If we all gave just one person a special day once a year what a different world we'd live in. I've decided to take a friend who's exhausted by her family out for lunch. Thank you Synonymous for your post as its spured me into action

It was very special and my DD is a delight and a blessing. Her big brother is too but lives even further away sadly. He is very thoughtful too but his main focus is on his own little family nowadays which is quite right. He phones me regularly and we often spend a very long time chatting and putting the world to rights.
I was so taken with a 'special day' that I thought it should be something passed on so I am taking an elderly friend out for lunch and a run in the car this week as a 'special day' for her. She says she is really looking forward to it so I hope my energy holds up! I shall enjoy it too so it is a two way thing and gives me something positive to focus on as well instead of 'lil ol' me'.
Perhaps others can think of someone who would love a 'special day'.

What a lovely thing for your daughter to have done! I'm sure that day will feel much more 'genuine' and memorable to you.
I feel really manipulated by the manufacturers and shops who stack the shelves with what are basically the same goods but in different coloured packaging according to the event they are promoting. So, chocs and toiletries in red, green and gold for Christmas, red for Valentine's Day, pink for Mothers, yellow for Easter and orange for Halloween. A bit more subtlety required to get me opening my purse!

Have you ever given someone a surprise special day?
Have you ever been given a totally unexpected special day just for you?
Well, I had no thoughts in my head about Mothering Sunday when we were with DD last weekend so I was very surprised to be awoken on Sunday morning with a cup of tea and then be given a card and present followed by a breakfast of poached eggs on toast. I said, "Oh, how lovely I can't remember when I last had breakfast in bed and I didn't even realise it was Mothering Sunday" so she laughed and told me,"This is my special Mothering Sunday for you". She also cooked us a lovely roast dinner with a lovely pudding and we all went out for a walk in the sunshine and just enjoyed being together.
It just underlined to me that to have our own surprise special day means far more than doing things on a particular day just because someone else says that is the day to do it. DD made it such a special and lovely day and I will remember it for a very long time. (DD lives miles away and we don't see enough of her although we often talk on the phone but you can't beat a real hug! )
I was so bowled over by such a lovely day and the thought behind it. It is good to be given lovely surprises and just as good to be able to give surprises so I am now going to be on the lookout for opportunities to do something special for someone else. It can be something really simple and would be a good thing to spread around.
