Overheard in Tesco

I went to three primary school and one secondary and loved them all. I'm an only child and I liked the company and making friends. I "bunked off" as we called it at Secondary school but it was all part of the fun.

I went to college as a mature student and really enjoyed it and later became a tutor in adult education.

I hated my time my time at a girl's grammar school. I was the kid from the council estate who didn't fit the model. I bunked off when I could ... Now I am a teacher!

My reports were never 'bad' as such, just said 'S could do better' 'S has the ability but will not use it'....
The fact I was a very lonely and insecure pupil was never recognised. When I said I was being bullied I was punished for lying because the girls involved were RC and I was C of E and therefore heading for Purgatory.

My mother was so determined that we'd grow up as 'young ladies' she sent us privately to a convent school. I was bullied for the whole 7 years, was frequently sick before school and regularly reminded just how much it was costing my parents.
They were the most miserable years of my life; I really can't remember anything good about it. If my report was bad then my mother would ask the Headmistress to 'talk' to me.....god, how that brings back awful memories...wishing I hadn't read this post now!

Junior school was infinitely better despite very strict teachers.

I went to three secondary schools. The first one - single sex - I suppose I could say I loved (though there were some lessons and some teachers I didn't like). The second one - a mixed school - I absolutely hated. The third - also single sex - I didn't much like either. What I liked most about the first and third schools were the friends I made, two of whom I'm still in touch with.

Deeda are we twins? Except for me it was the headmistress she had a go at.

I remember my mother shocking my form mistress at the Grammar school by telling her that school was all very well, but it got in the way of the stuff I was really interested in. How true that was!

We had chalk thrown at us by the Latin master who also taught cricket to the boys, and in extremis, the blackboard duster
I mentioned this to him at a school reunion and he looked very afraid

Infants and juniors were lovely for me, but from 11 years old my school was strict.
Ruler on knuckles, caning for girls as well as boys.
Fortunately I cannot remember how terrifying it was to be sent to see the Headmaster, but I know it was.
How things have changed.

I think it went downhill the day a teacher hit me round the head so hard my glasses flew off and in the afternoon my Mother burst into the classroom, grabbed him, and hit him round the head.
That was the last year of juniors. I hated all of them from then on.

I hated school, and really couldn`t understand the girls who were crying on the day they left, I couldn`t wait to go through those gates for the last time!

The worst thing about high school was the biology teacher (also our form mistress for two years). She was truly terrifying to the point where some of us had to go to the cloakroom to vomit from fear.

What a pity she was called Miss Reid, anno, there are some lovely books about a school teacher called Miss Read!!

N&G my DGD loves school too, but it seems so different today to my austere junior school.

The worst thing about my school was the endless lectures on sex (anti ) and religion ( strongly pro! )

I realise that I am a bit weird, but I absolutely LOVED school and cried the day I left. So I went back, part time, in my forties, for seven years.

Thats sad.

The 2 of my grandchildren that are old enough for school love it. So when does that change?

I can't say I disliked school, it was strict but no stricter than home and I enjoyed the learning. I went on to do 3 degrees through the course of my career and discovered a lifelong love of learning simply ...well for learning.

I hope our little ones keep on enjoying school.

It works both ways. Every INSET day we used to say school was great without the kids.

The worst thing about my school was Miss Reid. When it was cold she wore her fur coat in class but wouldn't let us have our coats on. When we were singing, she put her hand over my mouth and told me to stop droning. After Miss Reid, everything about that school was wonderful!

Well Gagagran, my answer to that would be "Good on you!" There's far more to school than the lessons, and our children remember nothing more than the school outings, the trips away, the sports fixtures, the swimming galas, the music concerts, the drama shows etc. and most of all the social aspect!

When I was about 6 I decided I hated school because it made my finger ache. Why on earth does your finger ache, said my Mum. Because I have to point/press under every letter when I'm reading! Is there anything you like about school Gally? Yes, Saturdays, Sundays, half terms and holidays. So there she had it and TBQH it didn't improve much until the day I left.
