Planned obsolescence!

Huh.

The French law only requires the manufacturer to state for how long spares will be available for an appliance, not how long the appliance will last.

What it doesn't seem to include is any control over what is charged for the spares. Too often the spares are available, but the cost of the spares plus the cost of fitting makes it cheaper to replace rather than repair.

It must have been worked out in France somehow?

I am not sure how this can be done because it all depends on how a machine is used. Taking the washing machine example, one machine will do one load a week, another 20. It will depend on where the machine is kept; nice warm kitchen or damp outhouse.

This will apply to any appliance. If the manufacturers have to give a formal design life, it will have to be hedged by so many conditions it will be virtually meaningless.

Quite agree. I have had to buy a new vacuum cleaner as Dyson no longer sell parts for the one I had. I am not sure how old it is but no more than 6/7 years. Works perfectly well except the bottom of the dust collector bucket has fallen out. Don't like my new one as much
