I joined because I was a bit bored.
And wanted to learn more about being a granny.

It was recommended for by a friend for book suggestions. I slowly got drawn in and go on daily. Good fun, good info and advice. Nice to put forward views when no-one else around to voice them to.

Think my time on GN will be very much reduced once the spring and summer come as will be outside most of the time. But during winter months it's a good excuse to hunker down!

angie95, sunny today- but didn't move to sunny climes, but my native Swiss mountains (the Jura in the FRench speaking part, VERY close to the FRench border) which I left as a late teenager for 6 months in the UK- that lasted 40 years. Now both here (Brit OH and moi) in retirement- with very regular visits to UK for family and friends, and grandchildren, of course. We do have very clear marked seasons here, which I love.

I came over from Mumsnet. I see that people are posting on here about online etiquette and not reading the whole thread etc but it is nothing compared to the aggression on Mumsnet! I have asked questions on here but I wouldn't ask anything on Mumsnet unless it was something like a recommended oven cleaner!

My daughter was always commenting about
mumsnet. And I thought I wish there was a site like that for me.., then one day a thread came up for Gransnet so I joined straight away. And I very much enjoy it. flowers

angie95 Sat 06-Feb-16 09:51:10

Saw an article in the Sunday Times in May 2011 and joined soon after

Shestheone Sat 06-Feb-16 09:30:28

I googled all things Granny when I found out DD was pregnant - I was a little bit over excited wink

Found this site - and quickly became an addict! So much variety, both in topics and personalities.

There's also the sense that everything that defines us in RL (age, race, sex, etc, etc) is irrelevant on here. We're just people!

Marelli Sat 06-Feb-16 09:25:01

Read about it in a Sunday supplement, I think. It appealed to me because I thought it would give me an opportunity to 'meet' people from different walks of life. I joined a couple of months after it started out.
Been to lots of meet ups and have made some really good friends!

I can't remember how I arrived here,

cornergran Sat 06-Feb-16 01:22:40

Just a bit lonely and couldn't find anything locally to give a sense of connection. Looked for a space I could share with others with a common interest and found GN. A bit apprehensive with posting but so appreciate and benefit from the pool of knowledge here. Really pleased to be part of the community.

Eloethan Sat 06-Feb-16 01:21:17

I think I came upon it by accident. I looked at some of the threads - particularly news and politics - and thought it seemed interesting.

Sometimes I wish I hadn't though. It's a bit addictive and I'm wasting too much of my time on it.

italiangirl Sat 06-Feb-16 01:14:59

I found the site after feel I g left out of Xmas plans .gave me a sense of proportion on my own problems and have found so much good stuff and even helped me solve a make up problem pleased to be here.

Picked GN up via Twitter and followed. Got interested in the tweets coming from GNHQ and decided to join. Lurked a bit before posting. Really enjoy being part of an online community of people of a similar stage in life.

Must say I have learnt a lot: sad and happy stories, information, fun things, different perspectives, and have got to know some lovely people.

My daughter suggested it when I stopped wasting my time on Angry Birds and Candy Crush! I have seen some wonderful support and great advice on here. The Gransnetters I've met IRL are great too!

It's arrival coincided with my granddaughter's arrival and I wanted to talk to other grans...

baubles Fri 05-Feb-16 21:52:06

I first saw it mentioned it on mumsnet where I was looking at recommendations for buggies. I stuck my oar in on a thread about a Scottish meetup and ended up going along. I think that was summer 2012.

Galen Fri 05-Feb-16 21:49:23

Darling daughter suggested it when dgd was born

Deedaa Fri 05-Feb-16 21:04:07

I saw it mentioned in DH's computer magazine and has he lived to regret it grin

granjura Fri 05-Feb-16 20:53:14

Just seen your post Purpledaff - had no idea that tragedy encouraged you to join. Dark days indeed.

granjura Fri 05-Feb-16 20:52:09

Joined because I love moving where I do- I do miss the UK too, where I lived all my adult life and where my children and grand-children are, and so many relatives and friends. Very few expats where I live- so discussing UK life, politics and everyday life is not possible for me in real life.

Mind you, that is very difficult too- as any healthy comparison is read as a criticism - which is actually not the case at all. I'd really need 3 feet, as I have 1 on a daily basis in 3- each with a totally different political system, different infrastructure and legal, educational, etc, systems, different health service, etc, etc, etc. All3 with its inherent faults and advantages- and each considered as 'the norm and correct' by its inhabitants- who in all 3 regions resist any comparison or even consideration of other ways of doing things- be they better or worse.

Makes for an interesting life.... that is for sure.
