My grandma had a friend called TD. It was many years ' til I realised it was Aunty Edie.We also had a family at school , the children called SX, KC and another I can't remember. These were not nicknames but their real names !!

I was named after an area being fought over in WW2. I have always liked my name, unusual then, and didn't meet another until my late teens. I've only ever met one older than me and she was named after a WW1 battleship which had sunk! Now we even have a tv show named after one of us. The name became better known after a certain ad for Luton Airport.

It seems my mother's first choice was Mary Rose but father's comment was 'Mary sat on a pin ...' She also liked Jane and went to register me still unsure whether to choose Jane or the name I got. She never really explained why Jane couldn't have been my second name. I didn't get one although mother herself had a second name which she liked.

All the time I was at school I only ever met one other girl with the same name as me. I don't mind my first name and I quite like my second name which is the feminine of DH's name. I never thought to ask mother why she picked my name, it was unusual for the 40s.

I always hated both my names, especially the middle one which was very unusual to give a child in the 50s. Oddly enough it has become quite popular again. The name was after my maternal grandmother who died 3 months before I was born.

My father wanted to call me Myfanwy. He wasn't even Welsh. ?

Nope. My name is the same as that "Too Pooped to Boop" character. Would have liked to have been named Elizabeth but would have settled for my middle name, Eleanor, being my first name. Too late in the game to change it I guess.

I don't think John has ever gone out of fashion - nor do I consider it to be 'ghastly'!

(and I have no children or grandchildren with that name...)

The old names which are fashionable now are from my grandparents' time, like Mabel or Walter. In time our ghastly mid-20th century names will come back, Ann, Susan, John, Eric. I hope I won't be around to welcome Carol, Maureen, Anthony or Noel to the family.
I loathe my first name.

Quite like mine although apparently it was a bit of an accident in registration. My Dad got first and second names muddled. I hadn't come across many others, certainly none in school, but then work dictated a job share with someone with the same name - we had fun - then when we moved I discovered two new neighbours have the same name. Easy to remember at least.

I loathe and detest my given name and always have. Which is why my username is Chloe.

I regarded my first name as the least of my problems, I was one of the few children in my class with a foreign surname and therefore spent most of my growing up years with the indignity of it being mispronounced, thus having attention drawn to myself which was most unwelcome. I'm actually quite ambivalent about my first name. I wish I had my third name however, Catherine, after my grandmother, I had that name lined up for a possible daughter, but unfortunately one didn't materialise, but happily I do have a granddaughter.

Elizabeth is my middle name but my father obviously preferred it and called me tizliz all his life. He died when I first had a computer and Internet and using it as my screen name seemed natural.

I quite like my first name, my Aunt chose it Andrea there not many of us around but I hate my middle name with a passion it was my Mum and Grandmas name Elizabeth, that's why my 2 don't have middle names

I don't mind my first name, but life as a child was a bit awkward as the dog next door had the same name. When one of us was called we would both come running!

My mother was Elfreda, which she hated, so called herself Betty.

I do like my christian name. For a long time, I was the only one I knew, and even though it was unusual then, I still had a nickname, adopted by my husband, so I shall never lose it now, and I will soon be 75. These days it is usual to hear it, but not overly so. My Gransnet name is not a variation of my name, but a borrowed one of my much loved Mum. Keep guessing!

numberplease, our youngest DGD (11 months) is called Lois. When we were first told I kept having to think of Superman's girlfriend's name to remind me. We are really used to her name now and love it. She couldn't be anyone but Lois!

Yes I do like my first name. I was named after my Mum's good friend. It has several shortened versions and most of them I like. There was only me with my name in my class. We did have five Susans. All very different girls so I do not think a name can define someone.
