This may seem to many like a repeat of the 'internet manners' discussion that was aired recently, but I wanted to revisit the heart of this matter because of recent developments.

I recently raised a question about texting birth announcements on the AIBU forum recently and unwittingly provoked all sorts of reactions, incurring rudeness and insensitivity along the way. I am not posting here to carp about that, but to highlight it as illustrative of a wider problem.

I am relatively new to GN, but as a result of that thread I received several emails from people who are evidently upset about the way some GNetters post. I suspect there are even more who felt the same. Some are newly arrived, but say they have been put off posting full-stop. Some say they are leaving GN because they are genuinely dismayed at the levels of unkindness expressed and what seem to be pointedly negative / aggressive /insensitive comments. Sometimes when people have raised concern on the forums they feel they have been then publicly shot down in flames and it is usually suggested that they are too sensitive. Some people feel that others assume they are right no matter what and that they have an apparent right because they are longer term members.

I am not writing here to 'preach', or 'carp', or 'point the finger' - rather to think of solutions. none of us are saints and we are going to make errors and misread posts at times. Sometimes something is said 'tongue in cheek', but is taken as offensive. These sort of misunderstandings can be checked out and in my experience a PM often does the trick. However, like many who have emailed me, I honestly think some posts are an awful advert for this site and I really understand why others are put off.

Sometimes the problem may be that when a thread becomes very long it is tempting to skip and just add our own view. Sometimes what we discuss is indeed sensitive and emotive and we can find ourselves reacting strongly. I think it is a good idea to at least skim read other posts and to take time to consider views that may differ from our own and also to keep in mind that this is indeed a public forum.

Perhaps the litmus tests are
* would you actually say the same to someone's face?
* would you feel embarrassed if others actually knew who you were?
*would you mind your views being requoted in public?

Well, I have put my head above the parapet. I have done so because I genuinely like GN, but like others who have emailed me, I have been really dismayed at the way some posts develop and feel that at times we don't actually do ourselves any credit. I also think it is truly sad that a significant amount of people are evidently put off taking a full part in discussions.

I'd quite possibly have the same feelings after the birth of a grandchild myself in similat circumstances, but if I did I'd think I was the unreasonable one, not the new baby's parents.

So I told the poster that I thought, yes, she was being unreasonable.

I was not being nasty. I was simply telling the truth as I see it.

Which is what I do.

I am not ashmaned of this. I think it's a strength and so do the people closest to me.

thatbags Fri 05-Feb-16 08:19:58

The 'someone' ginny42 referred to is me. I posted what I thought and still think. I think it is self-centred of a grandmother to think mostly of her feelings after the birth of a grandchild than of the feelings and possible emotional needs of the new mother, and the post I responded to with 'harshness' struck me as exactly that.

It is quite possible that my impression of what the post was about was wrong. I accepted that and apologised for my quick fire response. The apology was accepted and then all the hoo-ha over my post was raked up again in this thread, impersonally (as it should be) until ginny42's post.

Everyone who knows me (and that's quite a few gransnetters by now) knows I'm a hard-hearted bastard. Aye right ?

pollyparrot Fri 05-Feb-16 08:19:12

Is this the grumpy old women's thread? Or the I've come her for an argument thread?

kittylester Fri 05-Feb-16 08:15:28

But why join a forum if you don't like the way it is? confused And please don't address me as dear - that is patronising.

Imperfect27 Fri 05-Feb-16 08:13:21

Thanks pollyparrot - I was just busy being happily distracted by thoughts of a fireman delivering me my favourite chocs. Yes, let's have a good day.

pollyparrot Fri 05-Feb-16 08:10:40

How jolly to wake up and read this lot, not. Anyway, good morning gransnetters. You're all lovely, and we're very lucky to have such a great forum. Since joining I've read some hilarious threads, including stuff about intimate bits and bobs, classic. I've also read some really moving threads, where the love and support is fantastic.

It's actually a great forum and that's down to you members. I love you all. That's my attempt to lighten the mood on here.

Dear janeainsworth and kittylester , this has nothing to do with 'lecturing' - I cannot see anything contentious about the suggestion that people treat each other respectfully. But again - it has got personal ...

Lillie Fri 05-Feb-16 08:04:18

Headmistress me please!
SHOUT AND CLOUT works best, and that's with the parents!

grannylyn65 Fri 05-Feb-16 08:00:31

Sorry but even recalcitrant teenagers don't usually turn on each other.

kittylester Fri 05-Feb-16 07:56:02

Quite jane!

janeainsworth Fri 05-Feb-16 07:50:20

imperfect27 I seem to remember in a previous posting that you said you were a teacher.
If that's correct, and I do apologise if it's not, please could you try to remember that you're not in the classroom now, and this forum doesn't consist of a group of recalcitrant teenagers who have to sit and listen to you lecturing them.
There are quite a number of teachers/former teachers on GN but none of them have taken it upon themselves to re-write the forum rules in the way that you appear to be doing.
Thank you.

Good morning - surprised to see how this thread has kept running! I don't think any sense of flounce was intended by Ginny42. I think her post was measured and just explaining why she has personally found GN disappointing. When people post in this way, I think they just hope that someone will note what the problems have been - that is all.

Yes, we are all different and carry different sensitivities - personally I see being of a sensitive nature as a potential strength, not a weakness.

To return to the original point of posting - this was simply a plea for people to be more considerate as they post. If you read over this thread carefully it is evident that this suggestion was met with a fair degree of provocative flippancy which could easily be interpreted as deliberately rude and unkind and with no apology.

The more I read around different threads and see people responding in different contexts, the easier it gets to understand when someone is just being flippant or provocative in a friendly manner, but it really can be very easily misread and when others then readily defend a flippant comment, for a new poster that can be daunting.

I hope this thread has made people ponder a little. As I said at the beginning, it was not about pointing the finger or complaining - simply trying to move things forward in a constructive way.

Here's to a good day on GN.

WilmaKnickersfit Fri 05-Feb-16 00:51:40

Just wanted to say that Ginny42's last post is an example of flouncing. It might not seem like a flounce, but in forum jargon it is a flounce because she could have just left quietly, but chose to announce she was leaving because she wasn't happy about something on a forum. That's flouncing. wink

Sorry, so did I ginny (I do like that user name in all its variations, sloeginny being my favourite (sorry, ginnygrin) not that I drink it except on rare occasions.

But I suppose it's like joining an organisation, eg WI, TWG, NWR, Probus etc - all varying and a person may join then leave because it's not their kind of group or they find the people there not the kind of person they get on with - or they may stick with it and find people are quite different to first impressions when they get to know them.

Elegran Thu 04-Feb-16 22:54:12

Sorry, I did call her ginny, instead of Ginny42 though I knew that she was not you, ginny. It gets tricky with so many similar usernames.

ginny Thu 04-Feb-16 22:39:23

Please note it is Ginny42 who is leaving not me. Although I don't suppose any one would notice anyway I'd just slip quietly away .

Penstemmon Thu 04-Feb-16 22:29:39

I appreciate that not everyone has easy access to a good friend but the principle is the same on line life is not RL.

obieone Thu 04-Feb-16 22:25:01

I dont think Ginny should be dismissed lightly.

On the other hand, the world is made up of all sorts of people, and the site is what it is.
I cant see it being any different in say the next 5 years, so it becomes up to people whether they want to be in that same space as others who they may not get along with very well or not.

It is like relations really. Rough with the smooth.

wot Thu 04-Feb-16 22:18:25

My last post was to pent.

wot Thu 04-Feb-16 22:17:30

Well, lucky you if you have a good source of friends and relatives. Some people don't have that resource.

Elegran Thu 04-Feb-16 22:09:44

wot It hasn't ended in quarrels and stuff! One person has decided to leave, but I think her mind was made up before this thread started. The rest understand each other a lot better than they did earlier. That can't be bad!

Penstemmon Thu 04-Feb-16 21:55:06

Oh dear! Online forum communications are not the same as RL! Usually in RL when seeking advice or opinion you do not ask a bunch of people you do not know! You ask friends , family or colleagues. If they are brusque or give a response that disagrees with your hoped for answer you of course get upset because you care about those people.

On a forum you are asking people you do not know, who you do not care about (in the way you do in RL)and so to get upset or offended by their opinions seems odd to me!

I enjoy a good thread and debate and whilst I can get heated about an idea or an opinion that I dislike/oppose and will argue my point of view strongly it is not about an individual I don't know just the ideas /thoughts they express.

wot Thu 04-Feb-16 21:51:33

I'm hAppy now,

wot Thu 04-Feb-16 21:50:32

Okay! Thanks!

Gransnet will be here in the morning. [pats wot on the head. and hands her a nice cup of cocoa]
