Is it fair, on this website...

..to tinge every celebratory day with sadness? Can't we just be allowed to be happy?

I'm all for sympathy for individuals when sad things happen in posters' lives, but why introduce misery to everything? hmm

janeainsworth Sat 05-Mar-16 18:29:02

Quite, FarNorth. The news on the telly best avoided too.

I don't understand the premise of the OP anyway, that Mothering Sunday is a day of celebration.

It isn't, IMHO. It's a day of remembrance and gratitude.

BBbevan Sat 05-Mar-16 18:26:20

Don't post anything you wouldn't say to someone's face . Anonymity is no excuse.Err on the side of kindness.

FarNorth Sat 05-Mar-16 17:49:49

Yes, it's fair.
No-one is pushing anything down your throat.

(Helpful hint, avoid newspapers. They are not all full of sunshine and giggles either.)

Thanks luckygirl grin

True thatbags

Jings choose your sport with care.

Luckygirl Sat 05-Mar-16 16:42:05

I know bags - that was what I was getting at!

Leticia Sat 05-Mar-16 16:40:41

I think that one of the best things about this site is that you have somewhere to go when you are feeling sad. No one is obliged to read it.
I don't think that anyone should be put off posting, bereavement is felt most keenly at what should be happy times.

thatbags Sat 05-Mar-16 16:35:15

I think jings likes a bit of palaver too, lucky wink

The only 'weapons' I use are words. If what I said feels like a metaphorical knife stab it's because there's some truth in it.

Luckygirl Sat 05-Mar-16 16:29:57

And jings - I think you know how to avoid a palaver! - but how very bored you would be!

Luckygirl Sat 05-Mar-16 16:28:28

It was on the bereavement thread - if you do not want to read anything sad (even though that is part of real life, just as happiness is) then don't open that thread. But certainly do not criticise someone for posting something sad on a thread that is clearly likely to contain some sad posts.

I admire your gracious response Imperfect - a medal is on its way to you!

Just wondering what darling daughter's reaction would be to demands for visits and home baked simmel cakes?
Don't want a visit anyway with this cough, cold and chest infection. The dgds would scoff the cake before it arrived!
Had a nice card and that's all I want.
It shows that she really understands her mother.
It states that at the end of a day ,all mother wanted was love, patience and A LARGE GLASS OF WINE!

Imperfect27 Sat 05-Mar-16 16:15:48

Tch - timing out as ever - my post crossed with yours Jings.

The games people play ... there I was feeling sorry that you were getting some flack ...

thatbags Sat 05-Mar-16 16:06:56

Haha, aggie grin. Right you are! Shows how much attention I pay to what day it is. Oops.

So what was the OP about then?

thatbags Sat 05-Mar-16 16:05:09

All said perfectly cheerfully too smile

It's fine if you think it's crap philosophy. Doesn't affect me one jot.

Happy whatevers day to all!

thatbags Sat 05-Mar-16 16:03:37

BTW, jings, I think some of your recent posts on this thread are disingenuous. As IF you didn't expect to provoke reactions by that OP hmm

Aye, right.

jinglbellsfrocks Sat 05-Mar-16 16:03:10

Thanks fffin.

aggie Sat 05-Mar-16 16:02:25

It isn't Mothers day anyway , tomorrow is Mothering Sunday , when we should all bake Simnel cakes and take them to our mothers , wearing our best apron and mob cap ................ sigh I am mostly cheerful , but today I have let the B.....s wear me down , just sidcovered a note behind the door , someone tried to deliver a parcel grrrrrrrrr , I was hanging out the aforementioned washing in the freezing wind , and now have to go out to the shop for the parcel ......... and get the washing in if someone will sit here for 5 incase he wakens

jinglbellsfrocks Sat 05-Mar-16 16:01:49

Oh! Isn't it nice to have the knives out again bags. Just like the old days. Much more like it. [rubs hands in happy anticipation of future interesting threads]

ffinnochio Sat 05-Mar-16 16:00:42

... and you have a good weekend too, J. sunshine

jinglbellsfrocks Sat 05-Mar-16 15:59:33

Especially when you say it to other people.

jinglbellsfrocks Sat 05-Mar-16 15:58:19

Crap philosophy. IMO.

thatbags Sat 05-Mar-16 15:58:12

And now I'm going to read a page or two about Sartre and de Beauvois on phenomenology.

Can't manage more than a page or two at once.

thatbags Sat 05-Mar-16 15:55:34

Actually, aggie, rightly or wrongly someone did say something about the bereavement forum at the start (well, the second post) of this thread. If my reaction to the OP (that's the Opening Post) is an over-reaction, then so be it. As jings said herself "it's what I think": life isn't fair; deal with it is at the basis of my life philosophy.

I'm generally a cheerful upbeat bugger, by the way, as well as forthright. I've had a lovely day today completely oblivious of the fact that it's Mother's Day until the OP of this thread reminded me.

Imperfect27 Sat 05-Mar-16 15:55:04

Thank you for the many kind comments here. However, l have been surprised and dismayed at the way this thread has unfolded. Merlotgran, you are right, l made the assumption that Jings was referring to my OP on the bereavement forum. I am sorry Jings if that was not the case. l have not known of your personal history. I can also see that if you are making an effort to be positive yourself, you can find it wearing when other people are down. More than anything l think this thread shows that we bring a wide variety of needs, wants and concerns to Gransnet. None of them are wrong. I asked for a bereavement forum to be set up when l first joined because l felt there could be a need for it and l think that is borne out. However, no-one has to read ANY posts on ANY forum . I am just sorry this has been a bone of contention today.
