Sugar Tax good or bad or does it cover enough food areas

I don't believe that taxing sugar will make one jot of difference to how much sugar is consumed.
We are now just at the top of the slippery slope and as the tax receipts start to come in the enthusiasm for arranging for ever more taxation will undoubtedly kick in. There is no such thing as beneficial taxation except to the exchequer.

What about the tax on tobacco syn? As an ex-smoker it was the rising cost that gave me the incentive to give up, as did many others I knew. And taxing sugary drinks lead to a big reduction in Mexico.

When people take the attitude that 'this won't do any good' which we've heard on many, many threads on GN (eg One You) I ask myself what would you have the government do?

There's a quote which goes something like 'if you do what you've always done you'll get what you always had'.
