So, what do you call things?

Don't like bog [ used that word at school though, we all did, to sound cool]
but never used the word lavatory either , or worse, lav!
In the North [generally speaking] a cake means a large cake, a small cake is a bun.Cue confusion when I met DH [ a soft Southerner] who I imagined had just scarfed a big cake.

I have a sitting room with sofas. And a dining room with linen napkins that come out when we have guests. Otherwise it's a bit of kitchen roll if needed.
And we go to the loo.

We have breakfast, lunch and dinner, though I don't often have breakfast, and lunch is a quick forage in the fridge - dh makes his own.

I am a southerner who wouldn't say 'tea' except as in cup of, or afternoon tea, I.e. cakes and sandwiches, which hardly anyone has any more. (Do they?). But I have northern friends who say 'tea' meaning evening meal, and it has never occurred to me that it's anything to object to - it's just different. Same as a northern friend referring to what I call 'fairy cakes' as 'buns'.

Should add that I had a mother who was very hot on U and non U! I was brought up to say 'lavatory' which I always thought was a horrible word somehow. Would prefer 'bog' any day.

I'm sure that's spelt wrongly. She said talking to herself again!

Just watching a documentary on Howard Hughes who was addicted to codeine. The old girl who used to but 25 every day must have been addicted. The pharmasist knew she bought them.

My Grandma use to end me to the chemist for Palmint. It was a pink medicine no smelled of mint. If you were lucky she gave out a spoonful

I loved Minadex and Nurse Harvey's Mixture. When I had a sore throat, my granny used to put Flowers of Sulphur on a spoon, and blow the stinky yellow powder down my throat. Child abuse, certainly!

We had to wrap all the condoms into little brown paper packages. There was one enormously fat lady who used to come in every week for a packet [of 3] Ha ha!

I did like mentholatum rub. Wish you could still buy that.

Oh I bought some of that a few weeks back! You had to mix it up into a gloop. No way could I swallow it. Chucked it out. Paid a fortune for it too from Amazon.Holland and Barrat do it cheaper, but they add sugar, which defeats the object.

And the stinky linament. I was always ill with [along with other things] bronchitis/asthma and used to have a kaolin poulitce on my bac kand front. Lovely and warm when they went on but all stiff and cold in the morning. Give me a liberty bodice any day

Scotts Emulsion was the pits. Mine always ended up in the disused bedroom fireplace.

Or somebodies Liver Pills. Or Dr. Collis Browns Mixture which contained opium. I used to work in a chemist and every day, this old lady used to come in for a bottle of 25 Codiene tabs.

How about Beachams Powders?

Fennings Fever Cure was manufactured by the devil to punish children. I swear my mother used it as an incentive to never ever be ill. In my nightmares I can taste it now. I doubt any ever got into my system as I would vomit at the first taste.
The other thing my mother used was something called Seidlitz powders? One of the very few occasions I argued with my mother who liked her own way and was used to getting it ,was when I was staying with my infant D and she wasn't well and mum put her coat on to go to the chemist to buy said powders and I said I would go home if she did. She gave in with bad grace but knew she was beaten.

Virol - yes loved it. I gave it to my children If I mention it now they retch. I was also given Scotts Emulsion. Thick, white , gloopy and fishy, after Measles. It had a fisherman on the label with an enormous cod on his back. Yuk!

Anyone else remember Fennings Fever Cure? Or Scotts Emulsion? It's a wonder our Mums didn't poison us with the stuff they dosed us with!
