to do a dance class but would look very silly I know as would not be able to keep up and I expect wouldn`t last for long before I had to sit down! This morning I tried dancing to the radio and lasted about 3 mins. If anyone has any words of wisdom for me I would be grateful or is there anyone who would like to join me on a quest to eat and live better from a standing start.

It's given me an age of 74, which, considering I am 74 is fine by me. hmm

It is actually, a load of rubbish.

It's given me an age of 69 which is quite gratifying since I'm 75. However, I don't get enough exercise. I'd love to walk more than I do, but arthritis in my left foot is making it increasingly painful and I'm getting a bit concerned about my eleven year old hip replacement. Luckily I have to use the stairs a lot, because I don't have a downstairs loo. grin

I am sure vacuuming and gardening are counted as exercise, Nfk. I did the test too and came out at 14 years younger, although admitting to being a pessimist. I think the non-drinking or smoking and the daily exercise probably helped.
What is your real age? test

I am going to get out my Nintendo DS Brain training, haven't done it for a few years, I used to manage to come out as the optimum brain age of 20, doubt I shall do so now!

NfkDumpling Fri 15-Apr-16 07:22:47

After the programme DH and I both did the age test. I came out five years younger and he was eight years older. The only real difference in our answers was that he's a confirmed life long pessimist and I always see the positive and bright side.

There was also some debate between us as to what constitutes exercise. Is this just keep fit/dance/gym type work out - or does Hoovering and gardening count?

Ping Pong, Wiff Waff. Definitely! Where's the table?!

Penstemmon Thu 14-Apr-16 22:52:11

Anyone for table tennis??

The most interesting bit for me was the cross-section of the thigh, showing the shrinkage of the muscle within over the years. According to the programme, it is, in fact, possible to regenerate muscle growth. Which is good.

As for La Rippon, she has always looked ok to me, although never "young". And she must be fit as heck too.

She hasn't changed a bit. She seems to have one of those faces that don't age because they never looked young.

For me the big test is waking up in the morning, every one a milestone
Quite right pompa

Cath9 Sun 10-Apr-16 15:22:16

I did listen to the programme and maybe it is just me. I was able to get up and down cross legged, but as for playing tennis, I wouldn't have a chance as I am blind on my left side!

pollyperkins Sun 10-Apr-16 12:44:02

Tried the cross legged sitting down thing. Got most of the way but then flopped onto cushion. As for getting up from that position - no way! I'm 72 and try to keep fit by walking, swimming and aquafit which I agree is wonderful exercise for the 'more mature!' Also I enjoy line dancing which is not too difficult and you dont need a partner.

pompa Sun 10-Apr-16 11:59:57

JBF, not like you to take that lying down. Oh, sorry I forgot, if you lie down, you can't get up grin

jinglbellsfrocks Sun 10-Apr-16 11:49:29

I am duly chastised. blush grin

Gemmag Sun 10-Apr-16 11:36:49

Trister Just back from walking the dog which is the only real exercise I can do due to nerve damage in my back.
It's brave of AR to be seen on TV without her make up because she's a celebrity who is always seen on TV heavily made up. Personally I like a little eye liner!.
The 'sit and rise' exercise we were shown on the programme 'how to stay young' was to let you see how well you are aging. It is to do with balance and muscles.
There is some proof that dancing is the best way we can improve both.
This is not about how AR looks with or without make up or about her accent.
As someone who has had two Brain surgeries I am looking forward to next weeks programme.
I think AR is amazing for 71 and some people on here have made some very catty remarks, shame on them.

pompa Sun 10-Apr-16 11:02:18

That's unkind WOT, I was talking about MrsP.

pompa Sun 10-Apr-16 10:40:57

I used to look in the mirror in the morning, but for some unknown reason they have all cracked.

Granjen Sun 10-Apr-16 10:13:48

Do try a Zumba Gold dance class. It,s meant for more mature movers. We have great fun, none of us are great dancers but it doesn't matter. It is great excercise. My previous class used to do the dances to 60's music so great to gave a singalong too.

Anya Sun 10-Apr-16 10:05:10

Yes trisher for both those reasons.

granjura Sun 10-Apr-16 09:45:51

I nerver put a 'face on' apart from my own - must be braver than the brave then ;)

Jane10 Sun 10-Apr-16 09:42:42

I was very disheartened too. I'm hoping that I'll come out a bit better at next week's programme -maybe my brain will turn out to be in better working order than my body? I can but hope!

harrysgran Sun 10-Apr-16 09:31:37

I was very disheartened after watching it I'm not 60 and found it difficult to get down on the floor and had to use my arms and knees to get up I am a couple of stone overweight so it made me realize I've got to do something about it I broke my leg and foot two years ago put a lot of weight on and have never lost it my first thought when I saw AR makeup free reminded me of something my mother said once you hit 50 it's your face or your figure that's the choice.

trisher Sun 10-Apr-16 09:11:44

Gemmmag why is it 'brave' to let us see her without her face on? Because she's old? Because she's a celebrity? If the first then I am positively courageous because I didn't wear make up any day during my holiday last week. If its the celeb, she chooses to do it and gets paid to do it. If she is busy showing everyone how fit she is at her age I don't see why we can't discuss if she has aged as well in other areas. You can be fit but still not look good- which is interesting in itself.
The cross legged stand is a stunt not an exercise. A lot of it depends on the state of your bones and joints, arthritis and other problems often restrict mobility as we get older. I'd far rather hear about someone who is managing to maintain mobility in spite of these than see a celeb do some silly stunt.

Blinko Sun 10-Apr-16 09:01:47

I found that you can't do the floor thing if like me, you have a herniated disc which has affected spinal column and sciatic nerve. Even though that was years ago and no real discomfort nowadays there's a lameness that remains. so the floor exercise is pretty meaningless. Not for everyone, as others have remarked.

Judthepud2 Sun 10-Apr-16 08:44:19

grin pompa

I can heartily recommend getting a young dog, especially of the working spaniel variety! Since I got my pup (a working cocker spaniel), my fitness levels are rising daily. Plenty of fresh air and exercise. It's hard to tire my girl out!! I had lost half a stone.....but Easter and chocolate eggs have put it back on again. wink

Gemmag Sun 10-Apr-16 08:33:36

envy there's quite a bit of this on here!!!. Not very nice at your ages and should know better!. AR is an extremely fit woman as we all know so we can only try our best and if we don't succeed the first time then try try again. I for one thought she was very brave to let us all see her without her face on.
There's no need for the catty remarks and if you don't like the programme then don't watch it. Most people on here will keep on trying to get fitter and as long as we don't do ourselves any harm we'll keep on trying that x legged exercise.
Next weeks programme on the brain should be very interesting.
